VINTAGE TWIST ON A COASTAL LOOK

In honor of high midsummer, I guess, the online furniture emporium One Kings Lane did a little article on 'coastal chic', but done all with vintage items. Of course, in their picture above, they loaded it up to prove their point, but I think you can extract one or two ideas and get nice "summery" impact.

For example, I love the old seaglass colored bottles, right next to a giant shell, and a straw hat.

They had other neat vintage ideas to suggest a coastal look:

Framing a gorgeous silk scarf, like this Hermes one--

Charming old souvenir ware, like this French shell box--

Hanging an old maritime flag--

These whimsical Bitossi cups are are my favorites, along with the Fornisetti coasters. To ceramics lovers, Bitossi is a gold standard of Italian pottery!

This old fellow is so cute and friendly. I'd not touch his mellow brass patina at all-- it's perfect.

'Coastal' has always been a thing, an evocative, perfectly valid suggestion of all things seashore-- but in late years, big box stores have overdone it, pushing and pushing a certain look. That's why going all vintage, plus being sparing with the touches, seems appealing to me.

The great thing about it, you don't need much to give you that windswept feeling. I wouldn't be stringing faux starfish as in the first picture. But a small maritime painting, and just a few other well-thought out touches strike me just right.

One Kings Lane's online site is bafflingly already bannering features like "Easing into Fall!", ha, so this is my little summer rebellion.

Edited to add-- Duh, I forgot something important. I think you can do "coastal" just by the colors you choose. Have you ever seen a room that made you think of a beach, and ocean's horizon, an island or a seaside cliff, just through the colors they used? I have, and I love it.

Love the "table" at the foot of the bed. I wonder how long it took to get it level!!

@faeriemoon , I know, it's like magic! The poor photographer's assistant, stacking and restacking the books till it "worked".... I suspect there might have been a little backstage trickery involved in achieving that almost surreal level-ness...

@Oznell I love this! I want all of it

I live in a coastal state and have some of that type of decor in my home, mostly in the master bedroom and bath. My master bath colors are turquoise walls with light beige tiled shower and floor. I have sea shells (that I've collected) and coastal inspired decor all around the master tub, candles etc. It is a true beachy feel for sure!

Lovely colors, but the thought of having glass bottles at the foot of my bed tenses me up. Every time I would need to grab the extra blanket in the middle of the night, they surely would end up on the floor.

My reaction was so visceral that I needed to linger a long time over the beautiful Hermes scarf to calm down.

I'm no fan of the Coastal look. I think it can get real kitschy, real fast if you don't know what you're doing. But how cute is that dolphin and those whale pillows?!!! 🥰

I love all of it. I am a true Beach person. We live in a Beach Community and vacation at the beach. I can't get enough of it...and I am a Pisces.

I'm not a Vintage girl so it doesn't appeal to me but it is still very pretty for those that are into that. Normally, I would think those whale pillow shams werre cheesy but I really like them and they work well here.

I like the vintage look of these things...I love iron beds, so the first pic is my favorite photo. I also like the bedding. My late MIL owned a similar trinket box covered in shells and pearls. It is so nice to see a coastal theme done with well-thought out vintage pieces and not a single fishing net to be seen. Well done!

@Oznell "I love the old seaglass colored bottles," I don't understand why they are at the foot of the bed, if I did that, I would bump into that shelf over and over, and bottles would be flying everywhere.
