I ordered the 18-inch size and I'm glad I did because the scale is small. I'll probably put them up on a stack of books to get the height I want. The candle is sort of a shiny plastic-looking material that doesn't let the glow of the candle show in the body of the candle like the stand-alone Luminara candles do. Also, the way the base is made, it's hard to cushion the metal edge so that it doesn't scratch furniture...another good reason to put a book or cloth under it. The metal is definitely dark espresso, not black. The candle is not removable except by unscr*ewing it.
