Decorating Niches

I see a lot of "what do I do with these built in niche?" posts, and I came across this photo.

Do you like the way the niches have been decorated?

Honestly, no. I would have added some greenery (like an ivy plant in a pot with a mini trellis and it cascading down below the shelf/flat surface)...COLOR! I appreciate that there is no stark white, but the lack of color in the room, for me, leaves much to be desired.

I was focused on the 2 smaller niches.

I should have said 'more greenery'. In that room, just having that tree is pretty sparse. I'd feel like I was in a desert...LOL

I like it. My sister´s family room has the Niches but there are more shelves. The fire place is in the middle and there is space on top for a TV. She has three children and has all their trophies and awards on the shelves. Looks great and well organized.

One thing I don´t like is anything cascading anywhere. People do this with plants, but it´s not my thing. I sometimes think that there are bugs hiding in the cascading plants.

Yes, they've done a nice job. They can't do much height because the lights are so low. I've always wanted a niche I could decorate. They use a lot of arched ones in Southwest style homes.

I don't care for them. Large lights take up most of them leaving options only for small nondescript items. Also to matchy matchy for me.

I like the idea of decorating the areas . There are so many things you could put in the niches and you can change your decor if you wan especially around holidays.

I typically love niches, but I guess I am used to seeing them with arched tops on staircase landings, rather than fully rectangular shapes. I would like the niches in your picture much better if they didn't have those strange light fixtures hanging inside them, but instead had a few more shelves for books or other objets d'art. I would also like the niches to have rounded tops like the arch over the entranceway to the room has.

You know where else I love niches? On the shower wall. We flip houses and that´s what buyers love. They are wide enough and tall enought to put a few bottles of body wash and shampoo. They are also decorated with decorative tiles and really make the bathroom look beautiful.

I LOVE the niches and have them on each side of my fireplace. I also have the tone on tone ... I'm not tied in to any particular color and can add color if I want to. I like the peaceful feel of the neutral palette yet can decorate seasonally and however I want to. Right now I have cathedral window frames with lambs ear wreaths on each ...
