SPLIT LEVEL LIVING ROOM REFRESH

Maria Killam's childhood friend, Nancy, was lucky enough to have Maria help her out a bit when she moved into a new house.

Nancy and her family were on a tight budget, after buying the house. She already had a gray sectional, which wouldn't change, but definitely needed to change the wall color-- a dark purplish shade - of the new house, and needed a rug, lamps, and other accessories.

I can see why they wanted a new wall color. Maybe it would be OK in a study, but for me, at least, it's too muddy and too dark for a room your spend so much time in:

After assessing Nancy's needs and preferences, Maria drew up two basic mood boards. They would start with an area rug-- and build the colors around that.

Option 1:

The cognac and cream and little bits of navy in the rug, would be the basis of the colors in the room. They would choose from an assortment of coordinating lamps--

This option 1 would have been my choice, even though I really like both options. Love cognac and cream and navy! "Indian White" is a beautiful complex cream wall color. And cognac does such a good job of waking up, and warming up, cooler neutrals like gray...

Option 2:

Nancy chose this one, due to her love for turquoise with navy and gray (another sophisticated combo), and it is fresh and pretty--

Again, they started with the rug, and chose accessories to coordinate with its colors.

You can never go wrong with classic gourd lamps--

Would you have taken option 1, or option 2?

I think the room turned out beautifully, so much more cheerful than what they started with--

Split level entries can be challenging to decorate. I like the way that now, when you look over to the entrance, there's a handsome modern pendant light, and an interesting art wall that punches up the living room's colors....

The multi-levels, the pendant, art, and the color scheme, are giving sort of a groovy retro "60's ski chalet" feeling to me!

@luvzchiz , fortunately Nancy has Charlie, a little Papillon, to complete the picture...

I like the lighter walls better.

Btw, I still can't figure out why home 'library rooms' are almost always very dark paneled walls.

Very dark rooms with, say, only two or so small, dim lamps.

'Oh, well'........

True, @ROMARY , there is that whole tradition of fairly dark libraries and studies. It's got to be harder to read in there, I've often thought, as well! But I think maybe the idea is that the deeper color "envelops" you, bringing a feeling of coziness....

I just bought a pajama pant and camisole top set that's exactly like Option 2. Definitely like the color combination.

When I was posting this topic, I had totally forgotten that I had recently 'saved' a cognac-and-cream room that struck my fancy. It's funny, because cognac, amber and copper are outside of my usual cooler favorites of blues and greens. But they have much appeal.

I like the way the art interacts compatibly with the pillows, lamps and flowers--

They did very well on the redo, however, tertiary colors are hard to live with.

I would suggest in place of blue-green (turquoise) deep green be used. Green is restful and free in nature; it's easier to live around.

Tertiary colors have a double name; blue-green, red-orange.

Big difference, I love it, so light and bright now.....

I think I could've gone either way, between options 1 and 2.

The final product is pretty overall. I particularly like the lighter paint, curtains and lovely rug.

However, I actually like the blue furniture in the "before" picture much more than the gray in the final product. I do like the splashes of turquoise and the artwork is lovely...

Changing a paint color, switching out lamps, & adding a rug, etc. to refresh are things people often do themselves and might be much ado about nothing to them.

Yes, it's an easy improvement.

I like option 2 with the turquoise and Charlie makes it complete!

I really like the sofa. We need to buy a new one and that one looks quite comfy.

Meh... Either way, not much one can do given that ugly grey sectional has to be in the mix... Be so much nicer to be able to start from scratch...

I like both options actually, but for me personally I would have picked #1-colors suit me more. But option # 2 is very pretty.
