RYE, NEW YORK VICTORIAN

Laurel Bern featured this 19th century gem, after a visit to the owner, a stylist/decorator of Danish heritage. (That will become relevant later, as you'll see.)

It just struck me as so gracious but comfortable for a family.

It once had a back or side porch here, but that was gone when they got the house. Didn't they do a nice job of putting it back, in a period-appropriate manner? I like those shingles on the second floor-- can't remember if they are called "fish-scale"? The house is a pale, pale yellow, believe it or not.

My first love was their dining room. It seems so fresh, not overdone. I always like a mix of painted and dark wood furniture. And Chinese Chippendale chairs are among my very favorites. The paint color is Benjamin Moore's "Richmond Gray", but it must be a very warm gray-- looks soft beige on my monitor.

Here's where the Danish part comes in-- Laurel photographed her lovely collection of "Royal Copenhagen" china in its cupboard.

There's a long-ish, living room below with two separate seating areas. Doesn't it look to you like it was once two separate, but adjoining, parlors? You can see where that vestigial wall sticks out just behind the blue lamp. Someone probably opened up the wall and threw the two rooms together.

The owner told Laurel she loves neutrals and a quiet scheme, but the bits of blue and brass and brown that she has, sparking the off-white, gives it interest. Love her clock.

Fireplace with flanking bookcases. The entire living room is painted in Benjamin Moore's warm, very off-white designer favorite, "White Down".

I was taken with her den/ sunroom below. You can see how the chocolate brown becomes more prominent here. She has a knack for mixing clean, modern design with her antique house.

She created such a cool office for her husband! This is the seating area. This is the kind of wallpaper I can tolerate best-- subtle "tone-on-tone". It's "Ferns" by Meg Braff. Note that the rooms seem to all have their original ceiling medallions, love.

I used to prefer white kitchens, long before they became the "default" look. But overkill has slightly cooled their appeal for me. Still, they can be so pretty and esp. this one in the context of this house.

Black and white, so sharp together. "La Cornue" stove.

Looking into the small TV room off kitchen. I like those contemporary wing chairs with practical slipcovers for a family room.

They even have a barn with a guest room in it. I absolutely love the pristine aesthetic of this bedroom!

It's neat that, despite the venerable age of their dwelling, they can have a practical and appealing deck right off of it, that doesn't detract from the look of the structure.

Large, traditional old Victorians can be dark, or a bit of a conundrum to make liveable for modern families-- but I think this homeowner struck just the right note between respect for the past, and practical comfort.

I like the kitchen stove and the fish scales, but I love the Royal Copenhagen dishes.

Now this designer did a wonderful job. The dining area is very calm and relaxed and not over done. I like the sitting area except for those aqua color lamps -- they need to go. However, this design is more livable compared to other threads I have looked at.

Beautiful home.

I worked in Rye for many years. 95% of the homes are as beautiful as this. Take a ride along the streets by Oakland Beach - lovely homes and cottages.

@roeroe1005, I've heard about Rye's wonderful old houses, and have longed to stroll the streets and gawk, as we old-house-lovers do. Lucky you to have worked in such a pretty place...

@Lilysmom1, I'm sure your gardener's touch would be welcome on those sun-dappled grounds!

I love the large porch and outside areas.

I like most of the rooms and furnishings. Love the warmth, but, as usual, I'd need to add a bit more color. My favorite spaces inside are the kitchen, and the dark/light contrast in the sunroom.

My least favorite things are the fern wallpaper in the office, and the guest bedroom which looks a little sparsely decorated. I don't like the cow hide ottomans or the ceiling light in the guest room.

ITA, @roeroe1005 We have friends that lived in Rye, up until about 3 years ago. Stunning home!

We were in Rye about a month ago for a family event at local country club. It's really just beautiful!

While there are design elements here that appeal to me, overall, I like the house itself better than I like the way it's been decorated.

It's nicely done but leans too far to the neutral side to me throughout the house. I do love how each room appears to be clean and simple and not overdone with a lot of furniture and accessories.

I have always loved Victorian houses since I was a young girl. I think it stemmed from all the ghost story movies I loved and still do! My favorite part of this house are the adjoining parlors. dining room and the mantle with bookcases. Books and decor always welcome . I do like most of the interior but would add some color and other decor, art work. Also the den and bedroom are not at all appealing especially in a home like that. But then that is my taste.
