Depends on the room and the lighting in a room. Light will reflect off of glossy or semi-glossy paint and that's good for dark rooms. Flat paints are good for walls with imperfections but flat paint is not durable so don't use it in kitchens/baths where satin would be the choice there. Satin is also good for bedrooms and office rooms. Eggshell in the living room b/c its more durable than flat but not as shiny as satin.

Satin for me. When I spring clean and wipe my walls and base boards it cleans very well. Years ago I lived in am apartment and the paint was flat. You could barely bump it and it left marks. And it could be wiped down you had to touch the spots up with paint.

@Sunshine Kate Eggshell for majority of walls with semi-gloss or gloss for trims and doors. In bathrooms we use semi-gloss for walls and gloss for all trim and doors. High activity areas such as hallways, entrance way and stairwells are done in satin (easier to scrub/keep clean).

The sheen of a paint relates to the hardness/durability of the paint. The higher the gloss level the more scrubbable/durable the paint will be. The downside is the higher the gloss the more any defects in the surface being painted will show. Nick, dings, and issues that would be largely unnoticeable with a flat or eggshell paint will stand out with a high-gloss paint. In general, you want to use a glossier (more durable/scrubbable) paint anywhere you need to wash regularly like cabinets, doors, door trim, etc., and the less glossy paints where you're trying to hide any defects. And nearly every wall has some level of defects. You may not notice them now, but use a glossy paint and you will.
