Mattress Recommendations

I need a new mattress. I realize that how one feels about a mattress is totally subjective. I have searched the forums to read of others' experiences and recommendations but am wanting to start a new thread, because someone may have purchased a mattress recently that he/she can recommend. I am a back or side sleeper and toss and turn a lot. I am 5'6" and weigh 130 pounds, and the mattress is just for me. I have no clue what firmness I need, as I have just started having back/hip issues at 59 having never had them before in my life. I suspect my mattress, which is old, is not helping anything, and in fact, may be causing some if not all of the issue. I do plan to go to some stores to try some out but am open to purchases made online or at Costco, too. Thanks for any advice! If you could tell the store/online website and exactly what model you bought, that would be extremely helpful.

So hard to recommend mattresses-----I finally bought a new one about 6 years ago--it is a bed in a box---made in NY City by the company Helix----it cost $750 for a full--was way more expensive then, as beds in a box were a very new thing---but I got to order it to be made for me and my concerns and it was made in the USA. Have to say, it has been and still is the most comfortable mattress I have ever had ,from the very first night. Now of course, the same bed is way more expensive due to the current conditions and not even sure you can get it custom made anymore. Buying mattresses is hard and after sleeping on a old one for so long, I can see where you would not know what is good for you. Sorry I am no help-----

I would not buy a mattress unless I could feel it/lay on it. We have a Beautyrest, bought at Macy's, which we really like. Have no problems sleeping.

I bought a Sealy memory foam 15 years ago when we built our cottage, which ended up being our permanent home. It was 1200.00 at the time, due to the high gas prices. I would call it firm, in fact DH says its too firm. But that mattress immediately cured my sciatica. We bought another cottage with a new mattress in the big bedroom and that thing is so soft we both roll to the center. So we sleep in another bedroom. We also bought another memory foam along the way from Costco, it is upstairs here so I don't use it but when I did it was just as good as the Sealy for around 450.00.

I agree with the previous poster that it's hard to recommend a mattress....everyone has different needs and body sahpe.

That said I will tell you about my experience. We just redid our bedroom & bathroom. At first I was just going to keep the old mattress & boxspring but DH convinced me that it was time for a new one.

Now this sounds a bit crazy (yes I know) but he insisted that we should avoid any metal in the bed like a boxspring because of 5g which will make the mattress like an antena and not be healthy. As I siad it sounds a bit out there but if you have any concerns about this I just wanted to mention it. Don't know how true it is.

So I decided to get a foam mattress. All of them are "memory" foam now. I ordered a platform for the mattress from Wayfar and it arrived in a few days. DH put it together.

I'm also a side & back sleeper. Since the platform is low I wanted a traditional height mattress whic s about 25". The platform comes up to 14" so I decided to get a 12" mattress. I spend hours online and googled the best ranked mattresses. I decided on a few and went to my local mattress store to see them in person.

I ended up with a Nectar 12" mattress. So far it's only been a few days but it's very comfortable.

ETA: The mattress was $800.00 not counting the platform and it came in a box.

@Ainhisg I have had good success with my Sleep Number. The fact that I can adjust the firmness is key to my success. I range from a 35 to 45 depending on my back that day. Be sure to ask for the single sleeper bladder so that the entire bed is set to your number, not just one half.

I also bought the adjustable frame to raise my head since I have acid reflux issues. The only downside is the control being internet dependent. It is Bluetooth. I did buy the bedside remote control, so that I would not have to use my phone or iPad.

Before you buy anything, go to a mattress store. Talk to the salespeople about mattresses. Lay on a bunch. You can always comparitive shop on prices, once you know what you are looking for.

OP here. I appreciate reading everyone's responses; thank you. This morning, I have been down the rabbit hole of researching mattresses and watching YouTube videos on them. UGH. I'm planning to go to some mattress stores tomorrow to check some out but sure like to hear of mattresses about which you've been happy. That at least gives me a starting point.

I'm interested too, as I've been contemplating a new one..that it might be time.

I have a 25 y.o. Stearns and Foster...and while it has held up actually very well, and still feels sturdy, firm...that's just it...I always felt I bought it a little too firm.

I was in a CT store, just last year, and tried a very comfortable mattress that seemed like a memory foam hybrid (never was sure I'd like a pure memory foam bed)...can't recall the name. Their website no longer shows them selling mattresses, but I've emailed them for the brand name. I also know that somewhere in my phone's stored pics, I took a pic of it. If and when I find out anything I'll post it here.

Meanwhile, I'm interested in others' answers. I too will only buy a mattress I can get on and try out. I have a few stores in my area I may start looking into.

We purchased a new matress for the master bedroom about 5 years ago. You're doing your homework before going to the stores to try them out, and that's a good thing. You will have an idea of the types of mattresses there are, and that's a big plus. I would recommend you consider an adjustable bed. The majority of mattresses available can be used on an adjustable frame. It's so nice to have the capability of making small or big adjustments to the height of the head and foot of the mattress. The adjustable frames aren't all that expensive and can be used with your current bed headboard and footboard.

We subsequently purchased a new mattress for our camper online from Amazon. There are thousands of mattresses to choose from and tens of thousands of reviews. I choose what I felt would suit us best - but I didn't quite hit the mark! It's not terrible, but it's not completely comfortable.

My point is that there's no substitute for actually laying on the bed to see how it feels to you. Good luck in your search!

@Ainhisg We recently cleaned out our house when we sold it. We got rid of a bunch of furniture. We did dispose of our mattress as we wanted everything new when we can move into the new house (being built) but the mattress we had was a Beauty Rest Silver Hybrid. We loved it. If I can find another one I plan on purchasing it. We both suffer back issues and we are mostly side sleepers. It never got too hot or too cold. We laid around (lol) the mattress stores trying them on like Goldilocks. That one turned out to be the perfect fit. Right now we are on a california king air mattress and although it's actually not bad, I cannot wait for a real bed again! Good luck on your search.

@Catiele I will attest to the great quality of my 25 year old one, which actually still looks and feels like new. Wears like iron.

I may not even need a new one...I just always felt, as I said, I might prefer a different feel...just a little too firm. Ok, for me...but not quite heavenly.

We've always bought and have liked our Beautyrest mattresses. Most places have a try-out period so you can see if it's going to work for you.

@Ainhisg We just purchased a new bedframe about 6 weeks ago, and decided we wanted a new matress as well since our firm mattress was 26 years old. Although still comfortable and in good shape, it was time. I knew I no longer wanted a box spring. I've had enough of those and the dust ruffles. I just wanted a mattress to sit on the bed frame that we purchased.

We bought our bed frame at Room & Board (along with a leather sofa for our living room). I had been shopping for a frame, sofa and mattress for about a year and finally struck gold. Got all 3 at R&B. They offer 6 types mattresses (coil, foam and natural latex). We were going to go with another coil mattress, which was very comfortable.... but our salesman suggested I try out one more before I make my decision.

It was a NATURAL Organic Latex and Coil Hybrid, made in Minnesota for R&B. OMG ... BINGO! As soon as I sat on it and tried it out I knew it was the one. We prefer a firm mattress, which this one is, but... it has a little bounce to it as well and although very supportive, has just a bit of give. I'm a back sleeper and my husband is a side sleeper. This is the BEST MATTRESS that I have every had. It's SO COMFORTABLE and also has just the slightest bit of give, which feels so good. I personally hate pillow topped mattrresses, and this is not that at all. I feel like I'm sleeping at the most upscale hotel when I get into bed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

My dad sold furniture for a living, and the store only carried Beautyrest, Sealy and Simmons mattresses and box springs. Those are the brands I stick to as an adult.

All mattresses in this house are firm to super firm, and I buy mattress and box springs together. I suggest choosing a name brand and try out each mattress by lying on them in the position you are in most while sleeping. Be sure to sit on the edge and test it as much for support as you test the actual sleeping area. I would be expecting to spend $600 - $800 for a full size set.

With mattress and box spring bedding, your warranty coverage will be affected if you don't buy the set together, and a problem develops with the mattress later.

Some mattresses are too hard, some are too soft.

I personally like memory foam as it seems to totally support one's body.

We bought an original Tempur-pedic when they first came out. The mattresses all come with a long warranty.

We also have a Victorian bed, and the foam makes the mattress fit perfectly inside the frame.

My husband built a wooden support under the mattress.

Yes, it was a bit costly, but worth it for great sleep.

I know nowadays they sell foam toppers everywhere.

OP here. Thank you to everyone who replied! I currently own a Sealy box springs/coil mattress. At the time, it was the most comfortable bed I tried, and it has served me well. The set was $800 "back then," so I am prepared to spend several thousands today. Not that I want to...lol...but everything has gone up, up, up, and I have to be able to sleep. Wish me luck that I choose the right one! I am going to Beautyrest Sleep Gallery, Mattress Firm, and Denver Mattress Company. There is also a Haverty's furniture store near the Denver Mattress Company so may go there, as well.

I'm not sure if you're replacing your bedframe or not, but normally that wouldn't be something they would take (if you are). Also make sure they will bring the mattress to the room where you want it to go.

Thank you, @nyc1, for your well-wishes and the advice. I have it written down to ask about removal and if they'll bring the mattress to the room. I have a beautiful (to me) bed, so it is staying. It has wooden rails on the side (like a sleigh bed), so I have to buy a box spring foundation to fit it that will hold the new mattress. Here is a photo of my bed:
