MINI FALL HAUL

I wasn't going to get anything to decorate for fall; but suddenly had a yen to find an autumn-hued bird, and maybe just one other item, maybe metal, for a fall display.

Had to scour all three floors of my local antique store, but, there it was, on the "$1.00 sale table"! A vintage ceramic meadowlark, in brown, yellow and cream.

When I came home, I scoured the internet, and found the identical vintage figurine on Etsy. On there they are asking $52 for it, whew! For my $1 bird.

I might surround him in a basket or wood bowl, with faux acorns maybe. On the same $1.00 table, was a vintage solid copper mug. Don't they call the barrel shaped ones "mule mugs"? I love a touch of copper at harvest time. I'll have to find some fall-ish looking greenery to stuff it with.

But, I can often not resist the second hand books in that store. Found one of those Sunset Books, this one a cook book on "International Vegetarian" cuisine. Welsh leek salad, little Russian blini pancakes, Moroccan vegetable-bean stew with couscous, Scottish raisin scones, etc. Love that stuff.

Then, for unknown reasons, picked up one of Patricia Cornwell's "Dr. Kay Scarpetta" mystery novels. Her books are increasingly puzzling as you go along, and a bit odd and obsessive-- but strangely involving. Probably b/c she does so much research. Kay Scarpetta is a "forensic pathologist" or something like that, and solves the most gristly murders... In this one, "Red Mist", it seems she's heading to a Georgia women's prison to find out more about the killing of her long-time colleague, Jack Fielding....

Anyway, my big haul of 2 fall decor items and 2 books was a grand total of $4! Thrifting or antiquing pays off!

Doesn't that make you feel good, when you find things like that? Have you unexpectedly found any good bargains lately, unexpected or not?

I personally appreciate a bargain so much more than something I pay regular price for.

Great finds. I may go tomorrow. We also have a three floor antique store. I have started my Fall decorating. Decided I need new door wreaths. I ordered one from Amazon. It will work for Fall and Winter. Enjoy your decorations.

Meadowlark is Montana's State Bird

growing on a farm we saw and listened to them everyday,the perfect grass to set your bird off would be dried Wheat or Barley. I keep a stuffed Meadowlark on my dash,my fave wild bird. Post a pic for us please

Good for you @Oznell, I was enjoying reading about your finds! I was recently in an antique shop in Maine and I found a lovely small glass pitcher with grapes and grape leaves on it. I have that as a sort of theme in my home........I paid $5 for it! Love it!

I really enjoyed the responses to this one-- we one and all appreciate the "the thrill of the hunt", as @DREAMON put it...

@spud188, love your reminiscences about growing up with meadowlarks. What a perfect state bird for Montana.

I didn't recognize what he was at first, but as soon as I unwrapped him, hubby proclaimed, "meadowlark". (He's an Illinois boy.)

As per your request, I'm posting an image of the same figurine from online (I don't have the ability to take a picture of my own bird and post. )

Hey, I just noticed, they are virtually identical, but the feet on mine are much better rendered than on this one, hmmm:

I think he's very cute. He has the characteristic "V" on his throat, is standing on a cream base, which gives him even more prominence. I agree, wheat is the perfect fall accompaniment in my copper mug....

I have loved bargain hunting at thrift shops and antique stores for a long time. I don't do as much now because I am overstocked!!!!!! LOL However, I can relate to your enthusiasm, Oznell, with your great finds! That bird is lovely and old books, I have many. You cannot beat the price and it does give a thrill knowing you have found such treasures at a bargain price.

I always enjoy when you post about your finds whether they be new or old! Hunting for treasures is an adventure which gives us such happiness! The results are always worth it even if you just look!!!!!

I couldn't agree more, @spiderw , about the fun of just "looking". Just cruising an antique shop (I get the same feeling in bookstores), puts me in such a serene state of mind. I don't need to purchase a thing to get that feeling of pleasant discovery, and sense of "all's well with the world", ha.

@Oznell - What a nice little haul! I am so bad at decorating and making things look nice, I just don't feel like I have an eye for it. Your house must be beautiful!

I've read a few of the Kay Scarpetta novels but not in any order. I actually found a list and wanted to start over in order and read the first 2 in the series. I have the 3rd one ready to go, I just haven't read in ages. I hope things will slow down and I'll be able to get back to it soon.

Hey, @rnmom , that's fun that you are working your way through the "Scarpetta" series. I had gotten away from the novels (they're chunky and represent a big reading commitment, don't they?).

Also, there's a sort of "bleakness" that hangs over some of them-- the hideous murders, and the stuff Kay Scarpetta goes through to solve them. But it's so satisfying when the breakthrough discovery comes. "Red Mist" surprised me-- she was back to a pretty suspenseful narrative, and you had that eerie feeling of not knowing where the danger was coming from.... Very well done.

As for the Scarpetta books, as I've seen so many others suggest, I initially devoured them, but somewhere along the way they began to deteriorate and ultimately, for me, became unreadable. I have a couple I bought several years ago and will ultimately set out for someone else to have, as I just lost all interest. Everything about the books: the stories and the characters became too over the top and so both believability and likability suffered.

@Oznell - Yep, the novels do represent a big reading commitment, that's why I've only gotten thru 2 of them. I actually read the Women's Murder Club series before this series, I worked my way thru all 20 or 21 of those and then decided to start at the beginning with this Kay Scarpetta series. There are a ton of them so I'll be reading for a very long while.

I Love, Love, Love decorating for all seasons and holidays, and have tons of decor items.

I found my glass lotus candle holders (in perfect condition) at a thrift store and also my retired pattern Corell settings that I added to my original set that I have, it even had the smaller bowls, luncheon plates and a serving plate. I was thrilled, especially finding great deals on them. Never know what you'll find when you go there, we really don't have antique stores close by, so unfortunately I don't go there.

What I've found with the Cornwell books, @stevieb , is I have to take them on a "case by case" basis. That sort of "obsessiveness" that characterizes the later books seems to wax and wane, ha. But with this one I thought she was largely back on track, and nobody creates a sense of doom and atmospheric "creeping unease" like she does....

Combining travel and antiquing as you do, @LIG1 , that's just the ideal-- what fun!

Just saw your post, @Donna2019 . Wow, what great things you found thrifting! Candle holders are a weakness of mine. It's so smart to thrift Corelle, since they seem to discontinue patterns more frequently than in the past. You can amass a wonderful collection by going on the hunt as you do!
