Another idea... if there is a side panel exposed, you can buy a painted side panel or a side panel in the same wood/color as your kitchen and buy new doors for them that match the kitchen. You can see if they can order you doors that cover the existing fronts so you wouldn't need to paint anything.

Go to the Viewpoints forum and start a post to Black Bird Raven, she does this for a living and she's very knowledgeable!

On the other side of the wall from where my stove sits, is my laundry room. I have a medium tone cherry color cabinets in my kitchen. The two rather large cabinets in my laundry room are original to the house, a light color wood (not sure what it is). It's worn and ugly and I've never cared for the color of those cabinets. I was thinking about getting them painted. A cream color and sort of "country looking." My husband hates the idea of painting wood and think we should change it out to match what we have in the kitchen. Especially since the rooms are right next to each other. And just a side note....we re-did our master bath cabinets just like the kitchen. We have yet to do a hallway cabinet and second bath but not sure if I would do cherry wood in there or not. Probably the hallway, not sure of second bath. Any thoughts or opinions out there? Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi Scraphappy, Can you see the laundry cabinets from the kitchen? If you can, it might be nice if they matched. If not, I don't see anything wrong with painting them if the wood is unattractive. I'm also not a big fan of painting wood, but if it is old and not esp. nice, then I wouldn't mind, esp. if you think you will not be matching all the cabinets in the house to the kitchen anyway. If you do decide to match all the cabinets, they might look funny if they are painted to a picky buyer if you ever plan to sell.

Wood doesn't have to match anymore, I would paint them a nice cream color. I wouldn't spend the money for really nice wood unless you have it. My laundry room is right next to the kitchen and down a step but I have a door there that I never close. It's all beige back there and my kitchen cabinets are painted a pale green.

Do the cabinets have panels? If so I would paint them cream and do the panel in chalkboard paint, chalkboards are really popular right now and would be great in the laundry room for reminders to get soap, or leave funny messages

A lot would depend on how formal or informal your home is. In my very casual, eclectic home I would just paint the laundry room cabinets bit if i had a more formal looking kitchen and didn't mind spending the $$$ I would replace them to match the kitchen.

We added cabinets to the laundry area in our house which is actually just a part of the rear hallway. We did not even try to match the ones in the kitchen or the BR which is just off the laundry - we bought some at a second hand place and painted them ivory then I painted some pretty pansies on the front of the doors, and we polyurethaned over that so they will last a while. I like that they are uniquely mine.

I used a few of my old kitchen cabinets in the laundry room (off the kitchen in a separate room) and painted them a light sage green. The floor is wood just like the kitchen and the walls are a medium beige with a chair rail border. It looks really nice. I have two cabinets on the west wall above the washer and dryer and one large cabinet on the south wall with a clothes rod beneath the cabinet. I use this rod every time I launder clothes that go on a hanger as soon as they leave the dryer.

If your laundry room is small I'd suggest going with a light to medium color of paint on your cupboards and the wall.

I think if the room is adjacent to your kitchen and if you often leave the laundry room door open, it would look nice if the cabinets matched the ones in your kitchen so the rooms seem coordinated. If budget and timesaving are big considerations, though, painting the cabinets would be OK.

I'm like your husband and I hate the idea of painting natural wood. However...if the cabinets are worn to the point of replacement, there would be no harm in trying to revive there look with paint. Paint and a little elbow grease is cheaper then new cabinets. If you find you don't like the look, then replace them.

I'd say if hubby is willing to spring for new cabinets, do it before he changes his mind!!

Seriously, though, if the laundry room is easily seen from the kitchen, I'd probably opt for new cabinets if I could afford them. It would be nice to see the continuity. If they are very separate, and the cabinets in the LR can't be seen from the kitchen, painting would be fine. Heck I'd just love to have cabinets in my LR!

I have heard there is special paint for cabinets that won't scratch off or peel off easily. Don't know much about different paints, but a friend (who's husband is a painter) painted their old 1970's dark wood cabinets a shade of white, and I thought she had remodeled entirely. It was just beautiful. She said the paint was something made just for such things. Check with the paint stores.
