Tempur-pedic: almost sold until........

We spent about an hour with a very knowledgable sales rep.

We have used a traditional box spring/interspring pillow top mattress for ever. Our preference is medium firm- fixed position. Current mattress set is Sterns-Foster 5 yo that sags and top is packed in places.

Our impressions:

Medium Firm with cool top was comfortable. The hybrid (coils) is more supportive on the sides. It was a contender until.......

Not recommended to be used on top of traditional box spring. Best if used on platform.

Not recommended to be used with electric blanket.

Your thoughts and experiences.

I have had a memory foam mattress for about 10 years, not Tempurpedic but good quality, and I love it. It has helped so much with easing the pain in my badly arthritic joints so I can sleep. Since they soften somewhat with body heat, I can understand why electric blankets aren't recommended....they'd possibly soften too much.

I use mine on a box spring. I think a platform would be too low.

The mattress warranty is likely the only reason a platform is recommended.

The mattress is going to work fine on a box spring, but if you have a problem and try to file a claim under the warranty, you will likely encounter resistance, because the mattress was not set up and used as recommended.

Mattress warranties are often not worth the paper they're written on. You often have to send the mattress back for them to evaluate it to determine if the fault lies with them. (Hint: they almost never say it does.) I wouldn't worry about a warranty too much. What do you do for a bed in the days/weeks/months it takes them to determine if the problem is their fault or yours? And the warranties are often time-related where the reimbursement goes down each day the mattress is used.

Platforms come in all kinds of heights and can be as tall as, or even taller than a bed on a box spring and frame. There's a wide variety of platforms out there for modern mattresses, often at very good prices.

Tempurpedic were innovators in the memory foam bed category, but there's a ton of competition out there these days at much better prices. Foam is largely categorized by weight. If you find another memory foam mattress of comparable weight and thickness to a Tempurpedic, you're probably buying a very similar level of performance.

Too many rules for me---I bought, about 6 years ago, a bed in a box that can be use on anything, INCLUDING bricks at each corner if I want---Still an amazing bed for me.

We sleep on a temperpedic mattress at my brother's house. We hate it with a passion!! You stay extremely hot and I'm always cold at night. They are so heavy it's hard to put fresh sheets on it. Last mattress I would ever buy.

My first thought was your Stearns & Foster should still be under warranty. They normally carry a very good warranty.

Normal indentations or sagging of less than 1 ½″ for quilted or tufted top mattresses, or less than ¾” for flat top panel mattresses without any quilting or tufting. If it is determined that an indentation is caused by misuse, abuse or factors other than a product defect, this warranty will not cover that condition.

Yes, a certain amount of sag is considered normal wear & tear but beyond that it is a warranty issue.

I believe Stearns & Fosters carry at least a 10 year warranty, some 20.

It is my understanding that the warranties are not prorated - if purchased from a reputable dealer.

A reputable mattress retailer would honor the warranty, not play games.

We bought our first Tempur-Pedic quite a few years ago. We got a split king on adjustable bases. We recently replaced the mattresses with new Terpur-Pedic ones and moved the first ones to our lake house. We put those mattresses on a king box spring. It is working out just fine to have them on the box spring.

I love the Tempur-Pedics. I go to sleep and stay asleep; very little tossing and turning. The only thing I don't like is that they are very heavy. I am in good shape and I still find changing the bedding challenging. Just lifting the edges of the mattress to tuck in the sheets is tough because of the weight.
