ANOTHER LEAD-FREE OPTION IN COFFEE MUGS

Always on the alert for these, and already have some lead-free ceramic mugs. The "Lead-safe Mama" blog is pretty skeptical even of any ceramic that says it's lead-safe, b/c some ceramic glazes have proved to be otherwise, contrary to their advertizing...

She does testing on numerous products, and she did recommend as lead-safe these Libbey 15 1/2 ounce Tapered Mugs at Amazon--

You get 6 of them for $25.99. I'm pleased with these made-in-Mexico mugs.

They're sturdy and roomy. Dishwasher safe, and the reviews say they are microwave safe. I love seeing amber tea and milk-swirled coffee through clear glass!

I used to have tea once a day, and sometimes coffee once a day. Now I have a cup of coffee almost every day, so the safety of mugs is more important to me-- apparently, the high acidic content of coffee, plus heat, may be a factor in interacting with potential lead in some glazed cups, so I figure it doesn't hurt to drink my coffee out of glass.

As far as the "cons" of the product-- these cups have a mold seam in the glass, and you will feel a seam on the handle. That doesn't happen to bother me, I'm considering them "rustic", ha. If it were a vintage Depression glass fancy teacup, that'd be different.

Another possible "con"-- they are fairly thick and sturdy, and some might say, slightly heavy. I have arthritis in my hands, but they're not too heavy for me (yet). They are not as heavy as my Temp-tations Woodland mugs.

I still like the look of these. Two can stack safely in the cupboard; more than that would topple. Oh almost forgot another "con"-- the stickers on the bottom don't want to come off with soap, bummer.

But I found that anything that acts like a solvent, will take the stickers off right away. I used white vinegar, and rubbing alcohol works too.

Well, more than you ever wanted to know!! But if anyone is looking for well-priced, utilitarian glass mugs, to me these are a nice option.

@Oznell I hadn't even considered the lead in my mugs. Thanks for posting this.

I drink beverages multiple times a day out of, probably, 20 year old mugs (yes, I keep things forever) haha

Who knows what types of chemicals they're leaching out. yikes!

Maybe time to upgrade....

A few years ago I went through a phase where I was concerned about lead in ceramic mugs & dishes. I had DH test them and they came out clean. I think he bought a kit on Amazon.

@GingerHead , true, who knew?! While I don't go in for a lot of health "scares" and am not, and cannot be, super-vigilant about everything, I did think this was a small thing I could do for health sake. There's so much that's out of our control, I figured it doesn't hurt to take reasonable precautions when it IS possible....

If you like the look of tea and milk in this mug, you might also enjoy a tea and heavy whipping cream swirl.

Better-half will buy heavy whipping cream for a recipe and there will always be a good bit left.

I normally take my tea plain, but who would waste perfectly good heavy whipping cream?

Ah, @just bee , Tillamook is not known to me. Could it be the type of ice cream kept in vaulted glory by insular dowagers in their million dollar state-of-the-art see-through freezers?

I feel I'm not hip enough for Tillamook. But do they make peach ice cream? Or maple walnut, or any walnut? If they do, I could probably work my way up to it. With 19 flavors under your belt, you're making rather nice progress, go @just bee !

We try (unsuccessfully) to mostly stay away from ice cream, but for our anniversary I made a no-bake ice cream cake with chocolate fudge topping that we are slowly, inexorably demolishing.... Pretty basic though-- it has an Oreo cookie crumb/ melted butter, bottom crust....

Tillamook is a good brand and also makes cheese. They are considered in the "best" catagory.

Just a postscript to add a bit more consumer info on these. At first, I didn't want to "test their sturdiness" in the microwave, not quite sure I believed they were microwave safe.

I usually make tea on the stove, and coffee in the Keurig, but I heat up the milk I put in coffee in the microwave, since I like really 'scalding' coffee. Milk or cream microwaves just fine in these glass cups.

And clear glass mugs just look so good in a cupboard! Sleek, crystalline, and they don't clash with any of my other dishes, just blend in nicely!

@Oznell , The mug holds about 13 ounces of liquid when filled to about a half-inch below the brim, and about 16 ounces when filled to the top of the brim. I just checked by filling the mug with water and then pouring the water into a Pyrex measuring cup.

That's a good size, @QVCisFun -- not so big that it's a swimming pool, but large enough to hold a satisfying cup of coffee.
