Zero Gravity Recliner

Does anyone have a zero gravity recliner? Not an outdoor lounger but an actual zero gravity recliner for your home. I know this is a long shot, because a lot of people probably won't even know what these are. But if you have one, what brand do you have, where did you get it, and how have you liked it?

I've seen such chairs advertised from time to time. However, they're always in nice leather and prohibitedly expensive, like $2 to $3 thousand. I don't have that much to spend on a chair, although I'd love to have one. I don't know why someone can't make an attractive, affordable, inside zero gravity chair.

I've been looking for one for some time. Yes, they can be very expensive. I need one that is not too large because it has to come in thru a narrow doorway. The one I'm interested in now is from Hydeline dot com. It's the Ashby model, $1499. I haven't ordered yet -- still considering.

@Kachina624 I agree 100%! I think one would help my back, but I don't want vegan leather, because it will peel. And the leather one I've been looking at is on sale right now…Ha, ha…For $3900!

Thank you for posting! I'm going to go look at that one right now! I wish there was a store in my area that had at least one brand I could go look at and try out, but there's not. ETA: I like the look of that one a lot!

I have 2 Ekornes Stressless chairs that are 45 years old. Although I did not take proper care of the leather and there are now cracks, I won't sit on anything else LOVE!

A few years ago, a few local furniture stores carried them, but no more...

A co worker bought one In the $2,600. Range...although he hated the price, he loved the chair. 45 years ago I paid $300.00 each!

A few months ago I thought I might buy another, but could not find a store that carried them. There are now more sizes and support types online..how would I know which one was best for me? its too costly to just guess...

I also looked at the other brand, but again I would need to find a store...

So I'm interested in other responses 🙂

We also bought two of those chairs decades ago. We got them at two different times. The first one was when we were living in NJ and we purchased the chair from a Store called "Dane Decor" at the time.

After years of use we bought a new one about twenty five years ago and it's still in the family room.

The first one DS took when he went off to college and left it behind for a roommate to take. By this time it was well worn. DS told us that this roommate refinished it himself and did an amazing job! He even had photos of the finished product...very impressive!

Anyway I believe that we spent around 2 k for each chair.

There are some around. Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a Mcombo zero gravity recliner for $900+. The outdoor ones are available everywhere for $40 and up. There are some that appear to be hybrid indoor/outdoor with fabric-covered padding on an outdoor type of frame starting at around $100. Macy's has a Carran zero gravity fabric-covered recliner for $700+. Wayfair has some listed also.

Many years ago I bought one from Best/Basco/Service Merchandise (one of those three catalog stores) that was faux leather and was quite nice. It even had heat and massage built in.

I'm always surprised those recliners aren't more popular. They do take up a bit of room, but they're so comfortable. If you have the room for one, they're hard to beat.

@gardenman I have been using an outdoor one in my office. lol Gave my very comfy recliner to my husband after I had a low back injury. But I realize I really need something more supportive so am looking. I just can't imagine buying a chair without trying it first. I've read the reviews on the many I've found online, and they are all over the place, which I guess is to be expected. And I've read complaints that after 30 days, if it needs to be returned, there are massive shipping/restocking fees.

I don't understand why they're not more popular either. They are great for people with back issues.

My plan is to go to our local furniture stores to see if they have anything even similar to a true zero gravity recliner. Online, I see some that might be, but I can't tell if they're in the store even just to try.

As an aside, I loved Service Merchandise! Have many pieces of jewelry from them that have appraised very well just recently. Bought many home items there, too.

Yeah, those old catalog stores like Service Merchandise were ahead of their time. With retail theft as bad as it is now, having all of the merchandise in an adjoining warehouse and delivered to the customer after they've paid makes a lot of sense. With smart phones, customers could simply scan the tag of anything they wanted, place their order, pay through the phone, and then unlock a locker holding their items using their phone.

I expect to see someone try to revive that old format and modernize it to combat retail theft. It was a very clever way to shop, just a bit ahead of its time.

@gardenman I agree 100%. And I'd love to shop like that personally. I looked at the Macy's website and there are none for me to try out at our local Macy's. There are several I can try in St. Louis, which is over three hours away. Boo.

After spending Wednesday looking at recliners at different stores and even sitting on one at La-Z-Boy for over an hour reading a book to see if my lower back/butt would hurt (Yes! I did that with the salesman's permission! lol), I decided to cease and desist for a bit and think things over. I need a firm seat and being able to lie in a fully reclined position or even zero gravity is something I want. Well, the only chair I found that would fit that criteria was a lift chair at La-Z-Boy, which looked just like you would expect. And I didn't need the lift chair portion so hated paying for that. By the time I changed the material on it to a different cloth option (leather was going to be even more expensive), and added tax and delivery to the cost, it was going to be around $2500! Much more than I wanted to spend, but gosh...I haven't been able to use a traditional recliner in over a year because of a low back injury. And what if I got it home, and it caused pain? Too bad, so sad for my bank account and for me.

So my husband and I were at Costco Thursday, and they had a recliner that touted zero gravity. It wasn't necessarily my choice in looks or color, but comfort overruled those things. It wasn't hooked up, so I couldn't try it out, but it did seem to have a firm cushion and appeared comfortable.

Friday, we were on our way to my MIL's and needed to stop at Costco to pick up some flowers for her. We looked at the chair again, and this time, it was hooked up and marked down $100 through August 5! The price to start with was already a steal, so the new price was unreal...$479! We tried it out and were impressed. We decided to think on it some more, because for the last 24 years, I've only ever bought quality name-brand furniture, and with warehouse furniture or cheaper furniture, you likely get what you pay for. I was skeered to buy Costco furniture. lol

Saturday, we decided to go look one more time as soon as the store opened so that we could try it with less people milling around. My husband headed over to the chair, and I went to the returns department to ask about furniture returns. Guess what? Costco allows furniture returns indefinitely. The motor breaks in 3 years; return it. The stitching comes out in 5 years; return it. No need for the original box or anything. I about fell over. What did we have to lose except the hassle of loading it up and taking it back?

So we purchased two, because my husband wanted one by then. It is leather except for the sides and back. It has zero gravity and a power headrest. (I am now in love with power headrests...lol). The cons are that it does not have a remote or memory position buttons--only side controls. Also...the stores only carry cream leather, which for me isn't a big deal, but my husband? Oy. Online only, they have gray, and I wanted my husband to spend the extra $120 to get the gray for practicality, but he didn't want to do so, so cream it was for him, too. If the chairs work out, furniture covers will be in our future. lol For right now, we are using sheets over them.

So far, I have been able to sit and recline in it with no issues whatsoever. Both of us fell asleep in them yesterday, and they were very easy to put together. The best thing of all is the return policy, and these powered leather chairs were only $479!!!!

Here is a screen shot of the chair in case any of you are interested. Again...in real life, this probably wouldn't be the color or style I would choose, but being able to use a recliner again at this price was a no-brainer. It is more expensive on line as you can see. They had the gray in the same brand on a sofa, and it is a pretty gray--kind of a brown gray. If they'd had those in the stores, we would have gotten the gray because of practicality, but this cream is sure pretty.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know what I ended up doing in case you're interested in purchasing one. And the price online includes shipping. Setup is only $25 more. A membership to Costco is $60 if you don't have one.

@Kachina624 not completely flat but zero gravity where your feet are above your head (if you want them to be). In this pic, the headrest is in a raised position, but you can see if the headrest was down, you still wouldn't be completely flat.

@Ainhisg Thank you so much for your review, comments, picture and Costco info! This has been very helpful. I've been looking/researching also, mainly La-Z-boy. I'm going tomorrow to see this one at my Costco. I think it looks better than La-Z-Boy! I hope you continue to enjoy yours.

My last La-Z-Boy recliner was pretty bad in terms of quality and broke within about eighteen months. I replaced it with a much cheaper, all-steel Chinese-made recliner that's about three years old now, and still going strong. It's not a zero-gravity recliner, but it's pretty nice.

@Labby mom you are certainly welcome. I'm a retired teacher and can get very wordy if I'm excited about something or dislike something. lol

I sat in it (reclined at multiple positions) for probably 2-3 hours last night with no issues. This morning, I have been in it for an hour at a fully upright position on my laptop with no back or butt pain. It has been such a relief to find a chair with a firm cushion that is zero gravity at this price! And like I have waxed on and on about, because I can't hardly believe it ...lol...if I change my mind in two weeks or something breaks on it in a year or two, back it can go to the warehouse for a full refund!

My husband is 6'1" and 230 pounds (mostly muscle). He loves his, too, and finds that it helps his back. The cushion probably doesn't feel as firm to him as it does to me, because he weighs so much more than I do, so a person's mileage may vary. I'm 5'6", and my feet sit perfectly flat on the floor in an upright position. Reclined, my feet hang over the edge, but I don't find it uncomfortable, and my husband said he doesn't either.

Here is a picture of mine in my "reading" room. It is just my husband and me, and we have a house on the smaller side. He loves to watch TV particularly sports and westerns, which is not my thing, so I have one bedroom set up with a TV, desk, and this corner where I read to give you a visual of its size.

ETA: If you think you might want the gray, look for the sectional in gray leather by the same brand. I don't know for sure (but strongly suspect) that it would be the color of the gray chair that you have to order online.
