Ceiling Fan

The ceiling fan in the spare room has died. It is a HUNTER and we put a part in it a year or so after it was installed, the part has failed again and we will not fix it.

I am not sure what brand to buy when we replace, any suggestions?

Also, my husband and I are discussing the number of blades needed on the fan. Do more blades move more air? There is no air conditioning in that room.

Sorry you had this experience.

We have 5 Hunter fans that run all summer, and a good bit of the winter - never a single problem in 22 years. We have used Hunter fans in every home, without problem, all have had 5 blades.

Maybe you got a lemon? 🍋

@Drythe Hunter is usually the brand that has the styles I like. Possibly we got a lemon, the first part replacement, we had to have an electricion install the part....this time we'd have to purchase the part and get an electricion. So we will buy new.

@Mom2Dogs If you look online there is plenty of information to determine the size fan you need, how many blades, etc, for the exact dimensions of your room. Putting in a larger fan than recommended will not replace AC. It will be unbearably windy.

I've always heard bad things about Home Depot's house brand of fans. Hunter has become very expensive. I'd research specific fan reviews online.

There is a high end lighting company about an hour from our home, when we're ready to purchase, we will probably go there. The only other options are Lowes and Menards.

In the late 80s I installed a 5 blade in the bedroom and a 4 blade in the kitchen. Use them year 'round to move heated or fresh air, have no A.C.

Never had a problem or needed a repair. Neither are Hunter or other expensive brands.

I agree, you got a lemon.

FWIW, I've always loved Casablanca ceiling fans. Never had any issues in the thirty plus years I've used them in multiple homes. They definitely seem harder to find now then many years ago. I was so nuts about them that when we were selling our previous home I wanted to take the four we had there with us. Hubby said you are nuts and NO!!!

When I bought my brand new house 20 years ago, I had an electrician install 4 Hunter ceiling fans (5 blades) in each bedroom. Last year, one of the fans made a strange sound - so I had a handyman replace it with another Hunter fan - with 3 lights. Each fan has 2 speeds.

The size of the blades would depend on the size of the room u want cooled.

In my master bedroom, the ceiling is high, so I bought a post which is attached to the ceiling - so the ceiling fan hangs a little lower.

You can check out ceiling fans at costco dot com - u don't have to be a member to order on-line. Read the reviews.

I understand brand loyalty, and I do/have done it myself.

But I'm kind of in the camp anymore, that nothing is made like it was, and brand means very little for so many things now.

Even a cheapo something from 30 years ago seems to be better quality and longer lasting than a higher end name brand made today.

So many things that used to be made in USA are now made overseas, (not saying these are) and the materials used today cannot compare with those of yesteryear.

We have ceiling fans in most rooms of the house, several were here when we moved in 26 years ago, still going strong with heavy use (no air conditioning). One I bought at Goodwill used, 26 years ago, and it's still going strong.

I'd like to have some pretty new fans, but I'm keeping the old, simply because they have been so dependable.

@x Hedge I doubt it's a lemon. I'm sitting under 2 Hunters in my family room right now. from 1972. Yours are well made, from the 1980s. Everything they make in the last 10 years is garbage. And we have no choice but to accept this and our landfills are full. Grrrr

I'm wondering if there is power to the fan. The instillation may have been slightly off causing some vibration to cause a wire disconnect.

We installed a white Casablanca fan in 2005 when we redid our kitchen. We use it daily in warm weather but also a lot during the rest of the year to move the air. We have never had any issue with it, fingers crossed it will continue.

I wouldn't narrow it by brand, instead buy what you like and buy what's on sale.

Some say this brand, well, that brand for me lasted only 3 years vs someone else would tell you that brand has been in my house for the last 20 years.

Like anything, it's how much you use it. I say go for looks and do you need a light kit too? I know Home Depot has a great selection and before you buy anything, make sure you measure what you have vs what you are going to buy. You know in those big stores, everything looks so small on those ceilings and then you get it home and go, oh my goodness and back to the store.

Pardon me, but I'm not clear about your reply.

Are you saying it's garbage because it's too new but not a lemon because it's a Hunter?

Hunter is a good brand with a good reputation. OP's Hunter has failed, been repaired, and failed again, which is certainly atypical for a Hunter...but not for a lemon.
