If You Watch HGTV ...

If you watch HGTV shows, is there one show with a design style that you prefer over the other shows' style? What about it do you like?

I loved Candice Olson's designs. Her color palette is so beautiful and soothing.

I really like Hometown because they usually work on historic properties and I like Ben and Erin and their team. They are very down to earth and really know how to stretch a buck. I also really like Erin's decorating style, it is very much like mine.

Love it or List it is an old favorite. I like the hosts but really enjoy seeing the redos and the homes for sale. I also like that it's filmed in NC.

Good Bones is another I enjoy. Again, I like the hosts and crew and enjoy seeing the before and afters.

Flip or Flop Vegas does some bold design choices, but I like that they do cosmetic changes that make a huge impact. They don't often tear out support walls, add support beams, etc. Their design choices fit what most homeowners could undertake themselves.

@Desert Lily, I find that the channel seems to have become so "homogenized" over the years, with little true variety, or spark of individuality, that I don't watch that often. I've seen most of the ones you listed, and will comment on a few:

"Windy City Rehab"-- Although, like almost all of them, I find this one at times annoying, at least it's tackling huge, interesting Chicago projects. I often don't like what she does to the exteriors, but when she salvages magnificent old fireplace mantels, tiles, stained glass, etc., that is neat and enhances the interiors.

"Home Again" (Leanne Ford) At least, within her admittedly rather minimalist style, Leanne Ford is a creative talent, with an eye for quality. As evidenced by the eclectic old California cottage she brought back to life for herself (which I think has since been sold). She's not all "stark" and without individuality, like some designers in her preferred style...

"House Hunters International" I love seeing Paris apartments, Irish cottages, Moroccan markets! Something different.

There was an Atlanta renovating couple I liked, but haven't seen them of late. I miss designers who used to populate the channel, like Candice Olson. But I like nuts-and-bolts shows also, like "Property Virgins" (horrid name) with a fun, sparky host like Egypt Sherrod. Or "Decorating Cents" with Joan Steffend. Or "Designing for the Sexes".

Loved the old show "The Unsellables" with cheeky Brit, Sofie Alsopp.

Cannot stand to watch "Good Bones", "Property Brothers", or "Love it or List It"! Personal quirk.

I watch Love/List It but I watch part one to see the house in contention and then I return to see the finished product.

I do not like the Hillary/David interplay, but I like to see what she does. I like the way she strips away the excess the family was living with and gives them light and space. This show seems to work mainly in areas of the sort I am familiar with, so I am sure that's part of the appeal for me.

I rarely watch HGTV anymore and haven't seen several of these shows. Of those I have seen, none of them really consistently impresses me with their design aesthetic, though Hillary (though I don't care for that show) and Erin probably do so more often than the others. Occasionally, one of the others comes up with a winner, but not very often and I personally tire of them always feeling the need to repurpose something best left in a dumpster or coming up with something just oh-so-quirky but usually ridiculous, which seems to be a speciality on Good Bones. I don't like the aesthetic most often employed on Windy City at all. Overall, it seems HGTV pushes an overall similar aesthetic for all their shows, which isn't necessarily mine. To me, their best programs appear to be in the past. They need to bring back Sarah Richardson. I didn't always agree with her design choices, but she usually ended up with an appealing, high quality finished product and her shows were entertaining and enjoyable.

The first renovation show I watched was Flip or Flop. I liked it very much. I have continued to watch it even through their personal troubles. The new shows are getting better, they are not carrying their drama on the show. A lot of Christina's ideas are beautiful but expensive.

My favorite however, is Home Town. Have watched them since the beginning. They seem down to earth and their renovations seem very affordable. I sincerely hope they are not headed down the same path Chip & Joanna have taken. IMO Chip & Joanna have gotten snooty with their success.

I rarely watch it anymore. No matter what the show - after a few episodes you realize it the same thing over and over. I rarely tune into HGTV on purpose - just when channel surfing.

I used to watch Flip or Flop and Love it or List it.

I don't know where Flip or Flop went - haven't seen it in months.

Stopped watchng Love It/List It - turned out to be the same script each episode. One wants to sell, one wants to rehab. There's always a hitch that comes up in the rehab and they can't do all the things they planned. Then there's the usual bickering ...

I like House Hunters International. I'll watch if it's on when I'm channel surfing.

I enjoy watching most of them but Hilary on love it or list it her pronouncation of "garage" drives me nuts! I do understand she is British but try to adapt.

@ALRATIBA Agree! I like Hillary and David on Love It or List It although it has become repetitive. Also enjoy Flip or Flop which, BTW, is on Thursday nights here in Chicago. Also like HH International when they go to an area I'm curious about. Have not watched any of the others and have no interest in doing so.

I'll watch pretty much anything on HGTV. Every show has a format that they repeat again and again. I like Home Town, not so much for their decorating ideas, but for who Ben and Erin seem to be. The closet to my taste would probably be Hilary Farr and Nate Berkus. I do enjoy both House Hunters. My latest find is Escape to the Chateau. Not my taste at all, but that husband and wife seem to be the most interesting couple on the channel. One show I will not put on is anything with Chip Gaines. Can't stand him for many reasons.

Hi @Oznell . The shows I listed renovate, redesign, and/or restore the property. Jonathan Knight's Farmhouse Rescue is very different from Hillary Farr's designs on Love It or List It. Erin & Ben Napier's design aesthetic greatly differs from Christina & Tarek's on Flip or Flop. Windy City Rescue looked to old world Chicago for restoration. Etc. So, the question I'm asking is whether posters prefer one of the design aesthetics on one show over the design aesthetics on the other shows. The design styles vary on the different shows that are listed.

I am pretty tired of Home Town--too much, overkill, starting the celebrity route of always on tv, new products, sell sell sell.

I like Love it or List it, but Hillary is one of the most obnoxious people on the planet at least on the show. So I only see it when I happen on to it. Which is rarely.

I like Unsellable Houses with the twins Leslie and Lindsay. There arent many episodes and I've already seen re-runs. I like how they modernize dated homes.

Let's see, @Desert Lily -- I'd say, as far as strictly design aesthetics of those shows listed, none of them really hit it home with me (I don't know about the two I've never seen, "Farmhouse Fixer" or "Almost Home").

My preferred style, that is an amalgam of 'worn' English country house, midcentury modern, Art Deco, layered and curated but not crowded nor "cutesy"-- is not really reflected in the current HGTV line-up. 'Grandmillenial' style to me is a too sort of froo-froo interpretation of traditional that can be too 'cliche fussy' for my taste.

I'll rather grandly give my aesthetic the shorthand moniker of "mod cottage", lacking any better description....

A newer one I've enjoyed watching is "No Demo Reno" (Jenn Todryk) the designer.

I like "Home Again"..Leanne Ford.

And I still enjoy watching "Love it or List it" with Hilary and David.

Almost forgot "Nate and Jeremiah" ~ Save my House.. some of the work the show is beautiful !

I wish the producers of the reno/real estate shows would become more creative. As some have mentioned the repetitive scripting has become tiresome. We fast forward through the banter to see the showings and final decisions.

I am enjoying No Demo Reno with Jennifer Todryk. FInd it refreshing that there is very little "demo", the budgets are more realistic, and she sometimes sells items from the home to make a little money towards the project. (cabinet doors, etc).

I also like Good Bones. Another show with ideas that I can possibly fit into my budget, and are not so same as last week in feel.

@Bri369 ... I LOVE Candace Olsen !! I think she is my FAVORITE designer and I miss her on HGTV ... I bought a few of her books and she just nails my decorating taste every time !! I have never been a fan of loud screaming color on the walls and her soothing colors speak volumes to me ... if I want color I will add it myself over time ...
