NORTH CAROLINA HOUSE

It's a sweet traditional house, with nice architectural features, like Palladian-style windows.

"Chris Loves Julia" is a blog in which the couple detail all that they have gone through to renovate the house. It's fun to follow the progress.

Some rooms like the entry, are classically understated and simple, and others, like the office glimpsed also below, have lovely murals and vintage elements. I love a black front door, with brass fittings. Off-white walls are Sherwin-Williams "White Flour".

Their living room is a beauty, with those stunning quarter round windows.

Here it is with hints of fall. This paint color is the same as above, but they love that it changes in different lights, going from blue, green, gray. It's Farrow and Ball's chameleon-like "Pigeon".

Here, the walls look like a misty blue. It's a comfortable living room, and I love that fall-hued blanket on the couch.

I like this view of the kitchen, with the vintage desk facing a window. And that shining copper-color mixer winking away on their shelves-- yes!

That counter is too long! (OK, they do seem to have a lot of kids, and need places to have breakfast at, but...) I do like the Gothic arch alcove that the stove is in, and the industrial pendant lights.

The dining room is cozy, and the leafy wallpaper is a surprise. It's a Studio McGee paper, "Florencecourt".

Those endearingly chunky chairs are vintage, and the table is cerused oak.

Have you wondered why the downstairs rooms aren't all that large in a house like this? Here's the genius of this house--

They fitted in A DOWNSTAIRS MASTER BEDROOM!! Oh, if only all older houses could be configured like this. Ever since my own knee has blown out on me, I crave first floor bedrooms. ALWAYS a plus.

Julia says they had a light and airy bedroom forever, and she wanted something else. So they chose this rich mahogany color -- "London Clay" by Farrow and Ball.

While I'm not necessarily drawn to that color, I'll take a first floor bedroom anytime, and think about paint later.

I forgot to add this earlier-- This is their sample palette for the first floor, indicating the wall paint colors and wallpapers. To me, they flow and coordinate nicely:

And the last first floor room, the office/ study, with that gorgeous mural paper, ( "Derbyshire Antiqued") and old world look.

And looking back out the opposite direction, toward the entry hall.

I'll take their efficient looking laundry room too... Love the checkerboard porcelain tile floor, among other things.

The neat thing about "Chris Loves Julia", is that they tell you how they do everything, they give every last source. They're both a "how-to", and a visually pleasing interior look-book.

Love the murals. That copper-color mixer is very pretty, especially with the silver-color mixing bowl. I like the (bronze?) wastebasket in the office/study. The blue desk (and maybe the flower vase too) look custom-painted with a Farrow & Ball paint. The tile in the laundry room is nice. It looks like there may be two washers and two dryers in the laundry room.

So sorry to hear about your knee @Oznell , hope you will be able to get it back to good-as-new soon.

The house is okay but I'd have to tweak some things. For instance all the wallpaper and the mural would be removed and the bedroom needs some print on some of the accessories.

Beautiful, and I love the style! The only change I would make is to get rid of most of the blue--paint, accessories and furniture. Blue (even warm blues) look cold to me.

@Oznell That's almost the size of house we're prepping to downsize from...(weird sentence). We do have the downstairs bedroom, 12' island which was a mistake when we built the house 26 yrs. ago. I'm always walking around it to get to the frig. on other side. I should have done 2 islands with walk through in middle.

Our living room and dining room rarely is used. If you have a younger family, I guess you may need need those spaces. We live in the kitchen/suroom...all one room with large enough table, TV, etc.

I think they did a good job with the house, but as someone else said, it's a bit fussy for me, too.

This place is huge, love the outside, however it's a real shame they didn't spend MONY on the landscaping. Can we say BORING????

I'm lusting over the stove/range/oven unit. That's it.

Beautiful serene looking home.

As I have mentioned before I have a THING for a pretty laundry room..and love this one!

Lovely and very grand---I often wondering how people live in such a huge place----and then I wonder--how in the world would I clean it all--would take alot of work and alot of hands-----but fun to look at.

An impressive, if a bit bland, traditional. Agree that the landscaping needs an upgrade and the decor, to me, misses the mark with just a few exceptions. This home could've been a real beauty.

I agree about the flow of the house but dislike the rather bland bedroom; there are other mellow, calm colors that could step into the floor.

The mural is beautiful; I would have it in a more prominent place to be enjoyed.

She's a beauty.

Things I particularly like.

*The use of different trim color throughout the house. I've seen this done before and never really liked it because it seemed to break the flow of the house. So I always stick with one color trim (white). But in this house they used white, dark green (in office), blue grey (in dining rm) and it works beautifully. I really love it.

*The wallpaper in the dining rm and the mural paper in the office, lovely. I love bits of wallpaper so much, it can add such warmth and personality.

*The dark color (black?) on the wall underneath the laundry room cabinets and black shade on the sconce. They speak to the black sorta not necessarily pretty/utilitarian washing machine and dryer lids and makes them a part of the design and make sense.

*I do love the darker bedroom color but I like dark, moody, cocoony

*Changing color in the living rm, pretty color in all lights.

It's crazy how much a color can change depending on different conditions.

It's a beautiful house. When we were redoing our kitchen in a previous home, I wanted a lengthy island installed. The contractor brought in a big cIardboard box the same length and width of what I wanted and he told me to live with it for a few days....so glad he did that! I found myself walking myself to death since everything I needed was on the other side of the "island". Wise advice from the contractor. I cut down the size of the island and so glad I did.
Love the colors in this house; they work together very well. The only thing I don't like are the dining room chairs. The backs are too short; look like children's chairs to me.

@Trailrun23 , that was clever of him to demonstrate to you what a loooooong island would be like to live with! That's my reservation too; when it's that long, I feel cut off, and don't like having to take the long, scenic route around the end to get to the other side...
