Removing Closet Doors

I enjoy browsing Zillow when I am bored. I have noticed that many in various parts of the country are removing closet doors from their closets that have a sliding track. I can't decide if they are tired of having half the closet blocked at all times or what could be the reason.

Have any of you seen this? Or do you know why these doors are being taken down?

I removed my bifold closet doors years ago. They just made it difficult to get to my things. Now I can see everything easily plus I can access my stuff much easier.

One trend here is to build out a standard double closet with drawers and cupboard-type doors to replace the standard double sliding doors.

I did the same thing ~ and added a curtain rod with sheer curtains inside, just in case I ever want to "hide" whatever's in the closet. Currently, they are held back with old costume jewelry necklaces.

Those doors are frustrating ~ you can only see half of the closet at a time so it's worth it to me to change it up

I used a set of cloth vertical blinds which just happen to fit where the bifold doors were and it looks perfect. I just have them tied back for now but I can easily untie them and pull them shut if I wanted.

we removed all the metal bifold doors in our FL condo a few years ago. We replaced them with 84" grommet top curtains from Penney's.

Since the fabric softens noise, it is much quieter and is more attractive and useful ( you can get things out / in without banging your elbows). The curtains also end up letting more light in too !

Ok your all gonna think I'm crazy but I can not have a closet door closed I am always afraid someone is hiding in there. I'm serious. All my closets are wide open. When I was young I walked in on 4 people robbing our house. I have never gotten over it.

The purpose of doors is not just a esthetic. The doors keep dust out of closets and off of clothes. Makes a world of difference where I live. Who wants to look at a closet mess all the time? Most people don't keep them "model home" perfect.

This trend suits me!

We took off the closet doors in two bedrooms because the doors would never shut correctly. I've had curtains covering the closets for at least a decade. I kept thinking we'd evenutally have to try doors again. Now I'll just get nicer curtains.

@On It ---yes I did that ---had bi- fold doors on the laundry closet that were in the way--took them down, found a cool fabric shower curtain, a shower rod and put that up--worked so well. did that in a bedroom too--- was easy, cheap and brought a nice spash of color too.

We replaced our bifold doors with regular wooden doors. We got rid of the metal tracks and all the problems associated with them (getting stuck, falling off, etc.). Having regular doors is so much nicer and easier to use.

DH removed our bedroom closet doors and I hung up curtains in the doorway. They were sliding doors, very large and heavy, and cumbersome. They kept coming off the track, getting stuck, and I hated having to fight them every time I opened them.

The curtains are so much easier for me and much more attractive. I got this idea from watching a decorating show on HGTV many years ago.

We had a track door in our old house. It broke. No point in replacing. We did not include this feature in our new house, builder put in bifolds. Not thrilled with those either, but at least we can hide the mess. DH also thinks it saves on heat bills. Whatever.

I have a small walk in closet where I have a regular door...not on a track. I use one side of the door for hanging clothes that are either going into the closet or for styling an outfit. I really couldn't couldn't imagine having a curtain though it looks nice on some of your photos.

@On It Having closet doors eliminates a lot of dust on your clothes. I prefer to keep closet doors. You do as you please but if you leave to much of an opening between your clothes and your replacement, get ready for more dust.

@cantdrive55 The picture I posted is just an example I scraped off the Internet, but most people I know who have done this have used a finish carpenter/cabinet maker to build out their closets to their paticular specifications. Some wanted more drawer space, some wanted more hanging space. It depends on your needs.
