ALTERNATIVE COUCH PROTECTOR-- CANVAS DROP CLOTH

For anyone who, for whatever reason-- style, price, etc., is not enamored of the cloth sofa protectors out there, designer Mary Ann Pickett at classiccasualhome.com suggests a natural fiber alternative-- a painter's cotton canvas drop cloth.

She was discussing the merits of the "Jake" sofa from Pottery Barn, and said her daughter needed something to protect her oatmeal linen one from her toddler and dog.

She has a high performance fabric on the couch, where you just wipe up spills, but still wanted another layer of protection:

I think it looks nice on her couch, and the neutral color goes great with the oatmeal linen. I'm also thinking it could be dyed to suit a different color couch, given that it's a natural fiber? Since it's only $17.99 at Amazon, it might be worth it.

It can be whisked off in a second when company comes. She doesn't have it going over the arms, probably preferring a more tailored look. But the drop cloth company shows it also used in a more "shabby-chi-chi" way, that gives more coverage on the couch:

Amazon offers if from the Salt Earth company, pack of one reusable paint drop cloth, 100% recycled cotton.

There are several sizes-- Mary Ann mentioned the 6 by 9 foot one, but others are available.

I use throws on my couch, as a protective layer, but it's nice to know all the options.

@Oznell - I am definitely going to look this up on Amazon. We bought a very light taupe sofa last year and stupidly I did not have them pre-treat it so stains just bead up. I have been kicking myself for that choice! I have one of the sofa covers that does cover the arms also but I am constantly adjusting and tucking it in. Drives me crazy and doesn't look neat. For the price this drop cloth is worth the try and the color would go well in the room.

Thanks for sharing this option, because I was going to try a throw next to see how that works.

Maybe you can pre-treat yourself with a spray after vacuuming it?

Not sure if it would be an aerosol can, the ones for shoes are which work really well.

It says it can be used for a tarpoline so it might be as waterproof as scotchguard. I don't thnk any inside furniture is made to be totally waterproof, not even leather. There are eventually soft parts to any inside furnishings where, if they were in a flood of water, they would be ruined. A tarp is about as good as you can get for indoor waterproofing, I would think. Perhaps a shower curtain, for kids, would be better if it has "pictures" on it.

The biggest problem would be, as soon as someone sat on it, it would look like an unmade bed. Only practical for sofas that aren't actually used. You'd constantly be tucking and smoothing one that is.

I have used a flat bedsheet as a couch cover. Yes it gets sloppy with use but it helps keep the couch clean if people are eating, putting their feet up, etc.

While canvas can be water resistant, it would need a PVC coating or other coating to make it waterproof.

IMO using canvas might work within certain casual or coastal/beach styles, I don't think it would blend well with many other styles. I also agree with @Kachina624 about the tucking & straightening if the cover wasn't cut to the right size, fitted, etc.

I have several from CCS Chicago Canvas and they are a savior for me.

Two cats. They think the couch is their's.

So to protect it from fur I use 2 drop clothes (it's has an attached chaise) and then I put down pestemals. No need for waterproof material. But I have lots of pestemals (long turkish towels), too. Constantly switch them out. Because I won't sit where a cat sat!

In less than 3 months we're breaking ground for a new addition. It's where my couch will be. Uncovered!!! And no cats allowed!

I will never use covers for my furniture. Have leather in the family room. The living room is not used that much. We had three sons and a dog. I grew up with them and never liked them. My parents had a beautiful antique couch that was ruined by a cat when it was in a cellar. I would have had it reapolsted but it was not to be.

That's nice of you, @sligo , thanks. Agree, the low price makes experimentation feasible. I love getting new perspectives on dealing with common issues, like keeping couches as clean as possible, while still living your life ( with cats).

I've had lots of slipcovers over time, and I think they are fine in some applications. I don't care for the utilitarian odd-shaped protectors you see out there. Now I use folded throws, which are easy.

But there's something about a natural drop cloth that appeals to me-- looks "arty". I wouldn't care if it matched sofa or not-- it's neutral, so bring on the two tone look, very English. By the way, she said that they get softer and softer with washing, a real plus.

These canvas throws look a bit scratchy to me. Comfort is everything to me on a sofa.

We have treated fabric to resist stains on our sofas, but I still cover them with soft throws because we allow our dog on them. My husband sometimes spills a drink or snack too. It eases my mind to have the throws covering the sofas.

I have a few different solid and printed throws that I switch out and launder regularly. Some are for fall and winter & others I use in spring & summer. They move around a bit as we sit and lounge, but that doesn't bother me.

@Oznell THANKS! I just ordered three to have on hand for emergencies, projects, and to put on the dining room table if we need that to put somethings on for some reason or the other besided eating (like cleaning out the big white cabinets that hold dishes!).

Those are great ideas, @Sooner , for various uses. Plain, natural fiber cotton is versatile.
