DOWNSIZED MASTER BEDROOM

I think it's rather fun when someone's personal fashion style is sort of "in sync" with their interior design style!

More from northern California interior designer Cindy Hattersley, who has downsized from a large house, to one that is less than half the size. It's a smaller rental property they had owned, in need of much work. I enjoy her relaxed style and her practicality, seen in this completed, serene room:

Her clever hubby, hard at work here in a before shot, even managed to create a small, adjoining bath by stealing space from a master closet and part of the kitchen pantry...

Back to the "after", and some details:

Because everything was smaller in this house, she consciously decided to stick to mostly neutrals for consistency and a feeling of more space. For paint color, she mentioned using Benjamin Moore's "White Dove" throughout. It's a famously "soft" off-white and tends not to lean either too warm or cool. She said that of all the whites she's used in her career, she finds it the most fail-safe. I feel that way about another old classic, "Cloud White".

I love the bedding, especially this linen lumbar pillow in an animal print. She says the pale Pottery Barn quilt "wears like iron" and purchased another one in chambray blue for the guest room.

That gorgeous, rustic, lacy iron bed was made in Mexico.

She has an affinity for these terrific vintage wicker travelling trunks, seen also in some of her console stylings. Such a great idea too for extra bedding, etc.

Antique cupboard is topped by antique Native American baskets from the Northeast. Vintage wing chair and another from her wonderful little oil paintings collection.

Here's what I mean about her relaxed style-- she draws attention in her blog to the cracked concrete fruit basket, obviously much-loved. She even brushes off the exposed cords-- says not enough outlets in house, so cords proliferate!

More mix of "high" and "low"-- antique table, with Pottery Barn lamp, neutral bone picture frames from Target and elsewhere. Blonde bamboo blinds are a classic and favorite of mine, producing romantic filtered light.

The flame-grained chest here she re-purposed from her old dining room. Pillows are from Etsy, shell box is vintage.

Love the soft pillows on the bench, more of those landscapes, and part of her collection of antique boxes.

Her style never looks like it's trying too hard, but there's thought and a selective sensibility behind every choice.

Even though the room has evidence of personality, and a few well-chosen collections, it doesn't feel overwhelming to me-- just welcoming, and conducive to relaxation.

I love everything, but I would have to have color, I do not like beige/neutral walls.

I'm not one to do a room in neutrals but she has done a really good job in the bedroom. I think all the textures and various tones (bed, wicker chest, bedside tables, etc.) really help break up the monotony of a normal room done in neutrals.

I'm a big fan of neutrals particularly painted walls. I like adding color with accessories.

Love this bedroom! Love the bed frame, bedding & wicker trunk! It's very relaxing and well put together.

I love the bedroom. It is reflection of her style which I also love.

The before is horrible.

Something tells me I would really like most rooms that she has made over or designed.

Very pretty and it looks so relaxing. I like the paint color, and normally that would not be my choice. Those before pictures are awful!!

@Oznell thanks so much for posting all that. I am about to embark on a remodel here and just yesterday contemplated using the same flooring as well as the same neutral paint throughout my limited space.

I'd been wondering if I was being too timid, but seeing your post told me my thought is quite likely to make me happy with my space.

I love the bed but not much else. The decoration is still much too drab. I do have the twin of that armoire. I finished it myself about 20 years ago but now that I don't need it for a TV, I'd like to get rid of it. It's in my living room.

@Oznell I really like her style! The only thing I don't like is the lampshade she chose for the Pottery Barn lamp. I've always liked that lamp.

Everytime I notice a post from you in the Home forum I'm excited to open it. I know that most likely it will be something I'm interested in.

I love her redone bedroom. I love rustic and ornate combined.

I also love her hair! I think I'll keep growing mine for a bit to see if I can still pull off the look she does so well.

Thanks for bringing her to our attention. I will look for more of her work and hope to be inspired as well as just to enjoy the visuals.

What a lovely home this is, filled with pretty decor. I love the area where the antique cupboard stands with the baskets on top, the comfortable chair and the art work is so appealing!!!!! That is my favorite in the home. I also like the window treatments. In general the home is bright and inviting.

This is a prime example of the skills of an interior designer. I do like the Pottery Barn quilt (my niece used to have that quilt on her bed), but I cannot envision myself purchasing anything showcased in this room.

Yet, put together as is, I LOVE it for it's simplicity and sense of calm.
