UNCOMMON VINTAGE KITCHEN

I wish House and Garden UK had shown the outside of this Toronto house-- judging by the interior architecture, it must be striking.

Designer Ashley Montgomery did the kitchen. There were only a couple of shots of it, but what's there, is choice.

Love the intricate plaster crown molding, vintage chandelier, (there's a beautiful ceiling medallion that the chandelier goes into), the burnished copper counter top on island, the Calacatta Monet marble backsplash and perimeter counter top, the custom-built whimsically wavy counter stools....

I hoped this supposedly closer-in photo would show more detail, but it's not really. Oh, another love of mine is the sophisticated color combo of pale blue ( arched hood and trim), and burgundy ( the island) The plaid fabric shade by Linwood incorporates both colors.

At least here below they showed it from a different angle. Toronto designer Ashley Montgomery, on the left, says her style is "old world, re-imagined". Homeowner Rivki Rabinowitz, on the right, is a food blogger and podcaster, who describes her style as "a grandma who likes to party".

I think the homeowner chose the right designer for this project. Rivki said that in her previous kitchen, she had all neutrals, thinking to play it safe. You can tell, that "safe" is not her style. To her, that previous kitchen was sterile, and she determined this one would be different.

I imagine that a food blogger, with all the cooking and spending time in the kitchen, would really need one that was sympatico!

Had never heard of "Calacatta Monet" marble before-- it is described as a base of ivory, with natural burgundy/ lilac veins running through it. How harmonious with this room.

The pale blue color of the hood (and walls and trim, not visible in these photos) is Farrow and Ball's "Borrowed Light", and the burgundy of the island is Benjamin Moore's "Raphael".

For all its 'luxe', the room feels inviting and cozy to me.

I think the pale blue hood and the plaid fabric look like they belong in a different kitchen.

The colors flow, but I prefer neutrals, items like flowers or baskets, or food colors in a kitchen.

I like the fruit bowl and vase on the island. And the floors. The rest I'd rip out to the studs. That's all I'll say on that.

I think it looks like a hodge podge of materials, colors and styles. Definitely not for me.

If you got rid of the curtain, and made all the cabinets that beautiful blue color, I would like it.

The chandelier, plaid shade, scallops, modern marble, range hood....nothing flows to my eye.

I don't think there is anything at all that I like about this kitchen.

I don't get the paintings propped up against the wall by the stove. Good fire starter if they should fall over.

I am not a fan of much in this kitchen except I do like the solid slab backsplash--not the pattern of the material tho, just the nice one-piece slab--so easy to keep clean. There's too much flourish for me and unnecessary things like that chandelier--the cabinets are way too dark for me too. And a pet peeve for me--is a sink on the island----kind of waste of island space --put the sink under a window---leave that real estate smooth and uninterrupted.---feel the same about having a cook top there too----

I think it's very cool although I don't care for the plaid window treatment or the counter stools. So nice to see some movement back in the stone options. Stone was getting stale IMO. Lately I see a many backsplashes featuring stone with a lot of movement. Makes things interesting.

Overall, I'll pass. It's not unattractive but neither does it have great appeal for me. Unlike most it seems, I do like the plaid window covering but not much of a fan of the cabinets or the marble. This was probably a costly job but it doesn't do much for me.

I don't care for the mix of materials, colors, & patterns. Nothing seems to "go together" to my eye. I'm not really loving the individual items either. This kitchen isn't for me.

I think it's beautiful. That being said, nice to look at, but I don't think it is practical to cook in daily. Too many niches to collect grease/dust.

The only change I would make is a different window covering, I prefer curtains. I love that chandelier!
