SAN FRANCISCO LIVING ROOM OF ANGLOPHILE DESIGNER

I stumbled on this while reading "Laurel Home" give advice to a homeowner who desperately wanted to minimize the effect of reddish laminate floors in her home. Laurel is genius at coming up with color schemes that compensate for, or help to blend, some other element you don't like, but can't change.

This color scheme from designer Scott Meacham Wood was an example she gave, and I agree-- the strong blues and reds and creams would make an aggressive reddish floor less of a problem.

This room is far too dark, and a bit too layered for me, but, from afar, I admire the cozy, quirky English sensibility he obviously wanted to achieve. (It's his own San Francisco apartment.)

It must be one of those historic, courtyard apartments, judging from the exterior:

Here's the room:

First, I love, and get lost in, that painting! It was from a vintage theatrical production. That, and the tansu chest make such a riveting focal point. Wood is known for using tartans, like this Ralph Lauren plaid, but as much as I like tartan plaid, I never really like it on furniture.

Love the rug, and the what looks to be a tufted, palomino-colored Chesterfield couch. Also the huge silver basin filled with flowers, and the lamp. The twinned silver faux bamboo coffee tables are from the Twenties. Also like the bold wood box on top.

He was also clever in that his prints on the wall all have extra wide, creamy or light colored mats, and the lampshade also is light, relieving some of the depth of the moody blue walls.

A lot of San Franciscans have to cope with the teeniest of kitchens, and so does he, in his little black (Ralph Lauren "Scuba Black") and white galley.

And the guy has everything down to the tiniest details. Look at his teapot, which resembles an English mailbox. Love his other china too:

A dramatic little apartment, one I wouldn't personally want to live in, but I so enjoy it when people are able to infuse a space with so much personality.

First of all the exterior work, the walk way and steps are lovely and inviting! They would lure me right in the house to see the interior!

I love the room and as you said, Oznell, the painting is an outstanding piece of art work, I love the size, the scene and everything about it. The plaid chair is beautiful and fits in the room perfectly. The rugs stunning and the decor so pretty, I love the lamp! Even the small kitchen has charm although I wouldn't have black cabinets.

All in all an exquisite home which radiates beauty and comfort for me.

Love the tile on the steps in the courtyard. Such a masculine decore. I also love that painting. Where are they going? The tufted leather sofa is gorgeous. The kitchen small but usable. Nice post @Oznell thanks for sharing.

I like the oil painting but the rest if just okay for me. The kitchen is quirky and cute. I wonder what part of SF. I lived in SF for 4-1/2 year. You sure get less space for the money.

It's most definitely not everyone's cup of tea; but it's fun that you who have posted also feel the special qualities of such an individualistic place!

That painting just entrances me-- has both the feeling of a more conventional equestrian painting, but also something more fanciful, like a glimpse into a fairy tale or a dream.....

I'd love to have something that big on my wall, or even bigger!

I love the outside but I would change the door color to dark charcoal, dark blue/teal, or even black to compliment the railings.

The second room is distracting to me with the big lamp in front of the artwork. I will never like that...love the black chest.

I like the kitchen..not for the serious cook but it is cute

The first pic gives me the creeps......way too dark and cluttered. The kitchen is cute, but I wouldn't make it look smaller with black cabinets. I couldn't live here like it is.

The outside, I really like.

Interesting courtyard style apartment. I think I've seen other rooms done by this man, as well as additional pictures of his apartment. Overall, I like his aesthetic, but would have to remove the Asian influences in these spaces, as I simply don't appreciate them. I love plaids and his use here is appealing to me.
