This must be the year for this type of problem. My gas range oven is pretty much kaput. It was original to the house which was built in 1998. It actually started to fail a few years back, but I just kept pushing it because I did not want to be bothered.

I do have AHS insurance so I called them towards the end of September. They made the determination that the unit was too old for replacement parts and that they had to replace it.

They gave me three choices for replacement. I took the option where they sent me an online link and I could pick out what I wanted. Plenty of choices from Lowes with no out of pocket costs to me besides my $125.00 deductible. Only difficulty was that I had to find a unit that could fit into the space that is cut out for the gas range. Secondly, I did not want a unit that would fly me to the moon and back. They all do a million and one things nowadays.

I finally settled on a whirlpool that is stainless steel and black, that seems as if I could master all of it's features. The first delivery that whirlpool brought into my home, once they started to unpack it they realized that it was damaged. I had to reject the shipment, and wait for another unit to be shipped. The new oven will be delivered towards the end of this week. Then the installers have to come to my home and take out my old unit and install the new unit.

It's been an ordeal, but I am trying not to complain. I am only out of my deductible for a new gas range oven.

Our stove came with the house (year 1980). We never use the oven...only the cook top, so for the past 35 years it worked fine....but we were down to only one top electric coil burner that worked and three not working...and yesterday the last working burner died....the wiring is just old and burnt out. So I am using an electric cook plate for now with one burner.... an inconvenience.

now we are forced to buy a new stove. I hate buying new appliances...always such a big inconvenience ..... 😩 uggggg. Dreading this...

I am someone who is not concerned about having the newest and the best...or looks...hate renovating and updating. I repair everything and keep everthing up to date for the bones of the house....but appliances....and such could care less...

I've done some recent ones pre-and post-covid. Happy I did them, happy their done!

But now my floors and kitchen need updating next, and I'm not only not in the mood to shop, but the pricing, (I got pricing on flooring right before Covid hit and was ready to go forward with it...sadly didn't happen), is 3 times more and deliveries still a year out.

So, best to get shopping, you may luck out somewhere, but from what I'm hearing, depending what it is and where you happen to shop for it...deliveries are still way out there.

If you're going to replace it with another electric range with a ceramic cooktop, get a black cooktop, even if it doesn't match anything else in your kitchen. I wish I'd done this when we replaced our coil electric cooktop. The lighter ones are extremely difficult to keep clean. Good luck!

We always go for the basics too. I'm a full contact, things cook over, pots and pans get banged around kind of cook. So, none of those fancy stoves for me.

BTW, have you looked at your neighbors trash? One year our stove conked out during the holidays, and I didn't know what I was going to do. Then I saw our neighbor hauling their old (really ugly) stove out to the curb. They were upgrading to a fancy model. I called them, and they said it worked. We procured it, and it lasted for 10 more years!

Good luck!

SeaMaiden--I recently went thru the similiar situation last year. My stove came with the house and that was 28 years old. I like to keep appliances simple and easy to clean. I also needed it to be in the inventory so I wasn't waiting on that problem. That really slimmed down the choices which was okay with me. I found that the indenpent appliance store had sales and in warehouse stoves ready for delivery. This is where I purchased mine.

Some of the big box stores have lots of sales but look on the website for "in stock" items. You can usually pick up within the week.

One item that I was surprised by is the quality of the oven racks. Some of them are very light weight and stick while sliding out. I made my decision between models based on the stronger oven racks.

Good luck.

Of course you had to wait until stove top cooled, before cleaning

any spills on the burner areas.

I have bought two more stoves with smooth cook tops and have never seen white again, since the 70's. The one I bought about a year ago has a black top, like all the rest that I have seen in recent years.

I really liked the white top and would have liked to have gotten another one in white.

So for those who are budget conscious, why not try Habitat Restore, FB Marketplace, Craigslist or NextDoor?

I picked up a brand new in box retro sink at a Restore type of shop. Habitat offers pick up service here, you may find someone who will deliver and install if you inquire.

I bought new in box 2nd quality Mannington flooring on CL. Was enough for a 3rd bedroom used as office flooring. Marked as 2nd quality, I couldn't find anything wrong with it.

If you need installatìon services, try your local real hardware store and ask if they have contractor referrals. I'm so done with Big Box we know nothing stores.

You never bake anything? Maybe that's why that stove lasted so long, it was only being half used for 42 years. I don't know what you are dreading. The salesperson isn't going torture you...lol.

I forgot to ask the obvious......have you tried to replace just the elements? I know you said the wiring was worn out? They shouldn't be wired but they do burn out.

There are two basic styles of element. Both pop out, no tools needed. Try Amazon if you're armed with Make and Model.

I wish I'd done this when we replaced our coil electric cooktop. The lighter ones are extremely difficult to keep clean. Good luck!

@Eileen in Virginia

Thought the glass cooktops only came in black.
