COUNTRY IN THE CITY

I suppose some people take the viewpoint that you can't do a rustic setting in a high rise. (Or, in the reverse, a very traditional room in a modern one-story,) That's too purist for me-- and clearly for California's Blu Canoe Studio. It's YOUR home-- do what pleases you most.

Here's the apartment's neighborhood in Los Angeles:

Blu Canoe is known for cozy, but fresh, impeccably sourced rustic looks, and here, she's mixed them with a little modern in this Los Angeles apartment. I think that old blue cupboard in the corner just makes the living room--

The midcentury modern, white leather Eames chair above looks at ease with the weathered cupboard, and for me, the whole room "jells".

Above, the room from a little way back. That Eames chair was not the only non-rustic note-- the bent-arm lamp is briskly modern too. And the tie-dyed ottomans.

Love all the light pouring in, the old yellowware in the cupboard, the fat ginger jar lamps, the big, simple, vintage metal-lidded glass jar collection, that subtly alludes to the whole airy, window glass-dominated space --

The room gives me a good feeling, and I'm not 'rustic' in the styles I normally prefer -- but this is well done and welcoming...

Nice spot to have coffee, admire your antique crocks, and look out over the world. (That shelf, strategically placed, makes me slightly less anxious about bumping into the glass and falling through....)

The blond chairs with the classic, marble-topped tulip table are another fresh combination. She likes brooding oil portraits.

And black-and-white art photography...

Sweet bedroom, with lovely textiles, and guardian bunnies next to the bed and on dresser. Love the old mirror and chest.

Things get changed up and moved around a lot in the apartment, which I like-- now the blue chair's over here...

I was reading their blog, and Blu Canoe ( I think her actual name is "Kelley", but not sure!) has a whole philosophy about how to do a layered look of things you truly love, without going overboard into clutter land. She showed another house they did, and suggested, that if there are collections, do just up to 3 of them in any given room, no more.

She gave an example of this darling room, and the owner's 3 collections-- Hubley dog door stops, Roseville pottery, and vintage canning jars:

(Those little iron dogs are so cute.)

I personally might do maybe fewer things on the mantel, but her point still holds. Together, the old items are soulful, and as she says, they help write the owner's "story"...

The only pic I didn't like was the blonde chairs and the tulip table - just not my taste. Otherwise, it all looked very nice. I get the willies when I'm in a building that high up LOL Have lived in CA all my life and all I can think about is - what happens in a big earthquake with all those windows.

The bells in the bottom wreath in the last picture just gave me an idea for Fall into Winter. I have plain wreaths and purchased brass bells on sale after the holidays. The raffia or twine gives a casual appearance for my wooded bay window view.
My Jack Russell Terrier won't sit that still though!

Everything was beautiful, furnishings, artwork and decor. I did however use my imagination to switch settings, picturing a beautiful home in the country. To those who dwell in a high rise in the city, enjoy every moment including the impressive skyline. I even like the towels in #7 which I assume is the bathroom. Artfully done.

The garden was extraordinary.

The white house with the blue trim is my fantasy home. And the sweet dog in the last shot was the perfect way to end the tour.

You knew I would love this insanely, dear friend! I would change some accessories with my own collection.

I have an insane fear of heights. I would have to figure something out! I would love a visit though, just to see if I could handle the elevator!!!

I believe a homes interior should reflect it's inhabitants and grow and change as they do.

So many of the homes shown are show places, beautiful but to perfect. Nice to see a home that doesn't fit it's skin but what it's family wants.

I thought the rooms were lovely in their furnishings and decor. I also love vignettes and enjoy displaying them around the house. The place isn't cluttered but it does have pretty touches which perk it up and give it warmth. The pottery on the shelves , so very nice and the blue cupboard outstanding. Designing is enjoyable and fun and this place looks like much thought and love was put into it.. The downside, being that high up is not for me. I do love the views but not being so high up in any building with windows from the ceiling to the floor!!!!! Oh yes, the gardens, magnificent!

I agree that a lot are too pretty too perfect to live in but I enjoy seeing beautiful homes. i especially enjoy seeing homes that are different from my own.

That apartment...just no. The floor to ceiling black-framed windows, the lack of architectural detail, white walls, bland fireplace all scream for industrial, modern or mid-century modern. Certainly not rustic. Looks ridiculous. Liked the Eames chair and the quilt, though.

It's very warm and cozy, but I would never live that high up, especially in California with all of the earthquakes ..
