I thought I needed a new battery in my garage door opener,so I purchased 2,because that's how they came,10.50 for 2.big waste of time and money!door still would t open and it was making a funny noise. I ended up calling my land lord which I dreaded,and he thought he fixed it but as soon as he left door would not open.so he is replacing the motor but not u til Monday or tues.my car has never sat outside before so I hope it starts.

When my garage door motor stopped working I just opened the door manually. Most all doors have an emergency release pull-lever which can be used in the event of a motor fail or power outage.

All you have to do is grab that handle, give a good pull and you'll know when it's done b/c it makes a loud clicking sound. After that you can open your door the old-fashion way...pull it up using your hands.

Believe me, it's not that difficult. TBH the first time it's scary but after that you'll know what to do after that.

Excellent suggestion @SilleeMee . I've pulled on that override cord when I had a single garage. It wasn't difficult and the door opened easily. Now we have a double sized door so my husband opens it manually when need be.

Did you check to see if anything was obstructing the electric eye that is placed on both sides of the the bottom edge of the side track?

@DesertdiThis was the reason why my garage door wouldn't open! My neighbor came over to help me and I accidentally moved one side out of place so he just moved it back! Those "eyes have to face one another. Then another time the switch on the wall to open the door was lose so he tighten the switch with a screw driver.

Usually those electric eyes, when obstructed, will allow the door to open but not close which is what they are designed to do to prevent someone or something from getting crushed by a garage door coming down on them.

I had an issue a couple of years ago, but it only happened in the cold months. It would open, but when I would go to close it, it would come half way down. then go back up again.After a couple tries it would be okay until the next time. Had a new motor installed and have had no problems with it since.

Depending on the door's material, opening a double door can be very, very difficult. I would rather keep the car parked outside and know I can access it than have it trapped inside.

If he did work on the door perhaps a reset button needed to be pushed.

I've tried to pull on the rope thingee,but I can't pull it up
I've also tried pushing up g door from the outside and still can't get the dang door open

There's a small metal lever that come down when you pull the rope. To lock the door after shutting, you must get some long-handled tool and push the lever up. I use an old cane I keep just for that purpose. It'll click when its in place. Then the rope is ready to pull again.

@Kachina624, Will this reset the electronic opener or does some sort of reprograming have to take place after the power is back on.

@tiny 2No, it won't reset anything. It just a manual method of opening the door without the motor or electricity. Everyone ought to know how to use it, just in case....

Q friends thankyou for all your info on garage door.hopefully this problem will be fixed by tues.i am in central ill and tonight it is not suppose to be as cold as last night.so I won't worry about car not turning over

If your car's battery is in good shape, it won't mind the cold at all. Otherwise, please try to open the garage door manualy so you can park the car inside.

Make sure the garage door is not locked. Pulling the rope takes some oomph. Give it a good tug until the lever moves free.
