Kitchen pendant lighting

I'll be shopping for kitchen pendant lighting over the next several months.

I need it to be easy to access for cleaning, pretty, interesting, more country than city.

As for cleaning, nothing that opens from the top. I don't want grease splatters to collect inside.

No lights flush with the ceiling either since I don't want to be on a ladder changing bulbs.

Has anyone bought new kitchen pendant lights in recent years?

There just isn't much stock out there. I would suggest .starting at a lighting store vs a home improvement store,

@GingerPeach I will be buying kitchen light fixtures in a few months to replace the standard ones from the builder. I have the same preferences that you have: easy access for cleaning, not needing to climb a ladder to change the bulbs, I want pendants with the bulb facing down, attractive, some farmhouse influence ...

There are kitchen light fixtures on many, many websites. Lowes, Home Depot, Wayfair, Lamps Plus, Build dot com, Anthropologie, West Elm, Pottery Barn, ...

If you google "kitchen pendant lights" there are thousands to choose from. I think it depends on the style & colors of your kitchen and what you like.

What I was really interested in was whether anyone had chosen any for themselves in recent years.

I do a lot of internet searching all the time and will spend a lot of time comparing styles, quality, and value.

I'm guessing your own kitchen is stylish.

@GingerPeach I have blue pendants that are a bit more rounded than the picture of the one I posted sitting in a cart. One pendant is larger that will go in the cooking area, and I have 2 smaller pendant lights that will go over the island. I think different light fixture designs will have different effects and are difficult to compare.

I climb a ladder in the house I'm in now to change recessed lighting bulbs in my kitchen, and I don't want to do that anymore. I also climb to the top of the ladder to change my air filter, which is at the peak of my high ceiling. Frankly, I think whoever designs houses (architects, etc.) should be putting more thought into sensible, safe access for fixtures, filters, etc.

I dreaded replacing my lighting fixture in dining room - it has been difficult for years but last Christmas it burned one bulb! That was last straw. I visited local lighting store and they suggested going to their website to limit my search. Then I could send them pix of room and get their feedback. Did several times and finally made decision last week (do you think I will have up by Thanksgiving??) Anyway, you don't need to go in. Look at reputable dealer's website and narrow. Then you can email. They can send spec sheets and more info. Good luck. I applaud your thinking of practical features.

None of this is ever easy, is it?

But it does look like a lot of us are ahead of designers in understanding practical issues!

One thing I find comes up (and is frustrating) is that even if you might think you've got something that works, then once it's at home, you might see something at home that makes your new thing look all wrong, or at least not as "right" as you'd hoped.

But I'm hopeful and I think we all know it's a process.

I'm glad you had a good experience overall and that the store was so helpful. Fingers crossed it's up by Thanksgiving!

@GingerPeach try the Pottery Barn....not cheap,but sometimes they have good sales or look for a copy at other retailers maybe cheaper. Check out Pottery Barn lighting

we went through 1-800 lighting.com for ours. Plan on spending hours going over the pics. there are coupons/mr.rebates for a little break in price. My hubs wanted something more modern than me so i won't post any pics, because i'm not crazy about it(too modern). If you get LED lights, you might never have to change a bulb.

I have bought new lighting fixtures for just about every room of my house. Most recently a new foyer chandelier (that one I got from a local place). But most of my light fixtures have been bought from build.com. I also like Shades of Light. I also purchased 2 chandeliers directly from a maker...Livex. Love them!

I highly recommend Lamps Plus. I've bought kitchen pendants, living room and kitchen chandeliers, a floor lamp, and several table lamps and have been pleased with all of them. They have a feature called "view in your room" which was especially helpful in selecting the pendants. You take a picture of your space and you can insert a picture of the pendant you're considering. Basically, you can seee exactly what it will look like in your room.

@GingerPeach : Yes, that is my kitchen. It was finished just over a month ago and I absolutely love everything in it.
