THROW PILLOWS AND OTHER BURNING QUESTIONS

Designer Laurel Bern pulled together her best (most useful) columns of 2021. Just google-- The 20 Best Laurel Home Blog Posts 2020 - 2021.

What interior design fan can resist her great topics, like:

My fave-- "Throw Pillows-- Everything You Need to Know", because throw pillows can be a bit tricky.

Although I like this room, these are a few too many for me, for everyday lolling around:

But they are great fabric choices for the couch and room-- I'd just have to kick off a couple.

But Laurel shows you don't have to have pillow mania-- a crucial, well-chosen few can be so enhancing:

I do agree with her that they need to be fairly substantial and well-filled. As Laurel says, "Dinky pillows are not rich", ha.

But even here she's not dogmatic. She shows smaller scaled pillows looking perfect with single, smaller chairs. Eighteen inches is fine for these:

I use throw pillows and change them up seasonally through out the year but I donated many of them recently.

I saved the ones I like the most and use them. The numerous throw pillows on beds, chairs, and sofas are just not appealing to me any more.

I guess I am over it and going for the less is more look.

I love throw pillows, they are a quick, easy and affordable means of changing up a room's entire look.

I love throw pillows. They're not only pretty, but they also support your back.

I did finally give up having even a couple on the bed, however, as it got to be too annoying to remove them every night. But in the living room, yes. And throws, too!

I HATE throw pillows, and never use them. My couch and loveseat came with multiple throw pillows that were immediately put in space bags, flattened, and put out of sight.

I like throw pillows in moderation. When there are so many pillows on a sofa or chair that there is no room for a person to sit ... to me, that is too many. We do not have rooms that are so formal they are not regularly used - except our dinning room. So when I had an over abundance of pillows on the sofas, it lead my husband and sons to throw them at each other and ask me "just where are we supposed to put these?" So I reduced the pillows. EXCEPT on beds. LOL. I still have scads of pillows on all the beds.

@stevieb I agree. I have beautiful throw pillows from Pottery Barn and Pier 1 (before they closed). I change them out with the seasons. Grandkids love them for a cozy nap.

First of all, what is it about powder blue anything that makes me weak in the knees? Getting back to the topic, I am guilty as charged when it comes to throw pillows. I love them and switch them out constantly. I recently learned a trick. Whatever size your pillow insert is,go down a size on the pillow cover. Your pillows will look luxe and lush and wonderfully smushy and it elevates the look. Who knew?!

Throw pillows work even on my little dog Kiku's "dressing bench."

It's near the front door and where I place her so it's convenient to put on her harness, collect a doggy waste bag, get my sunglasses, and so on.

@DREAMON, I keep mine edited too. And, agreeing with several posters, I've given up on extra ones on the bed. Too hard to keep "ski-ing" them off at night!

@Linda0215, agreed! I sometimes get pillow inserts that are even 2 sizes bigger than the zippered pillow covers. Like you, I think it gives a more luxurious, "designer" comfy look. Laurel warns against limp, "flabby" pillows, ha.

I accidentally got down inserts once, which simply came in some zippered pillows we got. I hadn't known ahead of time they were down feathers. Still have them, and I do prefer the look they give-- squishy and luxuriant. But although I don't like the look of stiff pillows, I keep more than one to offer that important back support.

Wow, @GingerPeach , Kiku always has the best of accessories! Love the bench and upscale pillows!

@godi, I'm so glad you are interested in her other 20 topics too. I only skimmed them quickly, but looking forward especially to her window treatments one, that is always my downfall. Although, I tend to like very minimal window treatments anyway...

This is always such a good subject, pillows! I appreciate each and every poster's input on this thread, whether yea or nay! Makes for a lively discussion.

I have 2 throw pillows on my living room sofa and that's all in that room. In the master bedroom, I have 3 pillows in shams that match my bedspread. Other than the pillows we actually sleep on, that's it. I'm not a big throw pillow fan!

I love throw pillows, and think they can really change the look of a couch, chair or bed, however I have seen some couches where there are way too many pillows and it distracts from the look as well. So I guess I love them, but in moderation!

I like a few on my sofa and bed, but not so many there's no room to sit down, or it becomes a hassle to move them. I switch out my throw pillows for the seasons. I have dark colored and faux fur pillows out now. When it gets warmer I will switch to my pillows with lighter colors and prints.

@ECBG, I'd say a lifelong interest, probably first engendered by my Dad. He was a realtor, and used to take me along as a child to some of his house showings. Got me hooked on houses and all that goes with them!
