SALINAS, CALIFORNIA HOUSE FRESHENED FOR SPRING

After all the color lately, here's a quiet study in neutrals. I confess to enjoying both color and neutrals to the hilt! Is this not an adorable, 1930's house? "Leave It to Beaver" territory, sigh. Designer Cindy Hattersley's son and daughter-in-law are still working on it, and giving it their own, understated, modern but vintage-inflected style.

For spring, they added ferns from CVS to the entryway. Good-looking rug. That handsome, clean-lined pendant light is the Hadley, from Ballard Designs. The window-flanked door is lovely:

The antique blanket chest is mixed with a modern art print, and a tray and snake plant. This entry looks like it gets enough light for a snake plant to thrive, lucky them!

The entry, living and family room are all painted in Benjamin Moore's "Edgecomb Gray". Aside-- in real life, it isn't really gray-- it's a very 'creamy' gorgeous greige, that changes with the light. Virtually identical to another BM greige, "Baby Fawn". We had our kitchen cupboards painted in that years ago, and just love it. A quite lighter version of "Revere Pewter".

The family/TV room. I adore baskets and woven textures, esp. in the spring. Those enviable round basket trays flanking the TV are from Etsy. Drop leaf table is antique, the goose is a hand-me-down, as are the slipcovered couches, as is the pewter pitcher, stuffed with greens from the yard. Love the simplicity of the blinds.

Aren't these two doggy portraits soulful? They were done of the couple's beloved rescue pups, by an artist on Etsy. (I love that Cindy Hattersley gives all the sources for things, and resource details, paint colors, etc. She's the best!)

A seagrass tray, natural coral, and more simple greens and natural elements give more fresh hints of spring:

They found this antique Welsh dresser, and slowly sourced the vintage white ironstone which looks so sculptural and striking in it:

They consider this their library below, and it is their retreat. Looking back toward the entry. The beautiful cabinetry, wainscoting and trim is painted in Glidden's "High Salute" (described as a "complex, grayed-down blue") tweaked a bit.

Love the comfy chairs and ottoman, and especially the vintage African pillow covers from Etsy, so graphic and striking. Metal tables are a fave of mine too. Telescope is vintage.

Cindy reported that when the couple come home, tired from long hours at their business, they have late suppers at this intimate little table set-up here. Those vintage cane chairs, with that brass table, love!

The young couple's style is a version of the clean, pared-down California look, which still has many nods to the past in the antiques and vintage items. As usual, less color than I'd have, but still to me, liveable, textural and nice mix of old and new.

Thanks for the post--really enjoyed it. The rooms are serene and lovely--although they look a bit staged or like a showroom to me--maybe because my own rooms always seem to have a more, shall we say, lived in look. I wonder if those floors are real wood or laminated...very nice. And I wonder if that's a dog door under the dog portraits?

From looking at the outside, the inside doesn't fit at all. And frankly, I don't really care for any of the interior.

Different strokes I guess. And I can't really say why.

@Sooner I'm with you. I don't care for anything in this house, starting with that awful light fixture (something I am very picky about). And there is nothing "Leave It To Beaver" -ish about this house. Not at all.

@KaySD, I thought the same thing-- a doggy door for their obviously loved pooches!

You raise a great point, about staging. My guess is, they live this way-- after all, they're a real couple who've collected this stuff over time-- but any day-to-day clutter is removed before photographing for a "freshen-up" shoot like this. I sure would straighten up my own often-messy digs, get rid of stray newspapers, kitty toys etc. etc., before submitting to photography...

Cindy Hattersley is very transparent on her blog, refreshingly so. She's a designer, of course, but a laid back one. It looks to me like her son and daughter-in-law are similarly relaxed, and rather "pared-back" in their style, by my standards, anyway. Fun to see how others live.

I like some of this home; I find their accessories rather uninteresting and lacking personality. I didn't care for the area with the little table which reminded me of playing cards. With all of that white, I hope they enjoy constant washing from normal laundry.

I do enjoy every single post you do. Everyone becomes richer for new experiences.

I like the cane chairs, book shelves and Welsh dresser. Aside from that I do not get a feeling of warmth and I the rooms need color in my opinion.

This one's enigmatic for me. Pretty enough exterior but with an interior that largely doesn't somehow fit. I've never been one who feels a home needs to be decorated to fit an architectural type, but this disconnect seems a bit jarring. I love some of the interior elements, specifically the sort of more primitive looking dresser, foyer chest and drop leaf table, but overall, the aesthetic employed just doesn't fly.

Thanks, @ECBG , I never tire of the ongoing analysis and discussion of houses, whether "yea" or "nay"! It's really fun and strangely relaxing, for me to find and post a variety of interiors.

@kate2357, the dresser and the library were my favorites too.

I love almost everything about this house @Oznell ! I really love their antiques. I love how they mix the antiques with modern accessors. The only things I don't care for are the cow print rug and cow print chair coverings.

I am always very interested in the homes that you post. I could happily move into this one.

I prefer a little more cohesion to my decor and most of it doesn't appeal to me anyway. There are some pieces scattered throughout the home that I really like though (the end tables w/ the ferns in the entryway and those comfy looking chairs w/ the pillows and ottoman, for instance).

I like the exterior very much. I like some of the interior furnishings, but I'd prefer a bit more color in some items & spaces. I like the use of greenery in the foyer and as accessories in other rooms. My favorite room is the library with the bluish grey tones, but the cane chairs with animal hide cushions and the animal rug would have to go.

I love most everything in this home, I don't like the entryway light fixture at all. I noticed many of the accessories were moved from room-to-room for the photos. Is nice to see so many things purchased from Etsy and used in the home. Etsy has so many unique things. I don't like the grayed-down blue but love the many antiques used. So many younger couples eschew family heirlooms or "hand-me-downs" when they could add so much character and interest to their home. I agree the interior and exterior don't coordinate. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home.

Also love this house, could easily live in it with paintings of my cats instead!

LOVE the Welsh dresser; I have similar white ironstone dishes that I display in a simple wall shelf, and a gorgeous pine china cabinet. Some of the pitchers I have; mine are white too. Also do the green majolica, but the most I have is blue/white transferware Spode, etc.

This house marries the vintage pieces with simple easy CA living modern so well. I like the exterior too. Lovely.

Totally agree, @Duckncover -- love it when younger people have a feel for vintage, and what "soulfulness" it can bring to the home.

@Queen of shop, the six dogs are so sweet-- how lucky you are to have beagles, plural, (whether all at the same time, or serially.) I also liked the two darling doggie portraits in the TV room...

@author, your collections are wonderful and are all of things I love!
