COLORFUL FAMILY HOUSE

These wintry days make me want to look at cheerful interiors. The "Dimples and Tangles" blog supplies that abundantly. She's not a designer, but a talented do-it- yourselfer who thrifts, paints, sews, and works magic in her house.

They lightened their formerly darker wall color-- it is now Benjamin Moore's "Manchester Tan" at 25%. Those terrific painted lamps were once thrifted. Love the elegant Greek key trim on the lampshades

She finds great pillows, and combines them with those she has sewn herself.

A little glimpse of her kitchen and French-accented breakfast room. Love her curtains, and her diy botanical prints. The pink of the pillows, is a color that reappears throughout the house...

One of the things that's so good about the blog is that it's down to earth, and "real". She can't wait to install wood floors, but explains that that's not in the budget yet.

My favorite thing here is the huge vintage milk glass punch bowl on her coffee table. There's plenty of room to drop a real plant inside, which she does.

Knowing her sewing talents, I bet she made those stylish 'malachite' slipcovers on the ottomans.

Close up of the punch bowl, with its traditional grape theme. Aw, she has a sweet little Staffordshire pup. I have a single orphan Staffordshire too, but wouldn't dare have him on my coffee table-- he's tall and too "tippy"!

She's always mixing 'high' and 'low'. I think she said the cute little cane box was from Hobby Lobby. Darling faux bamboo tray.

Oh, boy, I love these lamps unreasonably! Isn't that sort of like a "tobacco leaf" pattern? Isn't there a dish pattern kind of like that? She keeps putting green and blue together, which I love.

Oh-- to show how she switches things up seasonally, here is an alternate set of pillows on her couch-- I think this is her "fall" look.

And while we're on seasonal "change-outs", here's another "fall" look. Those owls are fab! Note that even when working in neutrals, there's always a playful aspect...

Look at these darling vintage Fitz and Floyd bookends. A gift from a friend of hers, who knew they were right in Dimples and Tangles' style zone.

Nice vintage books too.

She's the second person I've heard give this tip below, and I think it's a good one. She loves orchids, and occasionally buys real ones. When the blooms are spent, the leaves still look great. So she keeps the leaves and soil, etc. and mixes in faux orchid blooms. She waters the real leaves to keep them healthy and going for a long time.

Here's another of her combo "real/faux" mixtures. Looks good! She puts moss on top, just like it's real.

I love people who develop their own unique, exuberant style, and are creative to boot.

Her color palette is just a teensy bit "brighter" than in my own comfort zone, but only a little. Where she puts fuschia, I'd have blush pink. And I'd be editing more-- I crave a bit less bric-a-brac. But the blues and greens, all the vintage, and the happy vibe, they're right up my alley.

Curious about the blog title? She said she named the blog after her kids when they were little -- her boy had dimples, and her daughter, hair tangles that required much combing! Cute.

It's certainly different and bright!

I should have taken a Dramamine before viewing the mixes of patterns and colors and giant pieces in those rooms.

Sorry, a little too informal or perhaps too lively for me. I call it cluttered and busy and overwhelming. Decorators might call it "eclectic"!

Give a thought to editing your post at the very end. I would not have included posting her childrens' pictures without her knowledge and permission. It's one thing for her to do what she wants with her own kids' images on her website, but those kids are entitled to not have their pictures distributed without their knowledge. Her house does not risk any potential harm from less privacy. The children do.

@Oznell On my goodness! What a great post. I just love her eclectic taste. I live a lot like this. I love to be surrounded with color. I also love my "stuff". My motto is, more is more. lol

I could just absolutely move into that house.

A fun and cheerful aesthetic. I'd make some changes, of course, and probably would't go quite as far with color and excess, but I find it a visuallly pleasing environment.

@Oznell The entrance is great, warm and welcoming. What I like best about is that it looks like a home and real people live there. She has carefully chosen each piece with care and while some may use the dreaded (to me) word "cluttered" it's well done. I'm digging out my Pottery Barn punch bowl, lining it with moss, dropping in a plant and introducing it to my LR coffee table.

Some other little things I spotted I may copy. It looks comfortable and she has mixed some more formal pieces with comfortable ones. One thing that surprised is matchy pieces like the lamps. Not into matchy matchy myself. I like a less formal home like this. With a few changes I could live there.

Love it all. I am definitely a fan of color and I like the mishmash. I call it mishmash instead of clutter. I like a lot of "things" of beauty around me.

@mspatmac, I bet your Pottery Barn bowl will look great. Interesting about the lamps-- to me, by using "pairs" of lamps, she's bringing a sense of control to the eclecticism.

Pairs of things, or even just a little symmetry in arranging items, always has a calming effect on interiors, for me. I used to be more into assymetry, but now I love injecting a few balanced pairs! I have oversize, twinned black and white prints over my couch, a pair of matching Valerie buffet lamps flanking a tall vase of branches on my entry table, etc. etc.

Love the "order" it brings to my mishmash, to use @KathyM23 's great word!

I agree with you in the sense that you can always go too far with matched pairs and end up with the dreaded "motel" look, ha.

@Imaoldhippie, I'm the same way-- not at all crafty. But love to see what other people do, and maybe their simplest ideas and tricks might somehow penetrate my brain...

I would edit out the drapes, some of the art work, and plates but I do like her eclectic style.

I love blue with black and white. Add greenery and it's right up my alley.

I am normally not a bright color person but I do think it works here.

This may not be totally ME but I like it!

Have to say that I do enjoy all the colors---and knowing it is staged for photos, I will forgive all the nick nacky stuff--but with kids in the house--those would be the very first thing I would do--clear out all the frou-frou stuff and put it away----too much to dust and to break.

I like color, but there are too many colors & patterns competing for attention IMO. The blue front door is too bold for me. I'd prefer a shade of red that isn't so contrasting. There's too much clutter on some of the surfaces for me. I like some of the individual pieces, and others not so much. I love the dalmatian bookends, but I hate the animal skin rugs.

Not my style, but I do appreciate the creativity. I like more of a neutral, calming decor for our main home (color at the beach house is fine). I do enjoy going to someone else's home and seeing lots of color. Here in gray for 6 months Seattle, a bit of color is great to see.

The other thing someone brought up, w/ all of the knick knacks scattered around, I would hate to be the one who has dust.

The bold colors definitely make a statement. I have more neutral tastes but can certainly appreciate the decorating in that home.
