UPSTATE NEW YORK KITCHEN

I can't imagine how hard it must be to recreate an "appropriate", but not a "museum-like" kitchen, in a 1790's house. But I think designer Heidi Caillier did such a nice job with this one.

I even forgive her for not carrying the cupboards and cabinets to the ceiling, a clean look I always prefer in a kitchen. In this very old space, with crazy nooks and ancient beams, she did quite well!

I like old-fashioned beadboard as a backsplach, and wish we had gone with that in our kitchen. That gorgeous slate or whatever the stone is above the stove is striking.

Such a sweet breakfast nook.

This is my favorite end of the kitchen though. That stone fireplace looks almost like it's been lifted from some ancient crofter's cottage in the Scottish highlands. So cozy to sit by.

There aren't that many house of this vintage around, and I always love to see how they adapt them to today's needs.

It's nicely done...just not my style. I do wish the vent hood was not covered to match the rest of the cabinetry.

That gold lamp above the table is the same builder grade lamp that was above my parent's dining table in their brand new house in 1969 so it is definitely not a period piece related to the age of the house.

@Oznell This kitchen is my style for sure! The lamp over the table is not. It seems out of place with the whole farmhouse theme. Love the fireplace! Jury is still out on the glass cabinet doors. Wouldn't they need constant cleaning as opposed to just a wipe for wood cabinet doors?

I would love to have a kitchen like this. Though I tend to modern, it a kitchen,this is my mode.

Love the comfy chair by the fireplace. But, if it were my house a rocker would be in that place or, dare I say, a nice, comfy lazyboy!!! (Need I explain, I'm not a designer.)

@shoptilyadropagain Curious here. What would you have chosen? For many years I owned an old home which had been a carriage barn before it was moved in the 1930's and converted into a home. One of the aspects of the kitchen I never became comfortable with was venting the stove.

That's interesting, @shoptilyadropagain -- I hadn't really considered the hood situation-- I'd also be interested what you'd choose in this context. I might agree with you. I find I like a lot of different types of metal hoods...

@ninjawife, I kind of like that she mixes just a few, more modern, or midcentury elements into period kitchens-- to me, that keeps it from being a little too museum-like. Here's another kitchen she did, with a similar pendant light situation, and I like it too. I thought the midcentury lights went well with the other midcentury items, like the dining room chairs we glimpse in the foreground. But, admittedly, not everybody likes that much eclecticism.

@Oznell @millieshops ...I'm not sure what I would have chosen instead. Probably, a range hood in metal (copper maybe). I just don't care for the look when appliances are covered with the same wood material as the kitchen cabinets. I also prefer the contrast that appliances (in this case the range hood) add to the total look of a kitchen and breaks up the monotonous wall of cabinets.

I like light and bright, especially in the kitchen, and I find this one way too dark. I'd have to have the lights on constantly. For me, this is a pass.

This looks very similar to a cute house we have stayed in several times on Lake Ontario in Upstate NY.

There are things I'd change, as there almost always will be, but overall, I enjoy the vibe of this kitchen. It's fresh looking at the same time it's warm and nostalgic. It feels like a bit of a safe haven and who doesn't need that once in a while.

I agree. It's a pretty kitchen, though a bit too dark for my taste. I also love the gold hardware.
