Iron Doors

We want to replace our double front doors with iron doors. Wondering if anyone has them and their expereience with them. Good or bad. And, tips/advice, if any. Thanks.

We call them security doors in Arizona. They are placed in front of your regular door.

Not the same as what we're looking at. These iron doors replace the existing door. They're not security doors.

never heard of an iron door...iron gate, yes...but not a door.....

What style house do you have and do you need single or double door?

I looked around, but I didn't see one anywhere I liked. None would work with my house style.

Also, I'd be afraid of rusting.

There are quite a few in our neighborhood. I think they look pretty but i think I would feel a little bit "exposed."

My house is traditional. Double doors. I live in the southeast and the wear and tear on our wooden doors is horrible. We get sun practically all day. There are a lot of different styles to choose from. They've been getting increasingly popular in my area.

There are many different styles to choose from. Many manufacturers iron doors glass insets open. There i usally iron work, scroll work that covers the glass...or none. But usually the glass is tinted.

@ScrapHappy My cousin has the iron doors on her front entrance. They are quite the statement piece. I recall she said they were installed using a crane while her house was under construction. Her doors are double doors with side lights as well. I believe they were custom built to specifications by the builder.

The only question I have revolves around privacy issues. Anyone approaching the door can see into the house unless you have some sort of privacy wall in the entrance area.

The iron doors I've seen don't have a privacy issue. The double doors I have now have the glass on the top with "scrolls" in it and glass insert on left and right side. I would imagine there are many types of iron doors that you can get glass on either side and the top of the door just like wooden doors. I've seen iron doors that have glass and tinted glass. I wish I knew how to post pictures.

I have a friend who just had custom iron double front doors installed. they are beautiful, extremely heavy and (I assume) secure. when opening the door it feels like your opening a bank vault. they were also really expensive.

but I'm thinking, those doors are very secure, but if someone really wanted to break in the house, all they'd have to do is go around to one of the windows or the back door. not that having a secure front door isn't important.....

I would think with getting sun most of the day they could get quite hot, to were you would have to watch touching the door you don't burn yourself.

@ScrapHappy I looked at iron doors online. I think they're beautiful. The privacy issue with the glass might be solved by using a frosted or textured glass in them.

All of our exterior doors are iron and the one leading to our deck and also patio have a good amount of glass in them for viewing out. My husband and I like the doors and while they may be a little heavier than wood doors, they are well worth the cost. There is really no maintenance with them albeit wiping yearly pollen off etc.

If we're talking about decorative wrought iron over glass of some sort, then I can see the appeal, though I probably wouldn't select them for myself. Solid iron doors is not a look with which I'm familiar or want to be.
