Don t understand why

People love wood floors but plop a big area rug on them. Just moved into a new home with wood floors and really don t want to put a big rug down.

But then again I have a York's that thinks that a rug is a pee pee pad, lol!

@ollie5 People add rugs to rooms because they add warmth, define seating areas and help with acoustics. The Yorkie is your problem, not so easily solved. Be careful, dog pee can ruin hardwoods. Better review housebreaking 101.

Not me. DH asked if I was going to buy a rug to put on the wood floor in the living room. I told him No way I'm covering it up. Besides that's just more work for me rolling up to move so I can vacuum???

Say no more. I have 2 chihuahua's. My new home had hard wood floors. I added a beautiful rug. My two critters thought "Wow, look at that pee pee pad!" No more pretty rug.

There are some really beautiful rugs but do not have any in my home. Rugs increase fall risk and do not need that.

I understand why people do, but I don't use a rug on mine. It's a dog and cat hair trap and on occasion a "dumping pad". Plus the shedding it goes through if it's wool is a pain. I love the looked of polished hardwood.

My two story home has 100% hardwoods on the first level...kitchen and bathrooms included.

I have a rug inside of the exit doors...they keep the floors clean and dry. I have one in front of the kitchen sink.

Hardwood floors can be slippery especially in stocking feet. If you have pets, their nails can scratch the floors. I have an area rug in my dining room and it adds warmth and color and keeps my floor from getting scratched by sliding chairs.

Right now my living room and family room floors are bare, but in the winter, I sometimes have an area rug in there. Wood floors can be cold.

Most people want a rug to stand on when they get out of bed. Me included. Rugs also keep the dust down.

I have two dogs...both are 100% house trained to go outside. They have never used a pee pad or my carpet to urinate on. They both shed a lot, so I have to clean up the tumbleweeds (fur) everyday and I have air purifiers that collect dog hair and dander too.

Then again, some people have hardwood floors, but prefer carpet, so they use large area rugs.

We have kicked around the idea of getting hardwood flooring. But I wonder about how well it will hold up.

We currently have stone looking vinyl tile. It has held up well with the dog going in and outside. And furniture being moved.

But not sure that hardwood floors would be able to handle it. My brother comes regularly to visit. And never fails somehow he slams the one easy chair into the wall every time he sits in it. It has damaged the wall. I can't help but think that the base of the chair must move when he sits. It will end up scratching the floor.

I will need a rug to keep the hardwood floors looking reasonable. So I am back where I started. I will keep the vinyl tile. It still looks good.

I have mats at entry doors, and a bath mat, but NO rugs in the living areas of my house. Too much of a fall risk for my husband.

@ollie5 When we moved into our home 10 years ago, we put an area rug in our family room and our cat picked out a spot to continually pee on. I guess she was marking our new home as hers. Anyway, someone suggested putting orange peels on the spot and it worked! She stopped peeing there and never did it again. She does however have a thing with our bathmat in the master bath. Haven't been able to brreak her of that habit. I have a teak mat in front of the shower and we put up the one in front of the tub when we are not using it but she still manages to pee on it regularlly.

I need one under the kitchen table and chairs. Pulling out chairs makes scratches. Our living room has one under our two lounge chairs, the other in front of the couch. Also have a runner in my galley kitchen. I don't even use a dishwasher in case it overflows and ruins my floors.

@Kachina624 It seems like everytime we look there is more of a selection and so many materials to pick from.

I am so tempted to go back to the guy who designed our kitchen. He was wonderful. After I picked out my kitchen cabinets, counter and appliances, he gave me a choice of about 12 different flooring samples. I was so happy. The store had hundreds maybe thousands of samples. I never would have known what to pick.

But he picked an excellent quality and samples that went well with the colors of the cabinets and counter top.

But I made a note about vinyl faux hardwood planks. That sound exactly what the room would need.

@Kachina624 The vinyl wood-look planks are what we have in our family room, most of the house has oak hardwood floors, baths and kitchen are tiled. You are exactly right, I love having seating areas defined, otherwise I felt the furniture was 'floating' in the rooms, I think the area rugs give each area a bit of warmth.

@phoenixbrd I also love Oriental rugs on my hardwood floors.

I have them in the living room, dining room and TV room.

In the upstairs bedrooms are just regular area rugs.

One of my daughters has hardwood floors and has never used rugs. She has asthma sufferers in her family, so she avoids rugs.

When I go over there, the rooms are cold and echo-ie. (If that is a word)

If you'd I want a rug, try an indoor/ outdoor one . DD got one for her new DR and I couldn't tell it was one until she told me. It is a deep green and taupe small animal print. Her two naughty cats and three preschoolers are no match for it

80i find bare wood floors to be uncomfortable to walk on and cold. I prefer a rug to cozy things up.

I had them installed when our kitchen was remodeled. We knocked out a wall between the kitchen and dining room. The dining room and hallway which connects to it had carpet over hardwood. Part of the kitchen extended into the dining room space, and I wanted one uniform floor. The carpet was removed, and vinyl planks were installed in the kitchen, and over the dining room and hall hardwood. The living room and one bedroom still have carpet over hardwood, and two bedrooms have just hardwood.

Your house sounds beautiful with all those hardwoods...but have never seen hardwoods in a bathroom. How do you keep them from getting damaged from water? Can't imagine a typical math mat being enough.

I have LVP (vinyl hardwoods) thru my house except bedrooms.

I love them easy care I even had them put in my guest bathroom.

I have large area rug in DR under table, rug in LR area and nothing in den.

I like the look the rugs give it otherwise since my rooms are open concept it finishes the look.
