I have 2 problems. First is husband bought tons of Christmas stuff. I am tired of doing the decorating alone and family is far away so I donated most of it. He has bought new.

Second is that I'm a crafter. In the last 20 years I've been through quilting, making porcelain dolls and silk florals. I need to make the break.

We bought a condo last year. I donated a ton of décor as old but we seemed to have collected more. This week the carpets were cleaned and stuff carried out to garage. Now I'm wondering about how much comes back in. A flat surface doesn't have to have something on it.

And the walls...We have a couple of boxes of pictures and decorative shelves we never put up after the move. Now I am kind of liking the clean, bare wall look. Maybe it's the smaller size of the place.

Is there too much décor?

Everyone is different...lots of folks are minimalists, I love filled flat surfaces and don't mind the extra dusting...

And still others are varying in the gray area

I think everyone's different. I have seen houses where I would not want to live in because of the junk and tchotchkes....I couldn't stand it!

I like minimal décor, I've decided. I've reached a place where I can have décor in my home and it's not too much. I can look at something and say That is lovely, and not have to buy it. I can't stand to dust, so less is more for me.

I know some people have attachment issues to things and pretty things bring them joy, that's fine for them and it's certainly not "wrong", it's just not how I like to live.

I like minimalism and simplicity now, the older I get. I have donated many things, to my grown children and to charity.

Now, if I can just transfer this "idea" for my home, into my wardrobe! I admire women who can do more with less, regarding clothing and shoes. perhaps I will get there one day! It is my goal!

I know what you mean.....we have moved many times throughout the years and have accumulated so much. Even after getting rid of a lot, I still have stuff in boxes I never brought back in. I really don't like to dust either. I think Also, in the summer I like less things around.

I love a clean, uncluttered look! When I observe sets on television shows and in movies, they're always pretty uncluttered, too. I feel more at peace when there is open space around me. I am constantly fighting the clutter battle. It seems that stacks of junk mail, coupons, magazines, etc. grow when my back is turned!

I used to collect owls & have over 100 of them. I got tired of dusting them every week so I boxed most of them. I also boxed up numerous pictures & a bunch of other stuff. I got rid of a bunch of stuff too. I hated the clutter. So much easier to clean when you don't have to dust or move so much stuff. LOL!!! We have a lot of stuff in the attic & a few closets we no longer need. Soon we will be going through them to get rid of more stuff. I told DH he needed to clean out the attic because we have not used any of that stuff in years so we don't need it. I'm sure not going up there to clean it up if he dies before me. I would sell the house & leave it all up there. We want to move when he retires so it will make it easier when/if we do that.

There's no one ""right"" way to do it. Live in your new place for a little while till you hit a happy place with your decorating. It makes sense to me that you'd want less clutter in a smaller place.

It's really a matter of personal preference, there's no right or wrong. They type of house you are in is also a factor. Our former home was big 100 year old colonial with large room, mutiple entrances to each room, a formal dining room, a huge reception hall. It was formal home for a different era. A big house like that needed "stuff". Pictures on the walls, larger furniture. Lots of "stuff". But when we downsized into a brand new, very modern condo; the opposite was true. The rooms were smaller, the walls were white, the carpet was light. We had sliding glass doors and light, light, light. We loved the "lightness" of new condo, so we consiously kept the decorating touches to a minimum. We also decorated with lighter colors. We've been in our condo for 6 years and almost everything in it is new now. The older things that we brought with us from the old house just weren't a good fit for the new place.

I went through a stage when I wanted "stuff", now I want less. As with what others have said, it is easier to clean and I also just like the clear, clean look of less "stuff". I have been working on this for a while (couple years), and almost there, still a few more items to choose between. I have also had a discussion with my daughters about gifting (for gifts I prefer something that can be used up, not more stuff), they understood completely, thank goodness.

IMO - there is a huge difference between decor and clutter. However, I suppose it is possible for the decor to morph into clutter when there is too much.

My DH is a latent hoarder and would have clutter everywhere if it were up to him. He thinks I keep everything too bare but I have asked friends and they agree with me that our home is nice and cozy and does not need any more stuff. I do think people who live with clutter actually get some kind of comfort from it so I do allow my DH to keep his den as he likes.

I find bare walls boring with no personality. I think too many people put too much stuff on the wall me included. I wanted to have a clock wall and now I am taking it down with just the big clock left to hang over the buffet. I like to mix my wall decor with original water colors and metal art as well,as other pictures. I don't do personal photos of my family. They are in my bedroom and in the lower cabinets of my media center. This is just my opinion. I am not the one to ooh and awe over other peoples pictures. I am polite though.
