VIGNETTES, FOR FUN!

Most of us decorating fiends love to see what other people do in their houses. I don't have that many horizontal surfaces in my house, and I do keep a ( loose, ha) restriction on what decor I can have, sadly. I purge, and try to "curate" what's left.

So it's totally recreational for me to see other people's arrangements. Some of the following are from the Edit Page, some from Maria Killam, and other design places online....

A). These first two images were "extras" I had found to tuck in. I wonder who those guys are in this person's vignette? They have a Sixties vibe for sure, Maxwell Smart or Mad Men...

B). The whimsy of the chandelier birds, mixed with the very contemporary vases, makes this interesting to me. Using two of the same kind of vase, perhaps different sizes, always looks cool, somehow...

Here we go:

Below, this is such a celebration of natural elements, plus birds and picturesque containers. And how can anything with sweet p ussy willows and birdies possibly miss?

Vignettes can create such a mood. What a thoughtful guest room idea-- to have beautifully displayed cookies, and sleek tea service for one!

A display can be as simple as a refined basket on a runner, filled with twigs or bits of driftwood. Whoever created it, knew just when to stop- iIt suits the room perfectly.

Below, I kind of instinctively don't care for arrangements here, ha. But, what an attractively displayed array of practicalities, and the black and white photo and the posy are witty touches. Might get knocked over though, if the homeowner has kids...

Among my favorite vignettes, are ones that use color in a way that reinforces, or "punches up" a scheme. Even one of the books here helps out with color.

Another example of that, with a symphony of blues playing nicely together, from sky blue to French blue, to periwinkle to the luscious teal of the decanters. I'm going to guess that the homeowner might have a fab glass collection! And I love that all that is spiked with the surprise of the charteuse lamp!

I think this is from Maria Killam's sister's house. The combination of colors is refreshing...

I believe these colors are repeated elsewhere in the house, too-- it's like a fun preview of coming attractions--

And then she showed what it's like with exotic orange flowers, which mimic the painting's flowers...

As for more subtle colors, it's neat the way this dining room's tablescape with its "pods" (?) , sort of repeats what's going on in the print above the buffet. Love those stately vases too, monochromatic with the wall color....

This simple living room originally had not much color or art. It had taupes, and a tiny bit of blue. But I like the way the addition of a painting with blues, pinks and blushes inspired more color in the makeover. That taupe sofa now has some blue pillows, and the vase, bouquet and magnifying glass repeat the browns and peachy blushes in the room.

OK, granted, this is from a posh store, not a home, but I still can't resist the way they interspersed the green Foo dogs with the little green vases, and the neutral stone sculptures and photograph.

What could be more simple than a stack of books, a vase with hydrangea, a gorgeous glass bowl candle, and handsome coasters? Surprisingly elegant.

Delightfully formal, with symmetrical lamps and crystal chandelier, but the leaning vintage mirror lends personality and "relaxes" it all--

But, I also like the casual, impromptu look of a chair-as-table, basket stowed underneath... just right for a small entrance area.

Is it a vignette when you balance little birds on your favorite old books? Yup, I'd say so.

The irregularity of the long sweep of "live edge" coffee table, makes an apt runway for exotic pottery and candles in this bohemian, global room...

Red and turqoise is a sophisticated room combination, which the vignette showcases, but tempers with the neutral lamps and finials.

18)

The dresser in J. Clair's New York bedroom shows a romantic delicacy, with almost rhythmic color injection.

This tablescape, in a store, I think, makes me think of urban glam, maybe Paris--

A few questions for other vignette lovers and recreational design spectators:

Can you relate to any of the elements in the photos?

If you are decorating a console, mantel, coffee table, etc., do you like to pull in the existing colors of a room? Or not?

If you like, describe your favorite arrangement in your house.... Be as detailed as you'd like.

Wow so many visual delights!

I love the idea of the flowers matching the colors in a painting. Also love the birds on the books and the birds and pretty hyacinths and willows.

I like all the arrangements in my place.

An old bookcase with small pretty albums and pictures of my family in different frames plus tiny treasures from my favorite places-a green stone, pewter lighthouse, pewter intricate candlesticks, "fairy dust" in tiny cases, a donkey, some quartz, a tiny snow mother with her snowbaby and more.

This all sounds incredibly crowded but it doesn't look that way because each little thing is very small. You would have to be right on top of it all to see.

Then another marble bar area has pictures of all my grandchildren with their parents when young interspersed with Valeries snow birds saying joy, hope, love, etc. And a wooden dolphin.

And more but another favorite is a collage of snow pictures I took in a whitewashed frame with cutout windows and my favorite dolphin ceramic I got when I was 17. More pictures of my children and a painting of my 3 granddogs that is so lifelike that my children gave to me.

Is that first picture a picture in your home?

I enjoyed looking at these lovely vignettes. The favorite in my home is family pictures. I do love vignettes with fresh flowers. candles or lamps. The second one with tea and cookies by the bed is lovely too.

Oh, no, @on the bay , that picture isn't mine-- I don't have the ability to post my own photos on here. But I can see why you thought that, since those first 2 pics weren't numbered like the others... they were just sort of "intros", ha. I will edit and add a comment to make clear.

Thanks for your detailed description-- I feel like I can see your interesting collections. Wow, I never realized you were a dolphin aficionado, but it sounds like you are!

@Iwantcoffee , flowers, candles, pictures-- evocative ingredients for memorable vignettes. You all mentioning photos, reminds me how important they are-- should have shown more...

I love vignettes and there are some beautiful ones in these photos! I think the one with the birds balancing on the old books is just so lovely!!! I decorate with old books and put old family photos and other decor on them . I love the painting of the woman in red and also the floral paintings with the vignettes in front of them. The chandeliers with the birds, stunning as are must chandeliers. Vignettes are enjoyable to create and they can be simple or ornate. I have many around my home. As I stated, I love using old books, one or many and then putting a photo or figurine on them, or whatever decor strikes me. I love baskets with florals in them and putting a lantern or glass vase beside the basket. Probably old family/friend photos and florals, old books dominate my vignettes but I also blend in vases and figurines . I have quite a few children figurines which I display in my vignettes.As far as the background color, it doesn't matter, I mix and match!

These were all so enjoyable...thanks for the vignettes. I love the ones that include a vintage photo and I try to do the same ... it just makes a room a bit more personal for me. The vignette that brought a smile was #16 with the little white birdies perched on the vertical books! So sweet and a great idea!

They're all very nice but like the bright mixed colors in 7, 8 & 9 as well as the mixed subtle neutrals in 11.

Love those vignettes!

We have art niches all over our house built in 2000 which were popular then. Can be a challenge as to ignore them & leave empty or fill them.

This one is in my line of sight as it is directly below the TV. It's a non essential space but I've added things I like including the hammered copper pitcher on the left that sat on our brick fireplace hearth growing up.

@spiderw , I've always enjoyed your constantly renewed zest for decorating, and love of, and incorporation of, old books, with your other objects. Somehow, the synergy of books with decorative objects and flowers, is so soulful. Thanks for creating in word pictures all that you do in your decorating process.

@rockygems123 , I love your hammered copper piece! I love hammered metal, and especially the soft appearance of hammered copper. What a treasured memento, and to get to savor it and the memories every day is a blessing.

Love that people enjoyed those chatting little birds-- they took my fancy too, probably rendering their pungent reviews of the books they were perched on....

There are endlessly diverse arrangements out there, I can never boil them down to a few.

The kitchen is one room where I do subscribe to "less is more", and prefer clean stretches of counter, with only the bare necessities kept out.

These are rather nice though, for different reasons:

Fancy and fully stocked:

The beauty and utility of a few, but well-chosen items. Reminds me of a modern version of a European still life:

This living room vignette caught my eye for its use of color--

This one, for the moody atmosphere and hints of lilac in lampshade, painting and flowers--

You don't often see drinking glasses used in coffee table vignettes. I love the way these pretty, etched, spring-like ones encircle the unusual vase--

Vignettes is how I decorate my fireplace mantel---have no room/ place for decor---I do have stuff for the walls but don't change them out--- I decorate for each season as well as for the holidays---I have so many different objects that seem not to play well with the others, but all together they look great.
