DESIGNER ENJOYS COLOR

Todd Klein usually works in a richly traditional vein, and employs color a fair amount in his work. He seems to especially love an almost 'trademark' soft apricot, quite luscious. Here are a few different houses of his.

I was amazed to find that this genteel, lovely living room is in a New York City loft!

But it is, here is the exterior:

The soft, melon-hued walls are a nice surprise-- and I'm not even a "warm colors" person really, except for blush pink and few others. But I would find this cheery to live in.

This sweet bedroom, ditto:

And still in New York, I think, this soft green living room:

The fuschia pillows and art, and black and white upholstery, look so striking with the green, to me.

Not sure where this house is. I've noticed he likes pink couches, which I do too!

And proof of what I'm saying, another pink couch! They always look so friendly and inviting to me. This one is in a Kentucky country house:

Which is not to say he doesn't work well with neutrals and more "masculine" looks-- I'm equally fond of those of his:

The design wags are saying that "brown is back", but for me it never left-- it just depends on how you use it. I love this sophisticated look from Todd Klein as well.

But his talent really shines with color. I love to see the imaginative little collages that designers do when they're planning a room or house:

A few of his bedrooms. I'd be ecstatic to have a painting like that one on the left, in my bedroom!

Again, he does colors I'm not normally that fond of, but this lacquered sort of mustardy-gold seems to make the room glow with sunshine...

Another beautiful use of color.

It was this ethereal dining room that first caught my eye about him. More of that glowy, peachy-apricot, and gorgeous rug and curtains. I like that even though in a "stately" setting, nothing is overdone. The beautiful mantel is a picture of understatement. It doesn't hurt that those chairs look to be American Empire, my favorite period!

LOVE most of this! Todd has an amazing use of color and his rooms are so inviting without being "strict" or hard.

That couch with the royal blue pillows which brought out the blue hues in the painting! Just wow!

Count me as a fan of warm colors. I think I gravitate towards warm colors as a relief from our gray pacific northwest skies.

I like most of the rooms ... some more ornate than my lifestyle ... but all are well done and look comfortable.

Love all of these! Love the colors, the fabrics, the furniture selections, all of it! The rooms all look like they are designed for people to actually be comfortable in. Todd Klein is a wonderful designer.

@Oznell, YOU, are the best I need the blue hue painting over couch with blue pillows. Also do you have any suggestion as to apricot or green paint colors?. YOU are makink me want to make some color changes. Hubby will not be happy. Blue is my fav color. Thank YOU for always making the time to share:

@Oznell Beautiful rooms -- light, color, and all sorts of the unexpected.

I was especially pleased to see the room chosen for the Kentucky country house. I have been looking for a rug for the living room portion of my great room where I have 2 matching chairs in a very modern print. My sofa shows plain, and seeing tha5 room tells me I can go ahead and find another print for the floor without being as conservative as I thought I might need to be.

@sligo , for an appealing apricot, what about Benjamin Moore's "Pale Daffodil"?

Or, how about "Pink Sea Salt" by Behr? Here, a designer helpfully showed it on a wall:

To me they both look quite close to some of the yummy, light-filled colors Todd Klein uses.

For greens, I love the very liveable Benjamin Moore historic color, "Van Alen Green", which looks close to the shade in the second New York living room. My kitchen walls are that color, and it is so refreshing, summer and winter. It's definitely there, but is light and airy so it never closes in on you:

If you get a bunch of samples of different apricots and greens, and try them out in your house, I'm sure you'll find something to your taste. Maybe even hubby will come around!

Good for you, @millieshops . I'm the same way; I get encouraged to try things when I can see them tangibly and they seem to work well. Sounds like you have a fun project!

Overall, I like his aesthetic, though not so much his more contemporary interpretations. I also like to see a loft decorated against type, although the one featured doesn't appear to be all the 'industrial' in the first place.

What a great way of putting that, @stevieb -- "a loft decorated against type". Exactly! You've put into words what appealed to me about it.

It must be a giant, multi-leveled loft, since the photos go on, and on. And interestingly, he did "permit" some industrial type elements to remain in other parts, like the kitchen, and what looks like an upper level bedroom.

I don't think those parts of the loft are as successful though, do you?

Somehow, I think he should have stuck with the more 'ethereal' mood he had going in the living room and other bedroom, and it's more his forte. You never know though-- maybe his clients wanted at least some of it to have more gritty "authenticity" or something..

@Oznell Interesting mix. I don't find the latter pictures unappealing, even though certain of the elements (the railings for instance) are not my personal taste. The building, overall, does not speak to me of an industrial type loft, but more of a 'living space over the store' type of thing. I don't care for the kitchen, but the bedroom space has a certain appeal.

Nice to see some color in homes instead of the neutral look in rooms that still seems to be so dominant.

I like the yellow living room with piano, but I admit I'd probably choose a light or dark neutral sofa to offset the yellow walls. I also like the yellow bedroom. The dark furnishings make a nice contrast.

I like the library with the black and white printed sofa with pink pillows. I'd never select that pale green wall color with those furnishings, but it really looks nice and works! I don't like the gold mirror in that room though.
