My “dream” pantry is now just a “dream”☹️☹️☹️

Is anyone else seeing a major spike in contractor and material prices?

In August-early September I contracted for my utility room to be redone into a full walk-in style/butler pantry. I have "galley" kitchen with very limited cabinet space & pot drawers.

Of course, spouse says "you have too much kitchen stuff + how many small appliances, bakeware, etc. do you need". I'm a kitchen gadget & "addict"😉😉

We agreed I'd purchase the materials. The job was scheduled for mid- Feb, 2022. I was not buying high end products (Innovations cabinets, with pull out inserts, drawers, overhead cabinets, large cabinet for appliances, small triple open style for cleaning products & misc things, etc. (picture design below but in cream)

Went today to cabinet place -- I'm lucky I'm still "breathing" the cabinet prices have doubled and quartz top almost tripled.

No way would I invest this type of $$$ in a pantry, called the contractor to explain. He was nice but told me his price is increasing also. 🤦‍♀️

So inquired this style doing 1/2 the wall, bottom cabinets & quartz top

even more $$$

or this style which basically be just shelving -- not thrilled with this

So now to Plan B - going to Home Depot and buy nice shelving units -- cost under $300 and buy decorative containers and baskets.

Maybe when prices level out I'll "revisit" my pantry dream😉

I am so sorry that you will not be able to get your dream pantry. I have a girlfriend who has the third picture that you have posted as her pantry. She is a huge cook, and seems to be very happy with that style, she has baskets and different size containers in hers as well.

@homedecor1 ---well what a let down!! Love all those pantrys and would love to have any of them but know how dissapointed you must be. But I bet you can come up with something on your own and it might be kind of fun to figure out something and spend a fortune for it.

Building material and labor prices are outrageous. I'm having my fence repaired and I was floored by the cost of that. My area had a historic windstorm just recently and there's a lot of damage all over the place. I think there might be some price gouging going on b/c there's so much need for repairs right now.

Shucks, @homedecor1 . That's unfortunate. I'll bet you can improvise and make a better space for yourself, but it's hard to let go when you get your heart set on something.

I was able to get two sets of patio doors installed this past summer; based on some intel I had at the time, I didn't delay and I am very glad it's done. Supplies were there and the installer was very experienced.

I don't think I'd want to know what these doors might cost now. At the time they were right at the brink of "too much". Nice doors, though!

Good luck with the cabinet choices. They're very pretty.

It's really a shame so many people & businesses are jumping on the "huge" increase band wagon. I know so many variables are out of their control, but gee wiz .. there's just way too much of it.

Admittedly, we were warned "inflation nation" was coming this year into next year. Look at vehicle prices (both new & used); gas, groceries, meds, etc.

It stinks & I hope it calms down sooner rather than later.

@SilleeMee I've got some boards that need replacing. Guess I'll get out my toolbelt and commence with "do-it-herself". The problem is that the boards they sell for fencing are such ******, they're hardly worth the trouble. Scarcely better than cardboard.

This would be me, always thinking outside the box! May take me a while to source a project but I'm handy and resourceful.

Personally, I stay far, far away from HD when I can. It's like the Walmart of hardware stores. If you have a larger, locally owned hardware store you get far better service, advice and contractor referrals.

I wish all there was to repair was just replacing some (6-ft.) pickets. But I've got busted posts, split cross-beams plus a gate that got shredded from that storm, not to mention all of the pickets that got broken, too. Major damage to my fence.

My opinion is that with contractors there has always been some type of gouging as they give you an estimate of labor fees and product fees . They always provide the largest $Dollar estimate , even on products. Often contractprs buy the chespest stuff, unless you go and buy some items that you pick out and pay for ahead of time . They also charge from the minute they get in their truck , not when they arrive on the job site to work, so to me alot of leavway with contractors .

I'm just throwing this out there.....what about finding a really nice buffet that fits the space. They come in all prices. Or get one in raw wood and paint it. Above it put shelves with or without doors. Could be a really nice look.

I'm sorry, these disappointments are more than annoying. The 3rd example you showed is very functional. Sometimes setbacks work out for the best in the long run, you end up finding a better idea.

@SilleeMee Yes, you've got major problems. At least my posts are sturdy. I need a new gate but may see about getting a metal one made. A friend and I made the last one from a "gate kit". Dogs have torn it up.

I always purchase the materials for any job I do in my home -- been burned when I really contracted & signed & gave $$$ to the company who was doing my kitchen. Day the cabinets showed up they were JUNK particle board🤬🤬🤬. This company was highly recommended, touted they were licensed & insured they were NOT.

Long story short, I called sheriff & code enforcement because he would not refund my $$$ he was unable to get cabinets I wanted. Well, he refunded my $$ and I re-contracted with a reputable guy.

This was 4 years ago way before this crazy manufacturing & gouging.

I'd shop HD& Lowes is my go to place but not for any major work

they subcontract contractors.

Thank you! I have a pantry similar to the 3rd picture, it's just not walk-in.

What I really was Picture #1 as not only great storage, drawers and long cabinet to store vacumn, etc.

This villa has absolutely no storage -- I'm looking at TSV considering I just returned from Lowes & HD -- 3 months ago the shelving I wanted was $49.98/each today it's $69-79/each😠.

I'll create something in the meantime -- heck, I've planned this for 4 years whats another year😉

All pricing is crazy right now. Last year, we passed on buying a house we liked because it needed substantial renovations and already materials were scarce and expensive. We decided now is not the right time for any major renovations.

A neighbor's tree fell on my roof and gutter, floodlight in September. I contacted insurance and the gutters are larger than mine now so they have to do half of the house. They wanted $6,000.
My insurance said that would be an upgrade, find smaller. Same brand is now $15,000. I can't find smaller. Finally found another for $6,000 that's similar. Insurance wants contractor to contact them. He did and they are all still on Christmas break! And it's been raining!

I've paid for the roof and tree removal and soon will change insurance companies if they won't fix it.

So sorry. Prices are really crazy plus keep going up.

I love the first pic since I picked Shaker style.

We did our kitchen remodel with lower drawers, upper cabinets, quartz countertop, plus pantry cabinets in dining room but started in Apr.

I figured if we did not get it done we would never do it.

At least we can open a drawer or cabinet now to get what we need instead of moving this or that to find something.

I read last night we are still going to have disruptions in the supply chain in 2022. I was hoping things would turn around in 2022.
