Generac Whole Home Generator

I wanted to drop by and thank the posters who helped me in my decision making on the whole home generator. The installation was completed today and we are now ready for what hurricane season and winter brings. So nice to have that all finished. LM

@Lilysmom1 For me having one is peace of mind. I live in the PNW and in the winter nothing is worse than no power and the temps outside at 20 degrees... now I no longer worry about that. Good for you!❤️

@SeaMaiden , I know I would have difficulty operating the portable. We are giving that one to my brother who lives a bit rural. He is delighted as sometimes service is slow where he lives.

We had a portable we never used, but got too old to drag it around and fool with it.

We have only had the whole home one 5 years but have used it a number of times. Once for a couple of days.

@Lilysmom1 Good for you! I've heard good things about Generac, and I'm glad you have peace of mind. In the mid-Atlantic we don't usually lose power for more than a day, but we surely could have used one during super storm Sandy several years back.

@Irish1210 Ours was put in before we moved into our new home. They poured a pad of concrete. Had to connect it to gas line and have electrician hook it all up. Might have taken a week. Not sure of the cost because it was added into our home build. It is priceless. Needed it three times in 6 years.

I think it was about a day of installation. I have heard friends talking from the $4,000 to $10,000 range--depending on the size you need for the house and how much you need to run off it from a few appliances to the whole shooting match.

And they can install whole home surge protectors but those aren't nearly as expensive to add according to a friend of a friend.

@Irish1210 With a good company and crew that are knowledgeable, installing it only takes about day. The power company is involved to shut off the power to the house completely and then reconnect it when they are done. Also, For your generator’s manufacturer’s warranty to remain valid, having it installed and serviced by an authorized dealer is necessary.

The installation here took about two weeks. We had to run a propane line and add two tanks. We made a pad for the generator to sit on. The electrical work was all done by an electrician who did a completely new panel. No involvement of the.power company here. I am in Canada so the process may be different here.

The work itself did not take two weeks but we had the propane supplier and the electrician coming and going for that period. One of the propane tanks had a slow leak so we had to have that replaced. As to cost, it was at least twice the cost of a portable generator. HTH. LM

The process is much the same in the states.

Local codes may ask you to pour a concrete pad or gravel bed for stability for the unit to sit on.

Need to run a line from your propane tank or natural gas line to your generator and an update to your electrical main box.

It's neither easy or cheap but the peace of mind and safety are priceless.

This is such a smart thing you have done! If we had natural gas available in this area, I'd get one. For us, we'd have to install a huge propane tank, and the cost of doing so, as well as paying the yearly fees for not buying a certain minimum amount of propane, keeps me from taking the plunge.

I think it is the wisest investment to make for just about anywhere.I honestly don't know why more people don't do it.
