Once So Beautiful But Sad Story

From the outside, this home almost looks like it could still be inhabited.

Built in the 1800s, this farmhouse is still filled with antique treasures and gorgeous architectural details.

So why would the previous owners leave a place like this? The answer is kind of surprising: they were forced out.

In the 1960s, the federal government initiated a project that involved seizing the land surrounding this home.

The family living in the farmhouse was given a check for the home’s value and told that they had three months to move out.

The residents were given no choice, even though some families had lived in their historical homes for over 150 years.

The most tragic part? The government project was eventually abandoned.

Today, the farmhouse stands empty and silent.

Wow, what a shame they seemed to leave so much of their things behind. Certainly has been quite some time since anyone has lived there unless it wasn't taken very good care of before. Things look pretty destroyed. Too bad, such a waste. Hopefully the government can sell it cheap and someone will fix it up.

Horrible! Whole AREAS have suffered this fate I'm afraid.

What fun it would be, and how rewarding, if a RESTORATION SPECIALIST would undertake the work and it could be used by the community.

(Not a flipper or "rehabbed" PLEASE, just for it to be what it once was in one of the historical eras through which it's survived.

It's not too late. Someone, somewhere, could bring it back-- I sure hope they do.

This house could be restored to a gorgeous home. I bet that will happen.

I don't think it appears to be Farmhouse... more of a Historic House IMO.

I hope it is bought and restored..I would love to see the AFTER!!

A home tells a story and has a history. The stately presence of this beautiful home is evident and worthy of a proper restoration. Unfortunately, the cost will be immense and an act of love not of financial rewards. Interesting to follow the fate of this beauty.

What a stately home! I would bet the lady from "Rehab Addict" could put it back to its original glory. She has saved places in much worse condition. I hope it gets restored before it is sold for parts and torn down.

Yes, this is a once magnificent home with a sad ending. It's unlikely it will ever be restored, if the government seized the land through imminent domain.

It's a nasty business, often unnecessary. I know since my mom (now passed) had part of her land taken from her. She was told -- this is what we're paying for the access (no discussion) and you don't own it anymore. Luckily it was part of the acreage that wasn't a serious loss, but still...

I found the story on the site onlyinyourstate for New York.

I was hoping for more details about the eminent domain seizure but the site only showed what you wrote. There's also a link to someone's Youtube channel called Abandoned Steve.
