MODERN / VINTAGE L.A. LOFT RENTAL APARTMENT

A few might remember Kelley from the wonderful California store Blu Canoe. She's the one who had the little ranch in Ojai, California, lots of rustic touches--

Apparently, now she lives in Pasadena, in a rented loft. I've always liked the way she combines old and new, in a clean, but cozy way.

You'll see some of her same things in the new apartment, "plus". She said this 'plein air' painting below was one of her inspirations for the new space:

And a few pieces of her favored vintage Roseville pottery--

Color-wise, she especialy gravitated to a shimmering orange velvet called "Melon", to be combined with a faded blue batik--

It's a mix of old and new, sleek and rustic. Her husband's white leather Eames chair works great with the tailored white twill slipcovered couch. Too bad the sun is bleaching everything out in some of the photos--

She's got such an eye for mixing eras-- I really enjoy her combination of Victorian bamboo tables, with the Parson's- like coffee table, Roseville art pottery, baskets, modern clear glass lamps, weathered iron bunny!

More contrast-- the clean pedestal table with Roseville pot and ceramic match safe--

And this quote of hers below, kind of epitopmizes her eclectic design style-- the distressed sculptor's stool, antique mirror, and venerable pot--

If you notice, in some shots the sun is blazing through, and in others, it's more diffused. I think she had just moved in when these were taken. I imagine she will have some form of window treatment to control the light.

I love that glossy, metallic-finish TV console-- seems perfect for an urban loft.

Aww. She said her dog Millie has now rejected her dog bed for the new soft rug...

@Oznell Beautiful apartment! So bright and airy with the different textures and prints. The mixture of woods, glass and metal with contemporary and rustic...I love it! This shows just how large and open a smaller space can even appear. I especially like the painting and the Roseville pottery. I have a few pieces that I adore.

Love how she has intermixed everything. I am not a fan of matchy, matchy but I do enjoy relatives, even distant ones! For me,it is more pleasing to the eye, not "studied" but flows! Thanks, Oznell.

She has excellent taste

I like the white couch and white leather chair, they look so elegant. Her color scheme is tasteful and blend in seamlessly. The pop of orange pillows are perfect.

My favorite picture is the Jack Russell of course. A real beauty.

I have to say that, this time, I'm not a fan. Too much white for my liking, and I don't think her pieces blend together nicely at all. Just looks like a mish mash of pieces that don't belong together. Sometimes I don't know what's going through the minds of designers. I never would have guessed this was decorated by a professional.

Overall, it's a little too stark for me, but there sure are a couple of things I really like, such as that inviting LR...those baskets and flowers soften the look and are so pretty. Also the vintage Roseville pottery - reminds me of my mother and the pieces she had from the 40s and 50s. I like seeing the vintage mixed with the new and modern. They enhance each other, I think.

I can see what she's going for, and why people who like the mix of modern and vintage would like this but I'm not a fan of this particular mix. Then again, I'm not a fan of almost anything modern in any mix! It's nice to see how other people see things though.

@Citrine1 , I do agree that this kind of mix is not for everyone. It's even more eclectic than I usually am. But, for better or worse, I do see a method to her madness, and it does mesh, for me. What charms me, I suppose, is that despite the modernity, she always reigns that in with softness, as well....

I've finally concluded that even though I'm a traditionalist, there always has to be a contrast in the room-- sometimes a sharp contrast, which usually works out to be modern, deco, or midcentury modern. Something "hard", and unexpected, to keep things from being too sweet, or trite.

Otherwise, the room seems erring too much on the side of being "frilly", too ingratiating, to my eye...

As usual, am not explaining it well.... I enjoyed all the comments in the thread, both yea and nay, on this one!

I don't see too many pieces I like, and I'm not a fan of the overall look of the style mixes. I guess I'm not very eclectic. I like the matching end tables, baskets, and the clear vase with flowers. Her dogs are cute!

Came across another room she did, in her previous house incarnation. I can never get over its fresh beauty--

Those little retro iron dogs on the mantel, the indigenous blanket over the couch, the juxtaposition of the black and white photography with the painted cupboard, love. She has that wayward, inspired artist's eye...

While I wasn't a fan this time, it doesn't make me enjoy the pictures any less. I always love seeing the rooms that you post!

This home speaks to me. It is unfortunate that the sun shining through the windows did wash everything out. While it is eclectic, it is not jarringly so. I always err on the side of being to matchy-matchy.

Certain aspects can add to a room's charm. For instance those big orange-ish pillows. I have several pillows in my living room that same size in copper and they do make a statement.

Does this ever happen to anyone? I had a meeting today at the condo of our new Board of Directors. We have many different floor plans here and hers is just stunning. So of course I come home feeling a little defeated wanting to redo everything! 😥

While I always enjoy seeing how others decorate, their design and style, I am not a fan of mixing modern in with other designs. I guess it's because modern isn't my taste. However, as I said, it is interesting to see other tastes.

I've never been a fan of mixing any design style so the pictures here don't really do a whole lot for me. There are some individual pieces that I love including those glass lamps, that Earmes chair w/ the footstool, coffee table and that adorable bunny on the coffee table. As always, I do really appreciate your posting these home/room pictures!!

Looks like the orange pillows are making the rounds between the different designers.

That does not seem to be a good location for her glass pedestal table - it is right next to the walking path, and the clear glass top with the sharp corners has a potential to cause injuries.

Love her Roseville pottery. Like the weathered iron bunny rabbit. Her furniture looks comfortable.

It's good that her husband has the Eames chair he can call his own, probably the one piece that stays constant amid the frequent changes that bloggers and designers seem to make. Wonder how the spouses of these designer/blogger people feel when their home environment is changed frequently around them for the different seasons or reasons.

I agree with you. To me, this looks like a consignment shop, with so many disparate pieces jammed in. There are some elements I like, but overall, her decor doesn't appeal to me. It skews too modern for my taste. The space has great light, but it reads to me more as a garden apartment with large widows than a loft or former industrial type space. I find her former living space a bit more appealing, though overall, her aesthetic isn't one I'd select.

I love this room. And the eye loves it too. It has movement and rest. Beautiful!
