SHONDA RHIMES' MANHATTAN APARTMENT

It's a stunning, light-filled two bedroom apartment, designed by the celebrated Michael S. Smith. TV producer Shonda Rhimes always has interesting spaces-- she's an interior design fiend too. Love that whimsical painted chest in her entry.

She adores this artist, joked that she "stalks" him. His dreamy output, which is hung throughout the house, appears surrealistic..

There are beautiful, varied and jewel-like light fixtures throughout.

Although not a wallpaper person, I find her garden-like living room so appealing. The turquoise paper gives a feeling of the sky, contrasting so well with the rich yellow curtains. She is very partial to chinoiserie of all kinds, clearly.

She said the light was part of what sold her on the Park Avenue apartment-- it seems to come in from all sides!

She has an orange tree, oh my goodness! The living room also functions as her office, where she works at this desk.

Love the green velvet chairs. More chinoiserie in the form of the cupboard and ginger jars on the left...

Her dining room functions as her library as well.

It looks dark in this shot, but it also gets lovely sun, especially where those two easy chairs face each other in front of the cozy fire.

What a cute kitchen. I always like that feature where the back of the cabinets are glass, giving a 'window' to the outside. I've only seen that done fairly rarely, but such a good idea, allowing more light to come in.

The Daily Mail published this floor plan of the apartment.

Even though it's more formal than I'd have, I can't get enough of this pretty living room, which seems so happy, and perfect for her. Love her green vases and the gorgeous pillows on her couches.

You can't get the best look at this from "still" images-- I'll link the video she did for Architectural Digest in my next post-- it's fun to hear her comments as she conducts the tour.

Practical person that I am, I appreciate that the arrangements seem to truly work for living there.

The formality seems more something to view than something to get in the way.

The light is always a huge plus.

(The floor plan reminds me just a bit of the layout of the apartment in the Frasier tv show.)

Lovely and elegant but also comfortable and inviting! I have always liked wallpaper and her choice in the living room is so pretty. I like the way the furnishings and decor compliment the pattern and color of the wallpaper. The lighting throughout the house is very appealing especially the blue chandelier look in the bedroom. The paintings are interesting and enhance the rooms. Of course love all the drapes!

The daughter's bedroom wasn't appealing. It needed a pick me up, maybe more color, it felt blah. However, in general, I do like the place and enjoyed the video.

You are spot on, @spiderw ! The daughters' room was my least favorite too, which was why I didn't post any images of it. Although I did like both the blue light fixture, and that charming arrangement of tribal masks on the wall. That was, to me, the most personality in the room, the rest of which you correctly finger as being rather ho-hum.

I love this @Oznell ! Who is the artist that she loves? I love those paintings. Maybe she mentions his name in the video. I'll watch it and also try to Google who he might be.

You may have found out by now, @NickNack , but the artist featured in the entry and living room, is Hughie Lee-Smith. His work had a story-telling, curiously dream-like quality! They also mentioned Walter Henry Williams Jr. as being another artist she favors. I could be wrong, but I think that lively, colorful painting in the dining room/library might be one of his.

@Oznell I wanted to add to my post but can't edit without changing browsers. I would like to find some of Hughie Lee-Smith's prints for sale but am unable to. Did you find any? All I can find is auctions (mostly closed, but I couldn't afford them anyway).

Lovely to look at and really appropriate for a city, especially I suspect a city in the North.

I like to live with much simpler decor as I have aged -- helps me concentrate and I seem to need all the help I can get!

@Mz iMac Yes, I saw that website. They are his original art and quite expensive. Most of it is already sold. I also found many pages of his artwork for sale. When I went to the ones that said "prints" there aren't any prints. It's all original art--at least on the many pages that I visited.
