Just had a new Sealy Posterpedic queen bed delivered today and realized I do not have a mattress cover for it. I had mattress cover on the old memory foam bed that was flipped to death. And, in a quick google search, it appears to be optional.

No kids or animals will be sleeping in the bed. Just me, myself and I.

Do you use a mattress cover? If so, do you have a recommendation for a good easy to get on and off cover for washing?

Thank you all who have an opinion. These forums have been great to bounce things off. Much appreciated.

Check the warranty on your new bed. Some bed warranties say you need to place a protective cover on it if you ever need to use that warranty in the future. Stains could void the warranty in other words.

All of my beds have a mattress pad on them. The bed I sleep on every night has two of them...one on top of the other.

The bottom one is waterproof and the top one is padded 100% cotton. I wash the top one about 4 times a year and the bottom one about once or twice a year.

My mattress is pretty old, but looks brand new. Old skin and body oils will go right through bed sheets. My mattress pads go on like fitted sheets.

I cover my pillows too.

I have a memory foam mattress and use a cover on it for protection and sanitary reasons.

Spills, dirt, bacteria, sweat, and other other body fluids can seep through sheets.

Plus it's easier to spot-clean than scrubbing the actual mattress.

I've always used a cover on my mattress and bed pillows.

I use the mattress covers that keep out dust mites because of my allergies. I used to buy the Claritin ones at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Since they closed their stores, I found an allergy one at Walmart. I use mattress protectors and wash them often to protect both the mattress and myself.

@nwbabs Yes. I have always covered all beds with mattress covers. In addition to all the reasons stated by everyone before I posted this, I have had flanel or microfiber sheets leave behind teeny little balls of fluffiness (to describe it nicely lol) ON the mattress cover! I was able to simply strip it off the mattress, throw it in the wash, and return it to the bed all nice, clean and fluffy balls gone. Sure I could have vacuumed the mattress, but that wouldn't solve all the other problems associated with not having a cover as stated by others.

As for my recommendation: fit is a must along with whatever you prefer sleeping on. We have a sleep number bed so we adjust that to our desired firmness, but I usually buy a pillowtop mattress cover for added coziness. Machine washable, even the king size, is a must.

Look around at the different types of covers and buy one you think you would like. Mine are always pull over like a fitted sheet. I suppose you could also get one that envelops the entire bed, but that would be near impossible for us with this king bed. Good luck!

I've always used a mattress cover. I just bought a new mattress in November and bought the Serta Total Protection Mattress Pad at JC Penny's. It's very nice and doesn't make noise like some waterproof ones do.

I've washed it many times and is still very nice.

Mattresses are so expensive. It's a lot cheaper to buy a new pad than a mattress if an accident should happen.

It's not in the store, but it ships free. It has just enough fill, but isn't heavy, thick, or poofy. It's easy to get on and off. I have a king size, and it fits in my top load washer. I've had mine for three years, and it's still holding up well. It reminds me of the kind of mattress pads I grew up with. I have a Sealy hybrid mattress, and I like that this pad doesn't change how my mattress feels.

You might not need one, but I'd suggest you get a mattress pad similar to the one in the previous post. Those that are lightweight and easy to wash are my favorites. It adds a bit of security in case something spills (or leaks).

I can't imagine not using a mattress pad, and no you don't need to wash them that much if it is just a single person maybe once every six months. Same for pillow protectors, I put new pillows in a pillow protector just like I put on a pad on the mattress and wash them all at the same time.

I would never not have a mattress cover for all the reasons previously mentioned.

I have a Casper mattress and purchased one of their covers online. I also have a Concierge cover in my spare bedroom I purchased on HSN. Both are nice quality.
