NEW YORK APARTMENT

New York designer Robert Passal has such an eye for color, and mixing the best of vintage and modern, among other things. Here he did a potentially problematic apartment for a New York broker and her husband.

The living room has enviably high ceilings, but like many Manhattan apartments, is long and narrow.

Love the drama of the sky blue curtains and the chairs playing off the rosy vintage rug. They also have a cozy library for private "flopping", so this living room can be more of an elegant entertaining area. Using your "enlarge" function to get all the details is almost a must on these rooms!

Sleek contemporary gold supports for vintage chinoiserie, the kind of contrast that always works for me--

The homeowner is an avid collector of oil paintings of all kinds, and Passal works them in beautifully all through the apartment. Lovely settee and pillows.

A long hallway becomes an opportunity for a gallery of the owner's more traditional art. I can't tell if the wall color is a pale, sunny chartreuse, like the lamp in the previous picture -- if it is, I like it.

More of the dining banquette that you can glimpse at the end of the above hallway...

As sunny as the rest of the apartment is, here's a corner of the deliciously moody library. Nice combo of the antique portrait miniatures, the seascape, and that lively lamp..

More of the library, with its comfortable sectional and stunning art wall. Another one of their beautiful rugs. I couldn't discover most of the paint colors in the home, but the one in this room is "Well-Bred Brown", by Sherwin-Williams.

An antique desk saves space and does excellent double duty as a charming night stand.

The light-filled cream and green kitchen looks like such a cheerful spot for breakfast.

When I was younger I dreamed of living in a Brown Stone village apartment. Of course when a teen, I didn't think these places cost so much. I still love Manhattan and spent much of my life visiting , shopping, going to restaurants, plays, concerts museums and am happy I did it . But I could never afford to live the life I wished for when a teenager!!!!

This apartment is beautiful. I absolutely love the library because I have always loved a library room filled with books and a cozy nook to read and relax. I love the space of this apartment, the kitchen is lovely, lots of light and comfort. Of course I like the paintings especially the seascape in the library. The nixing of vintage and modern works well and enhances the rooms. I guess my love for a NY apt. still is with me!!!!!

The mirror at the sink, in front of the window is interesting . Wonder why it was placed there ?

@skatting44, good observation, I wondered about the mirror placement too. Personally I wouldn't want to block a window at all, even if the view was less than salubrious. I wondered if the mirror was there to bounce more light around (unlikely, since it seems to be in front of the only natural light source in the room). It is a really nice mirror, and does add architectural interest.... too bad we can't just call up Robert and ask him!

@spiderw and @bmorechick , a sumptuous New York apartment is a great dream to have!

Wonderful apartment, beautifully designed with many fabulous elements along with a few I'd have been happy to see deleted. Really a respendent gathering of objects and furniture nicely arranged.

The mirror is a beautiful accent. You can see the reflection in the mirror is where one would sit to eat . Maybe, the person at the sink can check on facial expressions of those who they maybe cooking for

Way too ornate and overcrowded for me, BUT I absolutely love that round plate in the first photo that looks like it was used for an artist's palette.

It's just a little jewel box. I love it. I love those NYC apartments. You Tube has that section "Homeworthy" in which the video host visits apartment dwellers. So many beautiful ones. This one is fabulous. Oh, to have had the money and the style in my 20s when I galloped off to live on my own and ended up returning and endorsing a simpler lifestyle (lack of money, of course).

That kitchen mirror is interesting. No on can sneak up on you while you are doing the dishes 😏

Unless doing the dishes is a time for reflection, I don't get the mirror behind the sink blocking the window either. I also don't understand placements of two paintings in the kitchen - one over the cooktop where grease and other food can get on it, and one near the sink where water can get on it. Tried to find the answers online to these curiosities, but didn't see any explanations.

In the kitchen the purple glass on the table is beautiful and just the perfect touch there. Also like the blue and white plaid chairs, and in the living room the blue velvet chairs. In looking at some of his other projects, he has done other beautiful velvet furniture.

@Oznell When you described the long hallway for the artwork, it reminded me of another condo thread ("New York Condo, Flatiron District") that had a hallway with artwork (framed photo of Frank SInatra) and a beautiful Art Deco globe-shaped light fixture on the ceiling that I had commented on. So then I had to see if Robert Passal was the same designer for that, and he was. Maybe it was in the same building as this condo.

Edited to say that I removed my comment about a nice dusty rose velvet chaise because I realized it was not from this project, it was from another one of Robert Passal's projects (the project that was discussed in the thread "New York Condo, Flatiron District", although I don't think it was pictured in that thread. I saw a photo of it in a couple of other places including on his website in the porfolio section "Uptown Elegance, Downtown". Sorry for the mistake and any confusion.).

I loved the desk in the bedroom. And that was it. Soooooooo much stuff in that apartment and so formal.

And the library was so dark I found it depressing.

That's right, @QVCisFun -- good catch about Robert Passal doing both apartments! I was struck by how, even though the Flatiron one was different, a bit more "flow-y" and organic, there is a common thread to both of them....

On Homeworthy, the YouTube series, which is (for the most part) NYC apartment dwellers, 2-3 have mirrors in that location and I think it was a door there that was, at one time, used as a dumbwaiter, and it was unsightly, so it was covered over with a large mirror.

While I throughly enjoyed looking at all of the pics, it really isnt my taste for the most part, and most of the rooms seem overcrowded with too much stuff....However there are some things I did really like, like the kitchen...

So funny how tastes differ. There is nothing that I like about this apartment at all. I find it heavy, mostly dark and drab. The best thing for me that I can find is the artwork above the dining banquette. Other than that, I'd gut the entire place and start all over!!!!!

I do appreciate how others would enjoy. This is just not for me (as I've made pretty clear!!!!!)

@Oznell Love the hallway leading into what could be another era. Also like the idea of using a desk as an end table. A thought for when we downsize and want to keep some family pieces. What makes me crazy is the kitchen! The colors are great, but it's so crowded, I would want to run away screaming! My small kitchen is crowded enough, but I just couldn't cook amidst that throng.
