An interior decorator recommended having a vibrant statement rug in a room. Do you have one? We have a southwestern native american rug (no pic, sorry) but here is the rug the decorator showed:

@silver Goldie I have 2 "statement" chairs in my livingroom area, but they speak much quieter than that rug does.

If I lived in a bigger space and had no other prints in my room, I'd try a statement rug, just not one that shouts.

Wow that pattern would make me dizzy, LOL! But I do understand the need for a statement rug, especially in a more modestly decorated room. I have a large Persian carpet made in India we purchased 20 years ago in my living room. It is lovely and has a beige,dark teal and maroon colored pattern in it. The pattern resembles a diamond like look but not "busy".........kind of hard to explain. It goes really nicely with my beige colored walls, brown leather la z boys chairs and my maple tables. The quality is unsurpassed (it was pricey) as it still looks really good and it has been lived on!

That pic is a perfect example of designing based on where you want the focus to be. As in, if you want people to notice the floor instead of the windows or artwork, this is a good way to accomplish that.

I like it but I'd, personally, prefer a rug that is not so bold so I could have some smaller prints on the pillows or even the furniture.

That particular rug is too busy for me, however I do agree that the room needs a statement piece..I think a different rug would work-one that is not quite as busy!!! lol.

That rug reminds me of tree rings and knotty trees

Overall less expensive changing an area rug as compared to buying all new furniture

That rug take me back to the 60's. Not a great decade for home decorating, IMHO. It almost reads psychedelic.

The room really does need some color though. Just not this much, and not such a bold, crazy pattern. But I'm sure it would appeal to some.

@silver Goldie - There is nothing wrong with a statement rug, but you should definitely be certain that you love the pattern and all the colors in that statement rug before you commit to having one in a particular room.

The rug in the picture your decorator provided to you has a terrible color combination in my opinion. I cannot get past the pale, cool-toned blue-gray color paired with the neutral, warm, wood tones and tan color in the rug. I could never live with that particular color combination, with the grey walls and the gray furniture, but that is just my personal opinion. I need to have cool colors with other cool colors and warm colors with other warm colors in my living spaces.

Also, as others have mentioned, artwork on the walls will need to coordinate at least colorwise with whatever rug you select, and that will limit your options for wall art (which I consider to be more important to a room's decor than a rug).

I wish you the best in your decorating endeavor! Decorating can be fun, and a bit daunting, but at the end of the day, be sure to choose what appeals to you and to your eyes!

My living room rug has always been the key around which my whole house is decorated. The first time, it was an Oriental with navy, dark red, taupe, sea green, cream and steel blue, so I had lots of colors to pull from it. My current rug is mostly green with accents of navy, pink and blue in a sort of pared back floral. As another poster said, the rug shown in the picture in the original post is screaming its statement while I prefer a quieter tone.

I like statement rugs as I like patterns and colors but not that one. I would feel "funny" every time I walked into that room. The decorator obviously thinks that is a good pattern so I would be hiring a different decorator. That one would scare me as to what the finished decorated home would look and feel like.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of that rug either but if you love it who cares what we think...it's your home.

In that picture all I see is the rug, nothing else. I think a good design is one that's well balanced.

It reminds me of people who get too much lip plumper or whitens their teeth to an unnaturally paper white shade....all you notice is their darned lips or teeth.....

I don't like the rug in the photo at all. Not a fan of the colors or design. To be honest I don't really like much in the room.

We have a bold patterned living room rug. I'm sure some people wouldn't like it. The colors in the rug are repeated through the space and into the dining room, kitchen, and sunroom. We all have different likes and dislikes in home decor.
