Painting Estimate

We're going to finish up painting in our home. The foyer, hallways, ceilings, trim, and wainscoting. It's a good size job, we have a large home. Received 3 quotes over the past couple days: $3800, $4600, and $12,000. Yes, $12,000! She then discounted that to $10,800 and then said if we agree by Sunday it would be $9,800. I can't believe the difference with the last quote.

The company who quoted $12,000 then kep changing the price, I would run from as fast as I can. What is the sq footage of your house?

We moved into a mid-century home about 2 years ago. We had every part of the house painted, including spraying the popcorn (I actually like them!) ceilings and painting every single closet, including ceilings and shelves.... $6400! And we were thrilled with how it made the house look and feel. Oh, we even had the sunroom's original outside brick walls stained and holy moly that was incredible! Really good decision as well.

Good luck, many of these contractors really have to be checked out!

They were 3 different painting companies. Our house is about 7500 square feet. We've been painting room by room and remodeling it as we go for a couple of years. We've painted all the bedrooms with their adjoining bathrooms, living room, family room and dining room. We have the kitchen to do but that will be further down the road. What's left is the foyer, hallways etc...joining those rooms together. There's a lot of crown molding, trim and waincoting. Ceiling are high, especially in foyer.

@ScrapHappy Ask about the brand of paint, the finish, and the quality level in that brand. DON't let them use some cheap paint. And you don't want a color close to what you pick out, you want the exact color. No "white" is not "white."

Ask how long, do they move furniture, what about drop cloths, sealing doorways, how many days in a row or do they plan on coming and going.

And consider how they look: clean and neat? Is their truck and equipment in good shape? How long have they been in business? Bonded and insured? Etc.

I agree with Sooner, the brand and quality of paint is important!

If you are selling, cheap is better but if you are living in the house, get a good quality paint.

I hired a painter to paint 2 rooms at my mom's house years ago, he actually dumped the Kilz over the newspaper covered table but the problem was it spilled allover the carpet. He tried to tell me the carpet was so many years old and he wasn't about to replace the entire room of carpet. He did but it took a lot of phone calls and conversation.

Things happen, you need to prepare yourself of those "things". Someone breaks something, spills something. To them it's a job, to you it's your home. Unfortunately they don't think that way.

Good luck. Are you sure you don't want to tackle this yourself? Take one room at a time then you'll know the quality of job that's done.

I hired a painter for my kitchen, I was just lazy and didn't want to deal with it, I should of, he was quite odd and I couldn't wait until he was done.

Hi SH, I don't know where you are located but price will be different everywhere. From where I live in New England, I think the first 2 quotes are reasonable. The third seems oddly high and not sure you get anything added or that price. A good paint job is expensive. It seems easy but if you do it yourself, you see it isn't...

@ScrapHappy I would definitely stay away from the lady that gave youj three quotes (make up your mind, lady). Get all the specific -- how many men work; how long does it take; brand of paint used, etc. Good luck.

Check your price on Angie's List.

Service doesn't come expensively. They work all day and have families to support.

I would purchase the paint separately as there are some unscrupulous painters who will use cheap paint. Also many painters will get a professional discount on paint but Will never pass that savings onto the customer .
