ONE ROOM, THREE WAYS

And while I'm in the mood for one-room wonders, here's another, by yet another celebrated designer, Mark D. Sikes. It's his own California home. This time, I'd be interested in the thoughts of others as to which of the three versions, if any, is more pleasing:

Here's another tweaking of it. Designers' work is never done:

And I could be wrong, but I think this is his most recent version, with shelves:

Sikes is more of a maximalist, but he's so good at creating mood, even when he doesn't have these appealing architectural details to work with.

So, do you have a preference? Or none of the above?

It's interesting to see a room decorated in different ways. You can really give a room quite a different look by switching things out, but...I'm not sure it's feasible for most of us to switch everything out very often. That would be very expensive. I've moved around existing objects from one room to another in my house though.

That arched window is beautiful. I like the third version of the room with the bookshelves best. I like the neutrals with the bit of blue and green. It looks comfortable, cozy, and airy.

I do not care for Room #1.............far too much furniture for the room, all jumbled together, makes the room look small and overcrowded. The black/brown armoire sticks out and not in a good way. It is the only dark piece in a very light colored room. Too jarring.

Room #2.......Again have a problem with the dark amoire but at least the bullseye mirror is a counterpoint. Not as much furniture, so it has an airy feeling. The exposed arch window has a lovely view but for me the Asian Panels (although very lovely) distracts from the window view.

Room #3 Cover........The cover has been cropped so much, it's hard to get a true perspective. I do prefer the bookcases on either side of the arched window but would prefer a single blue and white ginger jar on top instead of three jars on top of each bookcase. I prefer the lightness of the room the best of all three.

@Oznell

I really like #1 but the drapes on the beautiful window would have to come down.

#3 is also very nice but I am not a lover of numerous books displayed so I would want to remove the bookshelves and replace then with long distressed mirrors.

For me number three is the most appealing. I do love the window, the book shelves on either side are for me as I am a reader and have a lot of books. I do not care for the coffee table, too modern and not my taste. The furnishings are pretty and I like the print on the couch, it enhances the room. All in all it looks like a comfortable space, warm and inviting.

@Oznell As you might recall, I'm a Sykes fan, though I find most of his designs need editing. I believe I've posted other incarnations of this same room and just really like the bones of this space a lot. It has such nice light and windows. Hands down the third is my choice. I have never liked that over sized Asian cabinet he's insisted on using before nor the Asian prints. While I like the simple covering on the French style sofa in the second picture, the patterned fabric covering it in the third is beautiful. I'm not sold on the white ruffled sofa and chair but could live with them, and I also love the coffee tables and bookshelves in the third incarnation. I do like some of the elements in all three designs, but the gestalt of the third is best for me.

Yes, sorry @Somertime and others, that third photo is not as good visually. Unfortunately, for that version of the living room, (with the shelves), the only photo that the computer would "allow" me to post, was that book cover!

I know what you mean about that huge ebonized cabinet, @stevieb . It does dominate, and wouldn't be my first choice. I actually like the occasional Asian touch, love the more "travelled" feeling it gives a room, but that cabinet is a bit hulking, esp. amid the airiness of the rest of the room.

I like room 3, but with fewer items on, and in the shelves. (And I say that as a fanatic book lover, but I do like my shelves to breathe more.) Room One, is a bit over accessorized for my liking, so I could actually go for Room Two, with that skirted table drawing attention to that fabulous window.

I also like the "trimmed down" seating arrangement around the hearth, and the round mirror over the mantel in that one.

Edited to add-- Oh, my apologies, @stevieb , I didn't realize you've posted his room before. I try not to be redundant!
