QUEBEC COTTAGE

Luke Havekes, a Montreal designer, found a modest old 1841 farmhouse in Knowlton, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. For those who may not be familiar, the Eastern Townships are a rolling, lake-dotted, forested region, that serves as a blissfully rural "getaway" area for Montrealers, much in the way that New England, or Bucks County, for example, might for New Yorkers...

Again, while it may not be my style, I appreciate him. What I like is that he's going with his OWN aesthetic, nothing cookie cutter about his cottage. It's all built around his affinity for luxurious Persian, Indian and Turkish rugs, and his palette is a jewel-tone one.

(Apologies for the narrowness of some images. For some reason, this was mostly the format on the Domino site--)

He decided to keep the warm-toned, Mexican crafted pavers that previous owners had put in the kitchen, and just had them buffed up.

Even the bathroom gets a glorious little vintage rug.

I like that each individual bedroom has its own personality.

As more of a "light and airy" person, cabin-like interiors are not my first choice. But this seems like a very snug, quintessentially "Quebec" retreat. One can imagine him here in the depths of winter, jumping out from one of those cozy bedrooms to cross-country ski through the woods!

I want to soak in that bathtub with a glass of wine....but someone would have to help me get out of it....LOL!

The jewel tones are perfect for this cottage and it does have a cozy look.

The steep open stairs would be a no no for me.

Looks good to me, but I agree with the open staircase, I would not like having that in my home.

Quite lovely, just a bit too dark for me. I prefer streaming sunlight and white.

I do like many of the touches including the sweet sunflowers and blue fireplace.

The bedrooms look cozy and warm. especially with the adorable dog.

I like the bathroom as well.

@Oznell I like many parts but that stairway -- no way. I would have to have handrail on the outside of it. Not very safe for anyone. JMO

What a pretty lake cottage. All of the area rugs are beautiful. My eye was drawn to them even before I read what you had written. The only thing(s) I would change would be to add some complementary prints for some of the accessory items (window treatments, throws, pillows, etc.). The colors used are beautiful but I think it needs some more prints to just add a bit more visual interest.

This is so cute and cozy.

I would replace the kitchen stools with something more comfortable and add a railing on the other side of the stairs...then I'm happy to be there.

The cottage itself isn't bad. The decor, such as it is, doesn't check any boxes for me.

I love the use of wood, however, the top heavy ceilings give me claustrophobia.

I loved most of this wonderful home! I would love to see a unique solid look coffee table like these from Wayfair; my fav is the bottom one

There is much to appreciate here, but I couldn't be trusted on any of the stairs -- including these.

That top step would get me every time.

@ECBG , your eye for the right touch hasn't failed you-- I love your rustic, yet sophisticated choices for coffee table in that space, much better than the big ottoman there now!

OMgosh, that's exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago. A step JUST LIKE THAT got me. I put my foot down to go to the next step but it was only air-where's the rest of the step I thought as I was falling. I landed hard on my butt, not so bad, but then the inertia of the whole thing threw me back and knocked my head against the wall! It wasn't on a landing as in the picture-it was a lower level staircase that turned at the end and it was a shortened step. The step that wasn't there!!!!
