LIVING ROOM

Sometimes I like to check out the set-ups of furniture stores like Ballard Designs, to see how they're putting together rooms.

In this one, the somewhat unusual combo of milk chocolate and plum, with accents of green, (and some neutrals) struck me as appealing and not "same-old".

What do you think of these colors? Do they work for you in this room?

Another, more "expected" combination they did, which I also like, is this pretty blue "West Coast" paint color with rust or terra cotta, and ivory:

I do like the colors in the second room together!

I do like plum and purple and I love dark chocolate brown but plum colors only in clothes, not furniture for some reason. I think I would get tired of it in a second. But maybe in a different room, like a hotel or ballroom or something it would look ok.

i like the first one best. i like the mix of colors, and it's not too matchy. seems more personal, emotional connection to the pieces, instead of just what goes together.

The choice of both colors especially the plum/chocolate/green is unique and pleasing. My selection of furniture/accents would be different with the exception of the stunning plush velvet sofas in both rooms.

I like the first one. Seems like a very comfortable, relaxed room - nicely done - a bit eclectic, still manages to be light and airy.

In the first picture I do like the combination of the couch and chair colors and also like the furniture styles. In the second photo I love the terra cotta color couch and the chairs are appealing. I would make changes in the decor in both rooms though. However, I do like the combination in colors and the dark blue wall in the second picture. In the seventies I had one wall painted a similar color and my sister had one wall in her place painted a chocolate brown, it worked nicely with the other walls painted off white.

I think the colors are ok in the first one, but I prefer the second one. It just looks more harmonious to me. I also like the furnishings better in the second one, although I'm not crazy about the bird painting and drapes.

I like both rooms but probably like the first better, where I like more of the individual elements. I would replace the sputnik. I've never liked them and they've become so overdone. I'd replace the coffee table and tub chairs in the second, most of the art and the wall color. It's a pretty shade of blue, but I have no desire for blue walls. I do love the burnt orange velvet sofa.

I prefer choice # 2, however it is nice to see plum beside the brown sofa rather than just cream colored furniture.

Calico Corners had some very interesting room designs. I loved picking out fabrics for window treatments and upholstery when I first built my home . I had some summer slip covers made for my sofa and loves seats .

I like the first room a lot. I don't care for the doubled up area rugs, but that's a minor change. I like the way even the non-neutral pieces feel neutral in the room.

I don't care for the second room.

I really like the colors in #1. I often use purple and green together in the home and my clothing.

I also like the 2nd room.

NO x 2 for me. I have stared intently on both pictures for an extended length of time and cannot find a single thing in either room that I can honestly say I like. I cannot even agree with @Judaline on liking the shoes!

The pictures are just so different from the plain and basic style I like.

I really enjoy seeing how others decorate their homes. However, I like neutral white walls, minimal furniture and a very streamlined environment with few accessories displayed. So these rooms, although lovely, I cannot appreciate for myself...

@kittyloo, I love your analysis of living room #1! That's exactly what struck me-- the more personal, individual nature of the color combos suggesting an emotional connection, rather than cookie-cutter. That's what I'm always looking for also in a room...

It's funny, because that picture at the Ballard's site wasn't even to illustrate color schemes. They were showing how how you could 'correct' for the mistake of having a rug that was too small, by layering it over a larger one. But it was the overall "mood" of the room that grabbed me.
