I just signed up with one yesterday. He does not work for the insurance company and says he will work to maximize the claim.

Many times, the independent adjuster will make the claim handling process with your insurer very difficult and prolonged. Yes, he or she will try to "maximize" the claim, but often times what that means is that he will try to get things that may not be covered under your policy which makes for confrontations with your co. I think people should wait and try to deal with their insurance company before putting someone in between them. Remember that the independent adjuster must be paid and therefore has to bump up your claim to include that.

What is the claim for?

Did you already deal with the insurance company and were unhappy or is this the first attempt at the claim?

Hyacinth

During Superstorm Sandy, we had to make a decision as to whether to use a public adjuster. Immediately, our friends hired an adjuster and we did not. Our experience with our insurance company was very good (I guess as good as you can get when your whole house just got wiped out), and our friends had a few bumps along the way with their adjuster. We got all of the insurance money due to us, and our friends had to pay their adjuster a commission. I guess it's your call. If you have a little insurance/business savvy, you can do it yourself.
