@haddon9 Getting hot is one of the reasons I'm thinking about skipping this mattress because I don't think it's going to be very cooling. I've really liked my current memory foam but it's very old, probably from when they first became popular, and it really is hot not matter what I try. I'm a hot sleeper PLUS I really need a comforter on me when I sleep so I'm pretty much a nightmare sleeper. Dead of winter I sleep with my bedroom window open.

I'm seriously considering ordering the Tempurpedic big deal mattress while it's still available but I'm wondering if anyone has done a return on one of these bed in a box mattresses before? How do they handle it?

I've put off buying even though I really need one because I fear getting into a cycle where I don't like what I purchased but I need to might the bullet and this one looks like it might be a good fit for me. Just don't want to make a very pricey purchase and then have drama if I hate it.

I once purchased a mattress that I had to return. I bought it in one of those mattress stores that happen to be in my area. I did not even have to take it off the bed. They came the next day and removed it. I would hesitate to buy a mattress any other way.

My problem with buying it in a store is that I'll probably end up in the same predicament and that's why I keep putting it off. Just shopping for pillows turned into a nightmare. Thought I found the ones and then a week later they didn't work. I figure a little time in a store isn't really going to tell me much beyond it feels good for a few minutes.

I know someone that had the greatest mattress but I think that bad boy is over 2 thousand dollars and that just isn't happening.

I have to get something fixed on my car so maybe I should just deal with whatever that shocking price will be instead.

Don't buy the mattress if you think you may need to return it. I'm the kind of shopper who rarely returns anything, so I took a chance on one of those compressed mattresses. Our BeautyRest was eight years old, and it had started to sag. The one I brought online could be flipped - it had a softer and firmer side so I figured that increased the odds of us liking it. We are both happy with the new mattress (softer side was what we liked the best).

I have to lie down on a mattress before I buy it. A lot of furniture stores sell tempur-pedic so you might want to try them before buying.

Shop around. I have found that furniture, mattresses, and a whole host of products sold on Q are less expensive elsewhere.

Most of the bed-in-a-box mattress companies and sellers have "return partners" who will pick up an unwanted mattress if you're unhappy with it. They all have conditions attached though. The mattress needs to be unstained, have the "don't remove under penalty of law" tag still on it, and show no wear. A few charge a fee to return a mattress. Most of the returned mattresses get donated to shelters (homeless, abused women, etc.) of various types for reuse. Those charities are often the "return partner" so don't be shocked if the van/truck that shows up to collect an unwanted mattress is from a charity and those picking it up are either shelter employees or shelter occupants.

By donating the used mattresses in good condition the mattress maker/retailer gets to write off the cost. The charity receiving the mattress provides the labor and transportation, so no extra cost there to the seller/maker. And the shelter gets an essentially free mattress. And no company will let you return multiple mattresses. It's typically just one or two you're allowed to return before they say "No more!"

My current mattress is a bed-in-a-box mattress and it's been great. I'm not mattress-picky and can sleep on just about anything, so there wasn't a huge risk for me in buying one. Mine was said to be a medium firm, but is really more of a plush, but that's fine with me. I've been using it for almost a year and it's still like new.

There's relatively little risk in buying a bed-in-a-box. If you're a picky mattress shopper you're still probably better off going to a furniture/mattress specialty retailer, but if you're less picky a bed-in-a-box is often your best option.

I'm sort of surprised they don't address how a return would work. Buying online or in a store, I still want to know about a return policy. A 900 dollar purchase isn't something I want to get stuck with if I really hate it plus I'm in an apartment so having a mattress hanging around if returning it is tough is annoying.

See, this is why I just stick with the mattress I have and know. I wish they still made it so I could just get a new one. Also mattress shopping is extra annoying because stores have a lot of the same mattresses but with different names so it's hard to price shop.

@gardenman t brand of mattress did you get?

@pigletsmom

Mine is a Rimensy 10" hybrid mattress from Amazon. (Gel memory foam and innerspring combo.) My total cost was $220 and change. I was going slowly insane reading reviews of mattresses and finally just opted for that one and it's been great.

Many mattress reviewers seem to be a bit insane. "Way too hard! It's like sleeping on a rock!" "Way too soft! It won't even hold me up!" And those reviews would be for the same mattress. And they're that way across the board from the no-name cheaper ones to the highest of high-end mattresses. Mine came with a 4.3 rating overall, so I largely ignored the "way too hard" and "way too soft" reviews and assumed they were idiots or had unique needs. It worked out. It came with a one-year warranty but at that price it wasn't a huge gamble. It's been fine. I have no complaints about it.

Foam and springs are foam and springs no matter who makes them. Foam density can vary and spring strength can vary, but by and large, you're getting the same, or very similar materials no matter which brand of mattress you buy. You can easily spend ten times what I paid and get a mattress that looks feels, and works the same.

You can guesstimate the foam density by the weight of the mattress. Denser foam weighs more. If one 10" queen-size mattress weighs forty pounds and another one weighs eighty pounds there's a reasonable expectation that the eighty-pound one is using a denser foam or heavier springs and might be the sturdier mattress.

I like a softer mattress so I was looking at the medium-firm or plush mattresses more than the firm ones. If a mattress was too firm I could add bed topper to it. This bed turned out to be nearly ideal for me. The gel memory foam stays cooler. The springs are holding up fine. The cover was a very good quality and still looks new. I have no complaints.

It was a bed in a box. It was delivered & dropped off at my front door. The box was heavy & broken & laying on the ground.Bugs were crawling in it. I called QVC & they refunded my money but would not pick it up. They said it was my problem to dispose of of it. I told them that it I couldn't just drag it to the curb. I live in a private development with private garbage pick up. It's against HOA rules do do that. They basically said it was my problem. It ended up costing me $ to have it removed.

After that fiasco I ordered a mattress with white glove set up from HSN. Weeks passed & I never got the mattress. The shipper kept making appointments & not showing up.After several conversations & give backs from HSN Corporate customer service, I finally told them to cancel the order.

Several months ago I went in to a local furniture store & bought a mattress. It came with a 90 day try out. I got free delivery the next day. After about a month I decided I wanted the pillow top version. I went to the store & they exchanged the mattress for free in 2 days with no up charge due. Very easy, no stress or hassles.

From my experience I would recommend you buy a mattress locally.

I bought my mattress from Helix about 8 years ago now and still LOVE it-----my DD did too, but she wasn't happy with it so she contacted the company and they arranged to have someone local come take it away.

I finally just ignored the most extreme ones and went from there.
