EDINBURGH APARTMENT

Continuing on a British kick, for some reason!

Those who follow Nicolas Fairford, know that he moved into a slightly larger Edinburgh apartment than the one he had before. Here, while he's taking down his Christmas decorations, you can see how a few of the rooms are shaping up.

He painted the new apartment's walls, feeling that the stark white was too cold. I think this might be designer favorite "Mouse's Back" by English company Farrow and Ball?

Do you think it's too dark? What's your opinion?

Here he is rearranging his sitting room table. I enjoy the English obsession with antique ceramic boxes, birds, whippets-- and all dogs, for that matter. Here he is fiddling with his vignette-- he eventually went with taller dogs sitting on the books! He has several pairs to choose from.

Here's his stripped-down, after Christmas mantle. This is where the shorter dogs eventually landed. How lucky to have a fireplace in a small city apartment!

He says in January, he gets carried away with hoping for spring, and potted up some bulbs.

Anyway, in his video, he continues putting away Christmas decorations, shows his bulb planting, transforms his dining room, sweeps his tiny stone courtyard, and bakes a chicken recipe. I really like the way he turned his dining room back into a little library.

The video is really good. If you search: New year, new start. Taking down the Xmas decorations, and cleaning and organising for 2022 -- it should pop up.

I do think the paint color is a little depressing. He may get tired of it and want more light eventually.

We painted our dining room a similar color last year and it looks drab. Will be going with a lighter shade soon.

I'm glad it wasn't just me then-- I also find it too dark, and when he was debating it, was hoping he'd go with the lighter shade! Being in Edinburgh too, it's not like he's going to get huge amounts of sun streaming in....

But I do like his traditional, refined British sensibility. Here he is in the dining room, dismantling and getting ready to put away his lovely red and white Christmas china. I think he said it is "Toy's Delight". It made me think a little of what @ciao_bella described as her winter scheme...

He's in the process of turning it back into a library table. Since the little dining room is a pass-through room in the apartment, people will stop on their way through to look at a book that catches their fancy.

I think the living room would benefit from having the dining room's light colored walls, or something similar.

It's a little dark for me. I would prefer a kind of eggshell, especially if it is small room.

That's exactly it, @ECBG ! It "won't bounce the light". I'm not against 'interesting neutrals' at all, but this one seems to absorb the light, is too saturated.

I think @Patriot3 's suggestion of a cream would be ideal-- it's soft enough, not stark, and light enough.

Or, given the direction his taste seems to run in, he could even do a delicate pale green...

We use a wonderful creamy white which bounces the light. We have a wrap around porch plus woods.

I love the wall color!! It's a color I use quite a bit. The Pittsburgh Paints version is called Whippet.

I'm not really into ceramic tchotchkes, but they work here.

I like the paint color and it shows better in the video than in the stills. His apartment is charming. I don't personally care for all the ceramic doggies but that's clearly an individual choice that he enjoys. I like the furnishings he's chosen and his overall aesthetic quite a bit. Interesting apartment. I like the terrace but it appears at least part of the place might actually be below grade but still has nice widows emitting some natural light. It has a nice kitchen too.

@faeriemoon Thanks! I love it. It would provide a great background for my wall hangings and furniture. I get a lot of light so it shouldn't appear dark at all. Looked at Mouse's Back and it's very expensive.

The wall color is ok. A bit drab, but I wouldn't say it's too dark. I think this wall color would be better with lighter furnishings for contrast. It's not a color I would choose though.

I like the wall color. Considering I have several walls that are painted a chocolate brown I definitely don’t think it’s too dark

To me, drab is white or even worse, beige. Just awful.😂
