BEFORE AND AFTER HOME FIX-IT

Not everybody wants to change what they find in their houses that is not to their taste; but some hardy souls really do a bang-up job of transformation, on their own.

'Builder oak' staircases, in ostensibly traditional houses, are mostly not traditional in actuality, especially in the finishes chosen for the wood.

I LOVE how diy blogger Centsational Girl achieved her classic, timeless vision. This is one for the ages!

Before:

I don't imagine that achieving the wainscoting look was very difficult. It really helped to get rid of the grimy runner and re-do the steps too.

I like it. Looks good. But now they need to the hardwood floors. They are a different color than the darker wood on steps and bannister.

My foyer is the original one with dark wood. I have a very similar table in my foyer.

A beautiful improvement; however, I'm expecting those dark wooden steps to scratch and look ugly in a short period of time without something like a rug runner protecting them.

They also could be slippy. I have experience with that. Dogs slipping on the steps. The elderly not comfortable with them. I wouldn't cover the entire step as before. I think a rug would make this entryway look more cozy, as well.

Yes, mine did scratch quite a bit.

I guess it depends on whether the owner wants to replace the tops of the steps or replace a rug runner every so often.

I love the updated version myself.

As far as the stair treads, I don’t like carpeting on stairs.

And plain wood is easy to keep because we change from our “outside shoes” to “inside shoes” most of the time. We also have wood floors with area rugs throughout the house, and changing shoes keeps the floors in good shape and is more sanitary.

100% better. I agree they need to do all the flooring now.

My sisters house used to have carpet with tile in areas with water. Now it's almost all hardwood flooring including the stairs. Looks so much better.

Well yes, the 'after' is better. Pretty much anything would be an improvement over 'golden oak' and bland carpeting. To me the 'upgrade' is rather stark yet dull, drab, uninspired and is not much to my liking.

About the contrast in staircase wood vs. flooring: although she said she's not one to be overly concerned with matching, she indicated she had plans in future to darken the floor, preferring dark finishes.

Personally, in theory, I don't mind some variation in a house, esp. if it is an old house. Lots of times different rooms and sections are done at different times, resulting in different wood tones. If the two woods are adjacent, and the undertones tend to really "fight" with each other, then that would bother me some.

Following her process, from plywood steps all the laborious way to satiny deep finished wood, was awe inspiring to me-- I so respect those who personally labor and go through all the horrible, disruptive stages to achieve the look we take for granted! She even outlined some shortcuts to staining that are invaluable to have in a homeowner's arsenal.

She did this in 2009, by the way, adhering to timeless principles.

It is beautiful but sticks out like a sore thumb against what the rest of the house must look like. So is she going to gut the house? I guess she bought it to gut it.

That sure wouldn't appeal to me!

I haven't seen enough of the rest of her house to be able to tell, @Sooner . What I did see was pretty. My guess is she's one of those enterprising do-it-yourselfers who loves to create her own idea of harmony and beauty in her home.

My dad did something very similair to this in my parents home. That along with a few other changes really changed the look of their front entrance.

Edited to add that I saw a comment about a rug runner. That's what my parents used on their stairs with the wood showing on each side.

While it is an improvement I would have carpeting on the steps for safety purposes and also for color. I do not care for the black color on the steps. Just some changes.

We moved to much darker wood floors a few years ago and I wish I hadn't. It shows every spec of dust or crumb imaginable. I am always cleaning it. Would lighten it up again but are about to sell so will wait. Just had new carpet put on the stairs. The wood stairs were too noisy and stark for my taste. To each his own. I also have a table very similar to the one pictured in my foyer under the staircase.
