Decorated Fall Mantle

This Fall, I decided to do something different. Instead of my usual orange and Autumn colors, I was inspired by peacock feathers.

I found a wonderful lady on Etsy, who has pet peacocks and sells the feathers that they shed at the end of each summer. I bought her gorgeous feathers and some dried flowers for the arrangements in my Egyptian alabaster vases.

For a little more interest, I added an Egyptian piece featuring Cleopatra as the goddess Isis. The cartouche in the upper left, is the cartouche of Cleopatra.

To the right of the clock, is a beaded, tea light lamp.

Also, on Etsy, I found a pillow cover printed with a William Morris peacock design.

That pillow is on a bentwood rocker, in front of the fireplace.

Nothing screams fall, but I like the peacock blue and dried flowers for a change from summer decor.

@Enufstuff Beautiful. I love peacocks. We used get some In our backyard. They would fly over from a farm and eat the seeds that were at the base of our feeders.

@luvzchiz Thank you very much. How exciting that you had peacocks land in your yard. I have never seen one flying. They are so beautiful.

The lady on Etsy lives in Tennessee and has a chicken farm.

One day, these two peacocks arrived unannounced, and they stayed, visiting her chickens.

She put information out to all the neighbors, to see if anyone was missing two peacocks. No response. So the boys stayed.

Her husband named them Lennie and Squiggy. ( If you are old enough to remember Laverne and Shirley). Lennie and Squiggy would just arrive unannounced to visit the girls.

Peacock blue has been one of my favorite colors since 4th grade. We were given fountain pens for penmanship and we had to buy our own ink. My best friend and I went to the

stationary store and found peacock blue ink. We both fell in love with that color.

@phoenixbrd Thank you very much. Peacocks and peacock feathers were a big influence during the Art Nouveau period, late 1800's to early 1900's, in both decor and fashion.

I love that period of design and Art Nouveau. My house was built in 1914 and I have some antique pieces from that time.

Oh boy, it must be past my bedtime. When I first looked at the picture you posted @Enufstuff , I didn't realize that was a mirror on the mantle. I thought it was a picture. I was trying to figure out what it was (looked like a UFO to me - haha). I thought it was a bit strange. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I was looking at a mirror and the "UFO" was the reflection of a ceiling light fixture. And, no, I haven't been drinking. LOL

Looks very nice. I love the peacock pillow!

@Citrine1 How astute and observant are you! Last fall, when I posted my orange florals on the mantle, I did mention the UFO

reflected in the mirror. It is actually where a gas light fixture would have been, back in 1914.

I was going to mention the UFO, in this posting. But, then I forgot. Now they are called UAP's. Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, since the government has admitted to research and

so much information has been released.

I didn't know they are called UAP's now. Sometimes I just can't keep up.

@Citrine1 On the History channel is a series called Ancient Aliens. A lot of reputable, government and military people have

come out with a lot of information.

In Newport R.I., at some of the mansions, the ceilings are painted with lovely scenes, clouds and cherubs. the scenes are reflected in mirrors.

I could paint some sky and clouds on my ceiling for the look of an alien craft in the sky. That would be amusing.

Just stunning, @Enufstuff , and original. Love your feathers mixed with dried flowers, those variegated alabaster vases, peacock and Egyptian touches!

So subtle and interesting, and the textures and colors, and the rich beads of your tea light lamp, give a fall feeling, without "screaming fall", as you say.

That's such an interesting clock, too-- and your gilt mirror is a beauty.

@Jaspertimes Honestly, I don't remember where I got that piece.

It could have been from one of the museums in Boston, possibly when they were having a special Egyptian exhibit,

many years ago.

I have been collecting all things Egyptian since the 1980's. Some came from museum shops and catalogs. I also found things at antique shows and flea markets. At a yard sale, I even found a large Egyptian design tapestry, which is hanging in my living room. Some items were gifts, since everyone knew I loved everything Egyptian.

When Kung Tut and Ramses exhibits were here, there was a plethera of items for sale. Papyrus art and Egyptian jewelry are also in my collection.

At one time, my living room looked like an Egyptian museum. I have packed much of it away. I have'nt bought anything new, for more than 25 years.

If you are looking for something you may try Etsy and ebay

for vintage items. Or, just google Egyptian decor if you are looking for new items.

The Cleopatra piece is plaster and could be called a plaque

or a frieze. I have several books on Cleopatra, since I have always been fascinated by her.

I just looked on Etsy and there a few similar pieces; two unpainted white for $49.00 and $45.00 and a black one for $160.

There are also some more affordable colorful papyrus paintings of Cleopatra and a lot of figurines.
